The Mediterranean's biggest island is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. A mountainous spot, Sicily's coast and its small islands sit at the foot of volcanoes, including Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano. The Greeks, Romans, Normans and Catalans all left their mark on the island in the form of Byzantine palaces, Gothic castles and Baroque flourishes in capital Palermo. Most larger towns offer interesting museums, but Etna and the Hellenic temples in Agrigento offer particularly unique sights.

Staré Mesto, the Old Town of Slovakia's capital, whisks visitors back a few centuries as they wander through cobbled streets, admire the Baroque architecture, enjoy summer and Christmas concerts at Old Town Hall and while away time at cafés and restaurants. Venture beyond for more sites, including the 15th-century hrad (castle) with its treasury and museums of history and music, the Slovak National Theatre and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Slovak National Gallery, housed in an 18th-century palace.

Baddeck, on Cape Breton Island, is a great base for the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Louisbourg’s fortress. Easily explored on foot, Baddeck’s sole street offers an appealing array of accommodation, restaurants and stores and lovely views of Bras d’Or Lake. Take a kayak tour on the North River, visit Kidston Lighthouse or hike the national park’s trails, cliffs and coves. Back in the town, don’t miss the museum devoted to famed inventor Alexander Graham Bell.

It took George H.W. Bush to make Kennebunkport known to most of the country, but New Englanders have enjoyed this quiet coastal Maine town for years. In hot weather, beaches are a major draw, but Kennebunkport's many small boutiques, art galleries and restaurants make a visit fun at any time of year. Inveterate shoppers may want to combine a visit to Kennebunkport with a trip to nearby Kittery, where dozens of outlets and factory stores offer plenty of bargains.
