Summers along the Sunshine Coast bring heat and humidity, although the occasional cool breeze brings some relief. Beaches are packed this time of year, and locals and tourists alike head for the warm waters at Sunshine Beach.
A day of island hopping should definitely be on your itinerary. Head out to Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, where you can traverse the dunes, drive along the deserted beaches, and explore the wreck of the Maheno, a steamer that ran aground in 1935.
For a dose of serenity, spend an afternoon kayaking through waterways and wetlands of the Noosa Everglades. Try spotting some of Great Sandy National Park’s feathered residents, such as the rare black-necked stork.
Get acquainted with the country’s weird and wonderful creatures with a trip to the Australia Zoo. There are plenty of ways to meet the region's wildlife, from feeding kangaroos to walking with wombats.
Say hello to cool, crisp autumn days. Throw on a light jacket and head out into the hinterland to see maple trees paint the rolling hills with shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Head out to Kondalilla National Park to spend a day picnicking by Kondalilla Falls, which is especially spectacular after a rain. Cool off on warm afternoons with a dip in the nearby rock pools.
Lace up your hiking boots and tackle the two-hour climb to the summit of Mount Coolum, where you can enjoy views of Coolum Beach and Coolum National Park.
Looking for a challenge? The craggy peaks of Glass House Mountains National Park soar above dense pine forests. Experienced bushwalkers can test their skill on the recently opened Yul-Yan-Man Track, a rugged path winding through the eucalyptus trees.
Living up to its name, Queensland’s Sunshine Coast sees more than its fair share of cloud-free days throughout the winter months. Take advantage of off-peak prices and book a stay at a beachfront resort, or head west towards the mountains for a more traditional winter experience in a cozy cabin with a wood-burning fireplace.
Take a short drive to Tewantin National Park, which gazes down on the Noosa Coast from the summit of Mount Tinbeerwah. Swamp wallabies and wallum froglets — both as cute as they sound — are among the creatures in the coastal rainforest and stands of eucalyptus trees.
Majestic humpback whales on their yearly migration can be spotted from shore at Dolphin Point or Point Cartwright. You can get ever closer to these gentle giants on a whale-watching tour.
Rug up — the local term for “dress warmly” — for the Gympie Music Muster, a four-day festival held every August. Camp beside the creek in Amamoor State Forest and enjoy a mix of country, roots, blues, folk, and rock.
Fewer tourists and mild, sunny days make spring an excellent time to visit the Sunshine Coast. While the ocean might be too chilly for swimming, you’ll be able to soak up some sun along the shore.
Kids will want to get acquainted with the baby calves in the paddocks around Maleny, a rural retreat where the landscape is dotted with dairy cows. The town itself is great to explore, filled with organic cafes and boutiques selling eclectic clothing.
On rainy days, take a day trip to Caloundra’s Queensland Air Museum, the country’s largest aviation museum. History buffs will be blown away by the scores of jets and propeller planes on display, including relics salvaged from the post-war years.
For hair-raising thrills, check out Aussie World, the area’s only fully-fledged theme park. Roller coasters like the Redback and The Plunge will have you holding on for dear life.
