Know before you go
Surf's up in Canada? You heard that right. At Tofino, a small district on Vancouver Island, you can surf--wetsuit very much required--or just walk on long sandy beaches and explore tide pools. The best spot for lodging depends on what matters most to you. For travelers who like having their pick of coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping, a stay at a resort or inn near the Tofino Marina will give a good range of local spots. Beach lovers who want to stay close to the sand and don't mind traveling for meals will be happier at a cottage on Lynn Road near Chesterman Beach, or at one of the resorts farther down the Pacific Rim Highway near Cox Bay. On a budget? The town of Ucluelet (just over a half-hour drive from Tofino Marina) can have cheaper deals even in the busy season, but it still has plenty of its own restaurants and shops.
