Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a nice place to stay considering the cost was quite reasonable. After hiking the Tongariro Crossing, it was nice to come back to a place with a nice hot shower in the en suite.
Beds were a bit on the soft and spongy side, but otherwise a great little room.

absolutely loved this place. Spent 2 nights in the Ruapehu wing and we loved it. Housed 10 of us including kids, continental breakfast was yum. Service was fantastic and it was handy to Whakapapa. The place was warm and inviting and we'll definitely be booking in next season

Even at the seam in the courtyard, it was clear that little importance is placed on the upkeep of the facilities. (Grass grows on the driveway, bushes are not trimmed, rubbish is lying around, etc.). The situation continues at reception. The staff are unkempt.
The rooms are very worn (holes in the carpet) and the mattresses are saggy. The cleanliness also leaves a lot to be desired.
The outdoor seating is very run down and broken - risk of injury
Pictures of the kitchen and bathroom on the internet do not reflect reality
Reception is only open until 6 p.m.
The WiFi only works to a limited extent.

This was the worst reception I have ever encountered at any accommodation. We arrived just before 7pm on Friday evening. There wasn't any parking available. Right in front of the reception area was parking with cones. We removed a cone just to check in and ask where we had to go. As I have an injury and have crutches. We just wanted to check in. The owner/manager came out not saying please remove your car but just super rude saying back out, back out. We tried to explain that we just wanted to check in but he was just ignoring us constantly saying back out. My husband double parked to unload our stuff asking the man if it was his car that he is blocking in. He flat out ignored my husband. After my husband asked him for the 3rd time he shouted why do you want to know if its my car. He then said do you want your money back.....where would we go at 7pm on a Friday evening? Believe me we would if we could. He also said we arrived like we owned the place. Which definitely wasn't true. We juat didn't know where to go. Eventually we parked in the road me struggling with my crutches. The accommodation itself was ok. Still had open soap etc in bathrooms from previous people. The owner made that we will definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone. Wish I saw all the previous reviews about him, but it obviously doesn't bother him that people won't book again.

The unfriendly, rude, condescending American man who handled our booking and stay.

The shower head was broken in one of the bathrooms.

Lodge manager failed to provide enough toilet paper in the bathrooms.

There were not enough communal spaces, and the kitchen was very dirty.

The beds were uncomfy and the lighting in the rooms were terrible.

The doors to the toilet cubicles were too low so other guests could see over.

Take knifes and bed bug spray when you visit this joint.
There are 3 knifes in kitchen - none of them could even cut a slice of cheese, not enough pots, pans, glasses or mixing bowls. We had to go buy our own.
Forget about Wi-Fi because there is none! So you can't watch TV unless you settle for an old DVD.
Parking spaces too small en not enough.
My husband's body is covered with BED BUG bites.
We will NEVER return to this Lodge again.

It is spacious and warm - but it's the only positives

Overall a good place to visit, clean and tidy.
We had 4 adults and shared a room. Pretty comfortable.
Lovely lounge rooms which would be cosy in winter.
Few easily fixed issues. Kitchen is rather cluttered with stuff. One of the only three tables was covered in empty wine bottles and old floral arrangements.
Ensure bathroom there was 4 of us but only really one usable hook. Also weird handle above sink that you hit your head on when brushing teeth.
Lots of random pieces of firewood around and old floral and tree pieces. And kitchen was quite dark and cramped as visitors could only use one side
But overall was perfectly fine for our 2 night stay.

We booked the family room. Got very little sleep as it’s right above the kitchen which was busy and noisy with inconsiderate people to god knows what time. The noise started up again at 5am.
The room itself was fine, decent shower. Tv only had 3 channels when it worked properly.
Parking was ok but pretty close together.
We wouldn’t stay again.

worst motel throughout my life, rude and disgusting staff, please don't come, i am going to lodge a complain to the authority or police for the rudeness, disgusting and threatening service. i come in with a group of friends, so i am not sure wht had been converse between staff and my friend, and i came in early to check in, i was threatened for not communicating with my friend earlier, he screams and yell at me for what i do not know. i am going to see the police or authority regarding this. Absolutely disgusted by this, yelling at client for what he does not know.

Response from Rita A, Owner at Howards Mountain Lodge
Responded 5 Aug 2015
It's never pleasant to hear comments like yours but your own behaviour is the root of the problem. Being a paying guest is not a lciense for you to behave however you like. Far from arriving'early' as you say you were in fact here at 11.20 pm. At that point you began banging on our door (annoying but OK) as well as the doors of rooms with other guests in them (NOT OK and totally inexplicable). When I asked you to be quiet you just started yelling louder about your rights as a customer. My priority by this point was the rights of all the other guests you had decided to ignore. I know you had a horror trip due to trusting a GPS and were in the midst of some domestic arguement with your fellow travellers but that isn't any excuse either. Your poor sister who booked the whole thing had the good sense to phone earlier and knew which rooms were yours and where they were, they were all open and the keys inside waiting for you. It transpired that you also knew so just what you were doing making all the noise I really can't understand. Thre is no 'authority' or you to report me to and the police won't care either. This is a matter of personal behviour and yours was well out of line and it was my place and duty to tell you to stop disturbing other guests. Given your behaviour you should consider yourself lucky I didn't ask you to just leave. I realise that culturally you felt the need to save face the next day with an apology from me but you didn't deserve one or the saving of face if you won't take responsibilty for your own behaviour.
