I thought this would be a great place to stay, but sadly the staff and cleanliness/ maintenance let it down. Such a shame because the rooms are nice and spacious and well equipped. It’s one of those places where you get the sense they just want your money.
We paid ahead of time, and also wanted wifi, so paid for that. Upon check in, we were told that wifi was included, but they didn’t bother to refund our money already paid. It wasn’t a huge sum, so no big deal. But if it is included, why not say so on the booking page? Amyhow, I was injured so was unable to walk / hike with my friend. So we asked for a late check out. They would only do so for an additional $40 fee. Which we paid. So then I had the cleaners come to our room at 9.30 am, and then about every 10 or 15 minutes from then to check if we were still there! No fewer than three separate people came to check. At one stage, the cleaning lady literally left her trolley of cleaning goods right outside the door (which was also where I happened to be sitting, with the only outside looking space in the place! So I kindly asked if she could move the trolley so I could at least have a view without the trolley right there. Which she did. So it was then positioned right outside the kitchen window. Sigh. And they continued to come past our room (which was on the end) every few minutes. If they didn’t want us there, then they shouldn’t have allowed us to pay more for a late check out. It was very frustrating. We had numerous other places on this holiday where they were fine with a later checkout without an additional charge. It really left a bad taste.
The kitchen was well equipped but over half the dishes we tried to use were dirty. So there was not any checking of the kitchen items when visitors checked out. The frying pan had a broken handle and was filthy. I told them about it, so they could fix it for future guests. And virtually all of the coffee cups had tea stains in them, even if they were “clean”,‘ so they could certainly do with a good scrub.

For me this was above average but not quite worthy of four stars. We had an apartment which was a good size though a little dark. It was nice and quiet with no external noise, and considering folk get up very early to do the Tongariro Crossing, that was an unexpected bonus. The apartment was clean, the kitchen was suitably equipped, and the sofas great for crashing out on! I didn’t find the bed comfy - the sheets in both rooms seemed slightly damp, for some reason. My biggest bugbear though was having to spend $5 every 24 hours for wifi, and then only for 2 devices. We didn’t even scrape the surface of the 5GB we had to purchase. It seemed a bit of a rip-off. On a positive note, though, the lodge is in a good location, easy to find and surrounded by good eating places. And the laundry gets ten out of ten - modern, easy to use machines which left the clothes so lovely and warm!

Yes internet is always a good conversation. We offer 200mb per person each day if you do need more we offer 10gb for $5 for multiple devices 24 hours. Our streaming in this area being rural is not like the city and we dont offer unlimited wifi for all guest as this will not work with our rural connections

We arrived at Plateau Lodge on 12th Jan 2020. Not a bad campervan park, with the usual camping facilities and lovely views of the National Park and Mt Ngauruhoe. Nice kitchen & dining area, handy Tongariro shuttle service.
However, the showers were a bit grubby and had no partitioned dry area in which to towel yourself. Wifi was extra, and the cost of washing and drying was double what we'd paid in other parks.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us. sorry to hear our bathrooms area grubby. As you can see thsi feedback is normal for us. Our campground is very different to others as we have only 9 sites and 4 showers & loos, open kitchen in the Lodge for all to use 24 hours. We dont ask guests to clean the bathrooms after use like other campgrounds we clean hem twice a day

We stayed here ahead of doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, for which it is ideally located about a 30 minute drive from the end car park (less from the start car park). However, the room was small and cramped (with barely enough space to open two suitcases at the same time) as well as being extremely hot. With no air conditioning to cool it, we left the windows open but were then inundated with bugs as there were no screens. This lowered sleep quality as the room, even with windows and doors open in an attempt to create a draft, was still very warm during the night. Staff were very busy and therefore not as helpful as might have been hoped. Inquiries about the shuttle from car park to car park resulted in just being handed some NZ phone numbers as the Lodge only helps facilitate accommodation to start and end to accommodation transport. Whilst I appreciate the Lodge may make money from the latter, more assistance in booking the car park to car park would have been helpful, especially as there was no phone for use in the room and wifi came at a cost of $5 per day for two devices only. Whilst this isn't excessive, it is the only place we faced a cost for wifi in NZ (having stayed predominantly in motels and bed and breakfasts at the same price point as this Lodge). The room and bathroom were clean and tidy and the shower was excellent. However, I would give this an overall score of 2.5 stars - this could easily be improved by adding some screens on to the windows, making it easier to control the temperature and flies, and having better engagement between staff and customers.

Plateau Lodge has all you'd want for doing the Tongariro Crossing. The rooms in the main lodge are basic, but the bathroom facilities are well maintained and although bathroom facilities are shared, there are plenty of different shower cubicles. It reminded me of a well run hostel.
We were quite late getting in, but I called the owner and she kindly left the key out when reception had closed. I highly recommend booking Plateau Lodge's transport + meal package for doing the crossing. They also own one of the main shuttle companies so it's a well organized operation.
It's near the "main street" in National Park village so you can walk down to have a meal at Schnapps Bar or one of the other options when you finish the crossing.

I never leave reviews but this really needs to be said so others don't waste their money here! We stayed in the new studio containers and paid extra for private bathrooms only to find that the pipes were frozen and we had no water until the afternoon. When we spoke to the owners I was met with an argumentative reaction and no apology until it was asked for. The owner said that it happens all the time and that no, she did not think that customers should be warned that this is a possibility. She aggressively stated that this is how it is when living at high altitude and why didn't we just use the shared bathroom. She was unwilling to see from our point of view, that we had PAID EXTRA for private bathroom facilities that WORK! Furthermore, my family also stayed at the accomodation (with shared facilities) and they had no hot water in the morning. Upon arrival they were given the key and went to their room only to find it had not been cleaned. Avoid staying here if you expect quality service, because you will not get it here.

We had a very good stay at the lodge, upon arrival we were given our pitch and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the pitch we were given for a campervan which was also very private, this also include our own bench. The garden area was very tastefully planted and maintained. Due to the weather we used the in house facilities, kitchen and the lounge with had a very homely feel, warm and spacious. We also took advantage of the free hot tub for 30 mins which was very relaxing and clean after a long drive. The shower/toilet facilities were some of the best and cleanest we have used all over our travels in New Zealand. Would definitely recommend!

This lodge is right in the middle of National Park village, plenty of places to eat within easy walking distance as well as a nice cafe/post office and well stocked shop. Main village with Tongariro visitor centre and base for all walks, short and long is around 15 mins drive. The lodge can also arrange a shuttle for those doing the Tongariro Crossing.
The rooms at the lodge are a nice size and clean. For those self catering there were adequate utensils etc. There is a small laundry room. Internet is charged at $5.00 per day, bit of a rip off this day and age. The staff are fine without being overly friendly, some need to learn to look away from their computer and at least acknowledge waiting guests. But they are efficient and are generally helpful.
If i ever went back to this are, I would be happy to stay here again.

Stayed in one of the king pods for one night. Perfect for us. Not a lot of room inside, but they had everything we needed. They added an outdoor tub on each pod’s deck, but with the close proximity to other pods and the road, we were too modest to try it. Shower inside had great water pressure, bed was comfortable. Would stay here again.
