High up in the mountains, surrounded by amazing plants, flowers and wild life. This is a beautiful area with an interesting history. The hotel was founded by American Quakers. It climbs up a steep hillside and they have mini buses that can run you up or down between the blocks of rooms and the restaurant. Rooms are large and very...

The views from the hotel are fantastic if you can see them. Unfortunately if the mist or rain comes you can't always see. This hotel is set on a mountain so to get from top (where my room was!) to the bottom you have to call a shuttle bus. I waited a few minutes for this once and another time...

Lets start with the good points. The view is excellent from all rooms - we stayed in the 500 level block. The second restaurant (evenings only) does good food. Er, that's it. The rooms are dated (despite only being built in the 1990s - they resemble 1970s prison blocks). Echoing corridors outside the rooms make for noisy environment. No coffee...

As I read the reviews here I wonder if I was in the same place - I know that I was, but evidently had a better experience than some. We were in the 900 level of the hotel, the views were amazing! Imagine being on top of a mountain and viewing the ocean! We had a rental car but left...

There are only two plus points.. 1)The view of the hills from the rooms 2)Shuttle service within the property There are many negative points. but I shall be brief in listing them.. 1) Unfriendly staff who spoke to us like a robot delivering information.. 2) No WiFi or coffee in rooms 3) Empty fridge 4) Pitch dark hall way when...

Extremely large property with beautiful views especially at sunset. There are multiple blocks at different levels on the mountain. The distance between blocks are quite significant which makes for good look but you have to have a shuttle to get anywhere. The rooms are large but there is no air conditioning and the windows insulation is non existing. The safe...

Just returned from a tour of Costa Rica and stayed here for two nights, we were in the 900's, which is the highest accommodation that is available up a very steep hill... the El Establo is definitely nestled in the cloud forest on Monteverde where the views and sunrises and sunsets were amazing. There were two heated semi indoor pools...

Staff excellent, breakfast excellent, available trails & activities on the property excellent. The rooms are spacious with panoramic views (we stayed at the top in te 900s). The bathroom was very nice, beds comfortable. Close to the preserve, but you do need a car. Overall, I would rate this hotel just good though because there were two specific issues with...

Our family of 4 were on an eco-adventure tour of Costa Rica. We stayed 2 nights, took in the night walk tour just up the moutain road. The resort also has zipline and hiking trails. El Establo is the original hotel in Monteverde, interesting history. Upper pool is very nice, lower pool pretty basic. Fantastic shuttle service up and down...

We stayed for 2 nights in the 400's complex on the third floor, where we enjoyed spectacular views of the ocean and a great sunset (whenever it wasn't cloudy or raining). Both restaurants were very good. We stayed at the honeymoon suite although I think there's no major difference with the standard rooms. What I really disliked about our room...
