Know before you go
The Hunter Valley is a region with many towns around it. Pokolbin is the most popular--home to major wineries, tourist attractions, and top golf courses. It gets large crowds in the summer, especially day trippers from Sydney and Newcastle. If you're after a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Lovedale is a lovely, smaller town dotted with cozy retreats and boutique wineries and cellar doors (and it's right next door to Pokolbin). The heritage town of Wollombi has a relaxed vibe and is generally more budget-friendly. And although it's small by big-city standards, Maitland is one of the largest towns in the region and can still be easily explored on foot. Its High Street is lined with historic mansions, galleries, and craft shops.

Where to stay

  • Pokolbin
Pokolbin is home to some of the oldest wineries dating back to the 1800s. You can find a range of stays here, from boutique hotels and luxury retreats to cosy vineyard cottages—all within steps of top-notch restaurants, cafes, cellar doors and concert venues. The Hunter Valley Gardens and zoo are also in the area—great for an easy day out with the children.

Nineteenth-century sandstone buildings line the town’s well-preserved streets, reflecting Wollombi’s colonial heritage. Its lively markets, an old-school country tavern and a museum housed in a former courthouse add to the charm. Planning a romantic escape? You can find a range of couples-only retreats here.

This small town is so scenic and peaceful that wild kangaroos and wallabies roam freely, so get your camera ready. Whether you’re staying in a Tuscan-style villa, a chic boutique retreat or family cottage, you’ll find plenty to do here. We always recommend checking out the top-end restaurants and art galleries—or for more action, go horseback riding and hot-air ballooning.
