Detailed Reviews
Bondi Beach Backpackers is a good, reasonably priced place to stay in Bondi Beach. The location is great, just a half a block from the beach. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance and it's right next door to the post office.
Richard, the manager, was super helpful and went above and beyond the call of duty when something of mine went missing. Because of all the CCTVs around the place he was able to determine that I was the culprit!! It turned out that I had the missing item with me when I walked by one of the cameras! I had absentmindedly carried it with me instead of leaving it on my bike like I usually do! 😝
Lily, the live-in, assistant manager, was very accommodating and helpful as well. She brings a colorful and cheerful presence to the place and is almost always available to help out with minor or major needs.
I stayed in Room 6 for a couple of months. There was a bedside table on either side of the bed with a lamp on each. There was a dresser where I was able to put most of my clothes away and there was an extra bunk bed where I spread out the rest of my stuff. I found the mission style bed to be quite comfortable and it matched nicely with the side tables and dresser.
In the main lounge area, just off the kitchen, there are a couple of big tables with lots of different games. I particularly enjoyed the two chess boards, even though I lost more than I won! There are lots of other games as well and a place for charging one's mobile device. The kitchen has plenty of space for storing one's food, both in and out of the fridge. Richard was good enough to get some extra mixing bowls when I mentioned that there was a need for some! An unexpected amenity was that we weren't required to clean our plates and bowls and silverware, just our pots and pans!
There was lots of space outside in a protected courtyard and I was able to safely store my bike there. The bike parking was only partially covered so I got a rain cover to protect it fully from the rain. One of the guests found some used exercise equipment so it's possible to get a bit of a workout if you so desire. Once a month, or so, there is a pot-luck meal and there is a gas range outside to cook your food. That's really nice, particularly when the weather is good.
All in all, Bondi Beach Backpackers was a comfortable, friendly place that I recommend.

Stayed here to avoid the heavy rain Sydney got recently. It’s a really great Bondi location, super close to the beach and shops and only a 2 minute walk to the bus stop to get into Bondi junction and Sydney. Rooms were very budget, cheap bunk beds squeaked and swayed when the top person climbed on, very cramped and no where to lock large belongings- small lockers were outside the rooms. Staff chucked belongings under the beds when vacuuming, I am a neat person and had a very tidy pile of belongings including my thongs (flip flops) neatly placed next to my suitcase. When I got back from downstairs one shoe had been flung into the unknown never to return. Bathrooms were very small, only two toilets but very clean. No fan so they got very hot very quickly and the whole room flooded when someone showered and I saw many people slipping. Not a lot of indoor communal space to sit however the kitchen was clean, well stocked and they washed all your dishes which was wonderful. Compulsory $1/day charge on top of price for free food and surfboards and other sports equipment which is great if you want to take advantage of that but I couldn’t eat any of the food and wasn’t interested in using the sports equipment, but $1 isn’t much. Overall, good budget accomodation for a few nights, for people who want to hit the town, not good for families and not ideal for people who want to sleep.

For a hostel it was pretty good. Staff were all amazing and really friendly. We had booked a twin room but ended up staying in a room with 8 beds. considering the bathrooms were shared they were always moderately clean and in good enough condition, only downside was that the kitchen was pretty unkept

This has been my worst experience of a hostel yet, and I would not stay here again/ recommend to others who want a friendly and chilled environment. This place is constantly noisy with music on and very busy with people. The ‘quiet hours’ are supposedly between 10pm and 10am however ridiculously loud music was being played until past this time and people were then shouting and running around the place right outside the rooms including the staff who live there. Hoovering woke us up at 7am also which doesn’t adhere to the ‘quiet times’ so you can’t even get a good 8 hours sleep in this place. There are condescending and rude signs up all over the hostel in the kitchen/ bathroom etc which can be interpreted as intimidating. The staff are very bolshy and rude~ telling a customer to ‘f**k off’ on the phone when they had some queries in-front of lots of us checking in, which doesn’t set a good precedence for the place. I was also filling my water bottle at the sink when an employee was stood right over me and became impatient, taking the tap away from me to use it herself without asking first. The kitchen was filthy, and they charge a hidden $2 per night per person to do your washing up, but you still have to wash all pots/ pans etc and for free pasta / rice which we were told is left from people at the hostel anyway. You’re also charged $100 for your room key incase you lose it (and I’m sure a tiny key doesn’t cost $100, so it’s another sneaky money making scheme). We also booked an 8 person dorm at a higher cost, however when we got to our room this was a 10 person dorm and we had been put in. When queried we were told only 8 people were going to be in there but more people kept coming in. When we queried this the staff member was very rude and blamed the fact she was hungover and said ‘that’s the owner for you, he’s a business man’. Very odd attitude at this place and no one has respect for anyone else. When checking out, we asked to leave our bags for the day which is pretty standard at hostels and no trouble, however we were told there’s a fee unless we left a review on ‘how much we liked the place’. We were therefore bribed into leaving a good review in-front of the owner in exchange for ‘free’ baggage storage~ so don’t be fooled by good reviews. Only good thing was the bed was comfortable enough (although no curtains around them so absolutely no privacy) and it was close to the beach.

