Booking beds over the phone was no problem. We were greeted by the friendly manager/owner on arrival who took the time to show us around and help us plan a personalised tour of the region, complete with local knowledge that made it excellent. The hostel was a bit tired, but they're working hard on upgrades and it was all very...

We loved this place it was in such a beautiful spot. We had a nice size room with a lovely view of the beach. It was very homely and clean and the showers were piping hot and had good pressure. There is a nice walk just behind the lodge and Jack the owner is very knowledgeable about where to see...

We stayed at Surat Bay lodge for 2 nights and absolutely enjoyed our time here. We got room number 1, which you should go after if you can. It has two window-fronts and you get to see the bay all around. It's incredible! Also, the new owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The location is excellent as it is in...

We arrived last afternoon and were shown to the family room. My husband and I and our older son were driving the Catlins. Ester was welcoming and told us what we could see and do. We weren't able to walk around to Cannibal Bay for two reasons; the tide was coming in and there was a sea lion lying on...

This is a hostel/backpacker place at Surat Bay, pretty much far away from civilization and that makes the location great. Where else you can see from your room window sea lions coming ashore within couple of dozen meters from you. The bay and beach provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and other outdoor activities. Please note that there is no...

We came to Surat Bay Lodge for one night and wished we could have stayed more. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the kitchen extremely equipped and showers clean with hot water, but more importantly - Jack and Ester, the the owners are so warm and welcoming! They were so nice, helping us with the sights in the area, bribing...

My stay here was brilliant. I was met with a handshake from Jack and immediately felt welcome with a quick tour of the place. Was even given a loan of binoculars and advised on the best time and place to see the Yellow-eyed Penguins before being left to settle in. The lounge and kitchen are great spaces to relax in...

Our stay in this wonderful little gem was relaxed and comfortable and very inviting during an immense storm with strong winds and sideways rain. Kiwi Jack welcomed us and straight away made us feel welcome with a firm handshake and friendly greeting. A quick tour of the place before showing us to our room. The binoculars were a nice touch...

Jack and Ester go above and beyond their obligations to make sure all guests are taken care of and have a memorable vacation in the Catlins. Also, these two beaches are the only ones in the Catlins that have tons of sea lions and this is the only accommodation that's directly on them, so even if you're feeling too lazy...
