My wife and I stayed at the Bastide in July. Our time there was lovely and because of the good care of the owners we felt completely at ease. Marie-Claire and Jan are very welcoming, friendly hosts who will do everything in their power to accommodate you during your stay. When we arrived we we're immediately invited for a welcome drink. On certain nights they offered a delicious dinner menu (cooked by Jan himself), which we highly recommend! We can only hope that the new owners of the hotel have their same finesse and hospitality, because it takes a lot to do a better job than them.

I just finished my second stay at the Bastide. The new owners are doing a great job keeping up the property. The garden, pool and hot tub are truly gorgeous and the rooms are lovely as well! In my opinion, Boulbon makes a great base for exploring Provence- Arles, Sant Remy, Avignon and Les Baux are 30 min or less away and lots of others are within an hour, like Gordes! This hotel is a place to slow down and savour the relaxed Provence experience which we absolutely love. Popping out to cute nearby towns to amble through the streets and cafes, and coming back to the hotel to laze in the pool are the order of the day. The hotel dinner was also quite good! And there are a few options in Boulbon to try (we ate at a small food truck festival there Sunday evening when many things were closed). It’s a great place to feel more exposed to locals while still a gorgeous villiage and area! I think the hotel is a fabulous value for the money, in my opinion the outdoor area is truly 5 stars!

Staying here was the highlight of our honeymoon through France. It is a beautiful property in a very charming town. We were so relaxed here! The staff were extremely welcoming and everything was very clean. The room we stayed in was updated and very comfortable. The breakfast was so delicious as were the house cocktails. We were sad to have not tried the dinner but it smelled delicious! There is not too much to do in Boulbon itself, but it is very nice to walk around with virtually no one else around (which is a good thing in my opinion) It feels more of an authentic quiet town in Provence than the others you may visit. It is a great base to travel around the region with most major sites within a 30 minutes drive. I hope one day we can return!

We spent two nights at La Bastide de Boulbon and enjoyed our stay very much. The room, the service and the meals where excellent. It is a charming place in an old villa with a wonderful garden and a pool. Since Boulon is very small and has only a couple of restaurants, dinner at the hotel is a good option. We had a very nice dinner with good wines at reasonable prices.

We loved our stay here! The rooms were beautiful and comfortable and had great views of the property grounds. The property itself had gorgeous and well tended gardens with several spots to sit under the trees or around the pool area. Breakfast was great and the staff very friendly and helpful. The town was very charming and very well located to several places in that area that we visited. Would highly recommend!

An excellent restaurant and hotel. Especially the location is incredible. I highly recommend it, and check out the restaurant the food is amazing and the chef is a real nice person. The village is very nice, and there is a huge castle at the top of the village mountain.

Unfortunately, I cannot share the enthusiasm of previous reviews, as we, a family of five, were quite irritated by the owner's attitude towards children. When our ten-year-old son was in the swimming-pool, the owner, behaving like an overzealous swimming-instructor, told him (he never informed us) to get out off the water with his rubber-ring, which he'd allowed an adult guest to use the previous day,Then he forbade him to drop his plastic toys in the pool which the boy was diving after. When my wife asked him about these constant rebukes, he insinuated that our children were boisterous and badly educated ("Ils n'écoutent pas!).
What ultimately annoyed us most, was that he'd made us, a family with three children, an offer to stay at his hotel. Did he expect our children to swim two rounds and then read a book on a deckchair for the rest of the day?

Response from jiediem, Propriétaire at La Bastide de Boulbon

Since I have three children myself, I can assure I have nothing against children ! And children are most welcome in our hotel. Although, you have to keep in mind, la Bastide is a small and peaceful country house hotel (hôtel de charme). I think that’s something you didn’t think of when you booked your stay. How else can I explain your astonishment after my reaction when your three children were playing in our rather small (4mx11m) swimming pool, with a 2 meter long inflatable shark, water-pistols and rubber tubes. So indeed I took action against that, to assure the calmness which most of our guests come for. I regret we did not understand each other. All the best

What makes this property so special--and a MUST STAY--are the warmth of the owners, Marie-Claire and Jan, coupled with a stunning property. On this trip, my husband and I stayed at two Relais & Chateaux properties--La Bastide du Moustiers in Moustiers st. Marie and then at Oustau de Baumaniere in Les Baux. While both were lovely, we would choose La Bastide to stay at again. The property is absolutely lovely and peaceful-there is a gorgeous outdoor patio and chairs to sit out and have a meal, a drink or just relax. The location is excellent--Avignon, Arles, Les Baux, St. Remy are all within 30 minutes or so drive. The attention to detail at the property shows how much pride Jan and Marie-Claire take--but more importantly, they are hands down the best hosts we've ever encountered on our travels around the world. For example, when we arrived, Jan sat down with us and gave us his maps and recommendations for routes to take to see the best scenery, good restaurants etc. When I got sick, Marie-Claire called the town dr and got me an appointment immediately to see him. We ate dinner there 2 of the nights (one of them Jan cooked) and the meals were excellent--in fact the chef they had brought in one night cooked the best meal my husband and I had in Provence (including our Michelin star meal in Moustiers). Our only minor complaint is that we wish the shower head could be attached on the wall so that you could take a shower without having to hold the shower head. That said, we were so appreciative of Marie-Claire and Jan's efforts to make us feel as if we were old friends and guests in their gorgeous home, that we cannot say enough great things about them and this lovely gem. We hope to return soon! If you do go, one of the most lovely towns that Jan told us to have lunch in is Uzes--highly recommend going there--absolutely charming, excellent food!

We had a lovely five nights at La Bastide de Boulbon but I have to say it's not what I expected from the previous reviews.