Bondi Backpackers has absolutely everything you want!
The location cannot be more convenient with a 39 second walk to Bondi beach whilst being surrounded by excellent cafes, restaurants, bars and shops!
The staff are incredible. They go above and beyond to ensure your stay is comfortable and smooth. They are available to help with any queries and do all they can to meet your needs. Rich is a star!!
The cleanliness is superb! With housekeeping staff ensuring that communal hallway, bathrooms, toilets etc are all spotless!
Rooms have plenty of space for everyone, the kitchen is spacious too with plenty of fridge space and the communal areas are great for socialising! It even has an outside area too!
I can’t believe what you get here at Bondi Backpackers for such a good price too!

Just awful, couldn’t wait to leave. Dirty and uncomfortable. Way too expensive for what you get. No lockers for bags only small ones that can’t get much in.
The rooms are stuffy, uncomfortable and some bunks didn’t even have ladders or plug sockets.
You also get charged $2 per night for tea and pasta which they take out of a $100 deposit???????
Rich the owner is rude, miserable and not a people person. Treats guest and staff like children. Was so condescending even when you ask him the smallest questions and just went out of his way to make his guest feel uncomfortable.
Honestly the worst experience I’ve had at a hostel, will never return and will advise other people the same.
Please don’t waste your money. The only good thing is that it is the other people staying there are really nice and is close to beach. Apart from that it’s not worth it, spend the money elsewhere you’ll have a much better time!

The most awfully disgusting and patronising staff I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. ‘Elle’ on reception greeted us by stating how hungover she was and asking another guest whether he ’groped anyone last night’. Upon questioning blatant issues with our room we were met by no apology, however a patronising and condescending response with ‘I was so out of it’, with no resolution to our issues.
The rooms are disgusting and have no privacy. Despite paying extra for a smaller room they will not adhere to this and throw as many people as they want into the rooms.
DO NOT STAY HERE.

Great location, great atmosphere and lovely staff who couldn’t have been more helpful. This is a bargain for staying in the center of Bondi beach 1 minute from the beach, bars and restaurants. Thanks and I will definitely come back.

I stayed at Bondi Beach Backpackers for two nights. The location is great, and they offer a range of facilities, although you pay for them through your deposit. The bathrooms were clean, which was appreciated. However, I personally wouldn’t return to this hostel.
There were a few indoor cockroaches, and the shuttle service to the airport—advertised on the website—was not available.
The biggest issue, though, was the manager, Rich. There was a problem with the refund of my deposit due to an error in my account details. Instead of handling it professionally, he acted insulted and not onlt treated me like a burden for taking up his time but also told me so. His attitude is unpleasant and creates a tense atmosphere at the hostel, making the place feel anything but relaxed. He also verbally mistreats both guests and his staff, with no regard for customer service. His arrogance and condescending manner make it rare to encounter such poor service.
While he seemed eager for reviews, it's clear that his efforts to appear helpful are just an act. There is no genuine service here—it’s a bad joke.

The staff was extremely unprofessional and unfriendly. I had a private room and the host of the hostel messed up the key situation 2 times in 24 hours which led to people just walking into my room with a key they had received, scaring me both times and making me feel very unsafe. Due to there not being any isolation in the room and the windows broken it was extremely cold and when asking the host for a solution he simply did not care. Due to those reasons, as well as it being extremely loud all night in the hostel i had to terminate my stay, even though the reasons were presented clearly I did not receive a refund for the 2 additional nights I had paid for.
