This is the ONLY place to stay if you’re visiting tongariro national park! Anywhere else would be missing out on the experience of a lifetime. The accommodations are so homey. Lots of beautiful antique furniture, very comfortable bedding, and amazing products. Our group did one of the alpine crossing shuttles and our amazing hosts at the lodge prepared us both breakfast and lunch in advance of our 6 am departure. They delivered it to our room the night before. It was delicious!! Beyond that, the lodge has a drying room. Our group LOVED that feature. It was very rainy on our trip here so we had lots of wet clothes and gear. The drying room got everything all ready for our next day of hikes after the first day had us soaked to the bone. Our second morning here, we had breakfast in the lodge. It was a true highlight of our stay. Our hosts were the most lovely people. So accommodating and the breakfast was delicious. Plenty of hot coffee, water, and orange juice, as well as a beautiful arrangement of yogurts, porridge, and hot breakfast options!! Please stay here !! Our family loved it here and will certainly be staying here again! We would all travel back from the US just to stay here again! It was easily our favorite spot we stayed on our trip!

We loved our 4-night stay at Tongariro Crossing Lodge! We were made to feel welcome right from the moment we were picked up at the train station. We stayed in the Pipiriki Suite, and enjoyed having access to a kitchen, as well as a room big enough for the whole family (3 of us). The buildings are older but well maintained and very charming. There are lovely views from the front porch when the weather is clear. We also enjoyed the Lodge breakfast a couple of mornings, which was delicious (and had plenty of gluten free options). The location was fantastic, with restaurants and a small supermarket within walking distance. Unfortunately the weather was awful and our Alpine Crossing tour was cancelled, but Louis and Marina did their best to make our stay enjoyable anyway. They recommended walks to do during breaks in the weather (including arranging a shuttle to Whakapapa), provided us with board games when the rain set in, and even loaned us their personal car one day. We also used the free laundry and drying room to catch up on our washing mid-trip. We were leaving on an afternoon train so they gave us a free late checkout, drove us to the station, and when we discovered the train was delayed they drove us back to the lodge to wait in comfort (and even provided snacks!). We look forward to staying here again when we come back again to tackle the Alpine Crossing (weather permitting)!

This was a great place to stay at Tongariro National Park. It’s a close drive to everything. The room was homely and hosts were very friendly. The free laundry was an added plus. I can also recommend the breakfast.

I booked the tongoriro package for my bday. When I arrived on the train I was promptly picked up by the owner ( complimentary ) since the room was ready I was also given an early check in. I stayed in the whakapapa suite which immediacy transported me to the Victorian era with its beautiful decor . The living room was equipped with a minibar and microwave, and flat screen tvs were available in both rooms. The water pressure in the shower was amazing and so needed after the Alpino Crossing . The lunch package for the crossing was nutritious and the perfect amount of food. Breakfast was an experience all was fresh and delicious and served on gorgeous English China. I felt like a Knight . If I could I would give this place 10 stars. I felt at home. Actually better than home. The owner then dropped me at the train at departure. Late check out was also offered I must say that the lodge is pretty busy in season so early check in or late check outs are not always possible. Don’t come here. Run!

We stayed two nights in March 2023 and used it as base camp for the Tongariro crossing hike. We enjoyed our stay and the hospitality of Louis, the manager. We availed ourselves of the breakfast option, which was also worked out well. Our two bedroom room was perfect and we'd stay here again given the opportunity to do so. It's great waking up to a volcano in your back yard.

The breakfast and lunch were excellent and the room was recently renovated. We also appreciated the guest laundry. Good options for the morning and return shuttles which is nice after a 20 km hike. Perfect way to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Pure Kiwi hospitality.

We stayed here for two nights; one of us did the epic Tongariro Alpine Crossing (in the rain!) and the rest loved the Taraniki Falls walk. You can walk here from the train station. They drove our luggage down for us when we departed. It is an older facility but nicely set up with tea/coffee in room. Some of us had a kitchenette. The Four Square (20 min walk?) has groceries, so we could cook in and arrange lunches. You can also walk to restaurants and the bar. Complimentary laundry and a drying room. If you wish to depart to hike early they will deliver your continental breakfast to your room the night before. We enjoyed the continental breakfast (including toasted homemade bread and divine plum jam from local plums) so much the first morning that none of us tried the “cooked breakfast” the next morning. Note that most of the hiking in this huge park will require shuttle transport if you didn’t come with a car. We found van drivers to be charming and helpful.
