Detailed Reviews
What a fantastic place to stay. Right from the start we were made to feel very welcome. Excellent service, very comfortable beds, clean rooms and well equipped kitchen.
The shuttle service to and from walking the tongario alpine crossing was made easy and affordable.
This is our favourite place to stay near the mountain. We will be back.

A lovely, albeit very brief stay at Manowhenua lodge. Host Tracey is warm and friendly, and helped us feel right at home. Our room was warm and cozy, with high quality bedding on comfy beds and what looked like new carpets. Thank you so much!

Very welcoming hosts and owners (Tracey and Thomas) who want you to feel at home. Clean and comfortable, with well equiped shared kitchen (even has a deep freezer) and very large rec room with lazy boys, couches, pool table, ping pong table, board games, and fireplace in the winter.
We stayed in room 12, queen bed, close to the kitchen. Bed and linens comfortable.
Extremely generous allotment for free wifi - you’re given a code and get 5 Mb each which is good for 48 hrs from first log in.
Great value, lots of parking space, and handy that they also operate National Park shuttles. We took the 7 am shuttle.
Highly recommend!

+1
Have a visit Mt Ruapehu Area, we spent one night at this lodge. My room was very good, with double and single bed, clean and comfy. The shared showers and toilets were clean and tidy. The best was the shared kitchen, spacious with plenty of kitchen tools and you can prepare and literally cook your meals here, great. The shared dining and ammenities was nice with large TV, books and table tennis. This lodge is one of the pick up and drop off points for shuttle buses to Mt Ruapehu if you do not want driving your car to the mountain, which could by busy and hard to find parking spaces in the peak holiday times. And the last and good was cheerfull and helpful staffs.

Very nice hosts. They make you feel you're part of their family! Tracey is an experienced hiker herself, and will give you good advice about alpine crossing and other walks.
Very clean and tidy accommodation. We stayed two nights, and enjoyed it a lot!
The next time we come to this area, we will definitely stay with them again.

Fantastic place to spend the night before a hike in the National Park. Welcoming, clean, tidy, everything we needed was available. A quiet, comfortable sleep. Kitchen well set up for cooking and storing food in the large fridge/freezers.

Gets the job done, but not exceptional. Common refrigerator is DISGUSTING, smells like someone died. Nice common area but is a little cold temperature-wise. Staff are rarely, if ever, at the front desk -- always need to page someone to get a question answered, which is annoying.

Many people wish to do the Tongarira Crossing, including myself. Sat having drinks with a few friends chatting about New Zealand's natural beauty and its not long before someone mentions the Tongarira Crossing. "I want to do that one day" is slowly shouted by everyone and before you know it one person is given the task of organising it. This time that person was me.
I found Ski Haus on a website along with many others at similar prices. What stood out for me when selecting a backpackers was the price $25 per night! Then there's the return transport to the Crossing itself - the cheapest at $25 each. Then there's the free use of indoor hot pool - clean and well-spaced. But the clincher was Izzy at Ski Haus. Speaking with her over phone and email, she was always prompt and clear with her responses. The changes of our plans, the fluctuating numbers in our group, the request of a late arrival, an earlier bus, a packed lunch and a difficulty in payment were delt with brilliantly. We were made to feel welcome and all our needs were met and then some, for it was Izzy who at our request arranged, booked and paid for our transport.
Our 6 bedded dorm room was well-spaced with natural light. There were plenty of clean showers with unlimited hot water. Our food and drinks left in the kitchen fridge were untouched and the kitchen itself was clean and tidy at all times, but perhaps a little too small for all guests. The lounge was friendly, spacious and well designed. A stroll accross the road and your at the local watering hole, a friendly place with beautiful furniture. Our packed lunch was great value at $8 and included a scrummy homebaked muffin. Ski Haus doesn't have the nicest decoration inside but the hospitality, its pricing, the staff's organisation and the comfort of Ski Haus makes it to my top ten best places to stay, and I've travelled a fair bit.
So if like me you want to do the Tongarira crossing or perhaps in Winter you wish to go skiing in the national Parks, but you don't have the funds to go for luxury accommodation but want clean, warm, comfortable place to rest, recouperate and enjoy then consider Ski Haus. Our group was split over 2 single-sex dorm rooms, but I see that they do other rooms too.

Booked a twin room with shared bathroom for my weekend getaway from Auckland. Overall the hotel is showing it's age with stained carpet, worn wood furniture and faded sheets, but it's clean enough for the weekend and hey, you get what you pay for.
As I went during the ski season, the placed was packed for the weekend and there were heaps of noisy youths who seem to like to stand in the corridor outside my room for their conversations. And they seem really excitable because they like to talk at the top of their voices even till late at night. The kitchen was also filthy with unwashed dishes, crumbs and leftover food bits, but again I think the youths are the culprit here again. I won't say the management are totally faultless here, as they should exercise some crowd control. Hence only 3 stars.
Good for the weekend as it's cheap and relatively close to the ski fields, but I won't recommend for long stays.

It seems to be the cheapest Option in the village. There is a reason for, because it could need a makeover. Nevertheless it is all clean and whatever you expect you will find, just not State of the art. We were there with friends and had the whole Place to ourselves, which was Great and possibly addes a plus to our experience. The Managers were very friendly and helpful. The Intercity Bus Stops right in Front of it.

Hi miicooineurope, Thanks for your review of Ski Haus. We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found Ski Haus to be very clean and our Managers helpful.
