Know before you go
Esperance is a town nestled among national parks, nature preserves, and wild coastlines. While it may be tiny, there's so much to see and do here. First, if you're hoping to get to the area's most remote attractions, make sure you're driving a 4x4 vehicle capable of handling rugged roads. As far as where to stay, the Esplanade area right on Esperance Bay will give you the nearest access to restaurants, shops, and waterfront views. Lodging in this area ranges from motels to chain hotels to luxurious private residences. On the edges of town, you'll find a variety of retreats, caravan parks, and boutique chalets. The distance means you'll have fewer shop and restaurants, but the natural beauty is still bountiful.

Summer is the busiest time of year in Esperance, so you’ll want to book your lodging early, along with any tours you hope to do—particularly tours that have limited space like boat and plane excursions.

In December, right on the water, enjoy the live music, tasty local foods, arts and crafts, and a day of ripping it at the on-premises skate park at Edge of the Bay Festival.

The inlet at Stokes National Park is positively swimming (pun intended) with black bream, Australian salmon, King George whiting and mullet. Be sure to check fishery regulations before casting a line.

It’s summer, so of course you should seek out the beach. One particularly unique experience? Roll out your beach towel alongside the local kangaroos at Lucky Bay, who also like to sun themselves by the water.

Summer’s reliable weather makes it the best time to visit the bubblegum-pink Lake Hillier, a super-salty inland body of water on Middle Island of the Recherche Archipelago. Esperance is the closest town but is still 77 miles away. While you can reach the island by boat, a flight to the island will give you the best glimpse of its color.

Fall isn’t quite as popular as summer, but you still won’t be lonely in town. Make sure you bring both your hiking boots and your fishing pole, because less-than-steamy temperatures and migrating fish make it an ideal time for both activities. Even better: combine the two.

Say farewell to the racing season at Esperance’s biggest social event of the year—Freight Lines Group Esperance Cup Day, on the long weekend in March.

Hike one of the area’s most recognizable peaks, Mount Ridley, with the benefit of cooler weather but before winter rain makes the drive up too muddy.

From March to April, salmon are so plentiful you can literally spot them from the road. And if you’ve got a pole with you, you can fish from the beach. The aptly-named Salmon Beach and Observatory Beach are two good spots, especially at dawn or dusk.

Although it doesn’t get particularly frigid in Esperance, the combination of cooler temperatures and breezy days can make beach activities less appealing. Instead, use the opportunity to see some of the area’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-them flora and fauna.

Frolic through orchids at Cape Le Grand National Park. July through October, expect to see large-leafed sun orchids, blue china orchids, and wallflower orchids. And also look for the pretty white and red blooms of kodget shrubs, which pop up around the same time.

Winter is the time to head to the Fitzgerald Coast within the Fitzgerald River National Park for a chance to see southern right whales—and their newborn calves—right off the shore. But the road here is rough, so you’ll either need a four-wheel drive or reach the area on foot.

Even if temperatures are a bit chilly for sunbathing, you can still appreciate the pristine beaches, rocky headlands, teeny bays, and dizzying cliffs along the 40-kilometer Great Ocean Drive, a loop that winds around both inland areas like Pink Lake and the coast.

You can definitely spend time at the beach in the springtime (and you should, because the weather is practically perfect in every way)—but don’t miss out on some of the seasonal events that give you a real taste for the local community.

Place your bets at the Esperance Bay Turf Club during their first race day of the season in November.

Soak up warming weather at the Museum Village Markets every second Sunday. Vendors serve up coffee, treats, antiques and more as buskers entertain visitors.

Learn about the local environment and cultures—and see more than 500 native wildflowers on display—at the Esperance Wildflower Festival in September.

  • Bandy Creek
This picturesque fishing, boating, and paddleboarding spot is the perfect area if you’re hoping to spend most of your time on the water. Stay in a boutique chalet or retreat-style lodgings nearby, but you’ll need to travel into town for shopping and eateries (beyond the fish you catch, of course.)

Despite its name, Pink Lake isn’t actually pink anymore, but it’s still gorgeous and right along the must-do Great Ocean Drive. A few retreats, private residences, and caravan parks can be booked along this somewhat-remote stretch, and it’s right next to the Pink Lake Golf Course. But you’ll need to plan ahead for meals or drive the 10 minutes into town.