The Bastide itself is a beautiful building set in exquisite gardens in the picturesque village of Boulbon which is located well for everywhere in inner Provence.

The rooms are small - lets not pretend otherwise and whilst I had studied this place to death I was still disappointed with the room size.

The charge of 3 Euros per pool towel and 8 euros per bathrobe were, in my opinion, excessive. I couldn't personally give a dash about the euros it just felt mean from the beginning and created a slightly sour taste.

The restaurant in-house is incredible. The chef knows his stuff. We ate 5 meals (out of 5 nights) and absolutely enjoyed each and every one. Each course is done with a light touch - something that hugely appeals to me and the chef's reductions in sauces are beyond reproach. Sublime. My only comment is that we had to salt everything up in order to get the peaks of excellence in the food. This is a minor quibble - salt is provided, however after 5 nights of reaching for the salt (which we rarely have to do) it seemed an area of oversight in balance from the kitchen. But oh gosh the food really was amazing - no question.

The atmosphere at dinner is very very quiet. We got used to it over our time here but it would be lifted with a drift music. A hint of classical in the background would surely have meant we didn't all feel we had to talk in hushed silence throughout our meal. In saying that the setting is second to none. Sitting in the courtyard with the 200 year old plane trees silhouetted in the deep blue sky was mesmerizing. A stunning setting.

Service at dinner and the cleaning of the rooms were exacting to the highest level. The room cleaning in particular was outstanding to say the least. Standards are high here and this evident throughout every detail in this hotel.

Overall La Bastide de Boulbon is popular for obvious reasons. For us if it wasn't for the amazing food in the evenings and the grounds, the room itself wouldn't have been enough to win us over. On that point breakfast is again charged separately at 15E per person. We took this option on our first morning and whilst once again the setting amazing the atmosphere could have been cut with a knife. So stilted and quiet we decided to do our own thing from then on (again not a financial decision simply a personal one).

Yes, come here, it's beautiful but it's not the best of the best in my own opinion and if I'd read reviews that had stated this from the outset I would have booked elsewhere - there's just that spark lacking that I've come to enjoy from such places._

The chef remains the epitome of perfection and the evening food was glorious.

Woops one more thing the town bell does make itself heard throughout the night.

First and foremost we’d like to thank you for the good comments you wrote down. Nevertheless I want to give you our reasoning behind the ‘minors’ you have written about. * The charge of 3 Euros per pool towel and 8 euros per bathrobe: We are a 3 star hotel and we are not assumed to give such a service to our client but to some it makes their stay easier and luggage smaller. The prices of the hotel haven’t been changed over the last 4 years, and according to us (and most clients) this price isn’t exaggerated / excessive in comparison of what you get. We like to maintain our basic prices, but when we do give extra service it’s reasonable that those guests who desire it, pay something extra – rather then charging other clients (without those needs) more for the standard facilities. * Breakfast is charged separately at 15E per person Not to include the breakfast in the price of the room is generally accepted and the way most hotels work, (at least should work). So those guests who’d rather not have breakfast or want to skip it for a day, simply don’t have to pay for it. (Isn’t that the most democratic?) Besides that, we rather offer a brunch with plenty to choose from then the typical French breakfast. * The atmosphere at dinner is very very quiet On our terrace there is the typical Provence sound of the Cigalles, sound of the fountain, trees, a harmony which we don’t want to disturb with music. (The clients who eat in the restaurant can enjoy classical music.) Wether or wether you not agree with what we mentioned above, I do hope you understand our point of view. "de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum" There's no arguing about tastes and colors. I hope on your next holidays you’ll find what you need and we sincerely wish you all the best.

My husband and I stayed at the Bastide de Boulbon for three nights in September. It was one of the highlights of our trip through the south of France. From the moment we arrived and walked through the charming little gate, we felt a wave of serenity come over us. Whether sitting in the garden enjoying a glass of wine, taking a dip in the pool, or enjoying a beautiful dinner on the patio, we felt relaxed, welcome, and well taken care of the entire stay.

The property itself is beautiful. It is exquisitely maintained and retains all the charms of an old Provencal country house, but the rooms are nicely updated with modern comforts. It was the perfect mix of new and old. Comfortable beds, good showers, interesting art on the walls. We loved it all.

The owners, Marie-Claire and Jan, could not have been better hosts. They were both so welcoming and accommodating. They offer you plenty of privacy but are always available and prompt whenever you need anything at all. They obviously take great pride in the property and always seem to be making their way around ensuring everything is in order whether straightening up the yard or tending to the breakfast service.

On certain nights they offer dinner or apero, and I highly recommend you partake. Everything they serve is so fresh and flavorful, much of it from their own garden. We enjoyed a beautiful lamb dish one night (perfectly cooked by Jan), and a lovely cold plate of assorted vegetables, cheeses, and cured meats another night - all excellent. The elegant Marie-Claire helped us with wine recommendations as well including a delightful Cairanne that we are still talking about.

All in all this was the perfect place for exploring Provence. Central location making it easy to see many different sites, and what a lovely place to come home to at the end of the day! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Do any of the rooms have a balcony or terrace?

Good evening, As you can see on the pictures of our website, there are no rooms with a balcony (our hotel is an old bastide). One room has direct access to the garden. Anyway, everybody says we have a beautifull garden ..... Kindest regards Marie-Claire

Yes there are shower heads but they are low about waist high. As far as the differences in the rooms I can only comment on second and third floor and we stayed in rooms facing the garden. The only difference was the size of the windows. But I'm sure if you are not facing the garden the rooms would be much warmer as we had a great breeze at night. There is air conditioning and it works very well.
