Fewer people means more opportunities to get up close and personal with local wildlife in nearby sanctuaries like the Goss Moor Nature Reserve.

On a chilly or rainy day, take shelter in the Blue Reef Aquarium, where you’ll get all the underwater action without any exposure to icy waves.

Locals and tourists alike begin to peek their heads out in Newquay as daffodils pop and leaves begin to bud. But fear not—it’s too early for the crowds just yet, so soak up a quiet walk on the beach while you still can.

Springtime is all about getting your flower fix. Hike a section of the South West Coastal Path while it’s blanketed by pink sea thrift blooms, which peak in April and May.

Book a surf session in spring before the summer crowds take over the beach. All you need is a wetsuit to deal with any chill in the water.

As the days get longer and sunnier, grab seaside patio tables at Fistral Beach’s restaurants. It’s worth planning dinner around sunset for a truly spectacular sight.

Obviously there’s a reason Newquay is known as a summer destination, and that’s because the beaches are spectacular on those warm, sunny afternoons. Think: sandcastles, gentle waves, and a long horizon of turquoise waters. This is “high season,” so you’ll need to get into planning mode early to secure your hotel booking—especially if your trip falls along one of the town’s popular festival dates.

Head to Fistral Beach to spot surfers or catch a wave yourself. If you fancy a drink by the water, Perranporth Beach has the only bar-side beach (which also serves up burgers and snacks.) Craving quiet? Great Western Beach requires a walk down a steep, winding trail, but the reward is an uncrowded stretch of sand, sea caves, and rock pools.

In July, the Newquay Carnival packs in golf tournaments, live music, classic car shows, and family-friendly booths and activities. On the final day, a homespun parade takes over main street with locals dressed in homemade themed outfits like moustached sea creatures or yellow animated children’s characters (think SpongeBob, Pacman, and minions).

In August, the five-day Boardmasters Festival brings the crowds and the good vibes. During daylight hours, athletes compete in surfing and skateboarding championships. Once the sun sets, DJs take over to keep the energy sky-high.
