This was my home base for my Tongariro hike, and I enjoyed it. Everything I needed was conveniently provided, location is good, and the room was very quiet, allowing me to sleep early both before and after the hike. Note - the breakfast isn’t cooked fresh for you but rather a more basic set of things like bread, yogurt and packaged fruit pieces plus OJ and milk; more than enough for me!

We stayed here 3 nights. Let’s get the one real negative out of the way: lots of road noise! Our room #1 is right on the end of the property, but only 30 meters from the highway. There was a lot of road noise all night with lots of large trucks zooming by. We understand that Motorway #1 had a washout recently, and consequently many trucks are taking this highway until the washout is fixed. Hopefully this will be fixed soon, as we did not get a full night’s sleep.
On the positive side, everything else was really good. Hosts Karl and Maria are delightful and very helpful. Our room was clean and cozy. We had 1 queen and 2 single beds, which was nice since we laid out our clothes on the single beds. The room was average size and could have used more seating (a small sofa) and more tables or counter space. The bathroom was nice size with a separate room for the toilet. The shower was OK; the pressure was low and it was hard to keep the water from flowing into the bathroom. The kitchen was well supplied, but the stove/oven should be replaced with something that heats up faster (it’s underpowered). The bathroom sink could use an update, as the hot and cold faucets are separate and difficult to control the temperature (hot water was too hot). Otherwise, the room had been painted recently and the flooring is relatively new. The sauna is quite nice and relaxing.
We recommend this accommodation with the caveat that the road noise will decline significantly when Highway #1 is fully reopened.

We stay there for three nights with two young kids while we go for 2 days ski.
Lovely places, and very friend host. They give us some advise and recommend to travel with young kids, we are really appreciated. Also they also tidy up the room every day for you. Thank you for that. We would love to come back to stay with you if we go ski again next year :)

We had an excellent stay at this place. The couple how run it, are very friendly, we immediately had a nice conversation and the lady offered us to feed the alpaca’s, wich we enjoyed a lot! Hospitality is very high here. The unit was super clean with a beautiful view. Beds where very comfy. We made ourselves a simple meal, the kitchen is well equipped, one spot of the stove didn’t work, but there was also an oven and a microwave, so dinner turned out fine. The unit had double glass, so it was nice and quiet at night (we had the corner unit on the right had side) and the heater worked well. We only slept here one night, because I booked the night after in the Tongariro Chateau. Mountain Heights is so much nicer than the Chateau and more value for money. If I ever travel again to this part of New-Zealand (I come from the Netherlands) I will definitely stay longer at Mountain Heigths.

after being informed our other accomdation was closing down, we were lucky to discover here & book a one night stay.
the room was fabulous, at the front of building, with a balcoy looking out to the mountains. everything was clean, comfortable & cozy.
A good nights sleep, we were not bothered by road noise.
A basic breakfast was left for us in the upstairs kitchen, that was enough to start our day, plenty of tea/coffee available.
There are 2 eating places a short drive away, but only one was open on our stay, which was understandably, crazy busy.
Thank you.

What a great find, close to amenities and the Tongariro Crossing hike. Lovely and clean and warm. Full kitchen, large bathroom and very comfortable beds. Wifi was included and plenty of tv channels to watch. Parking right outside our unit with a little patio with table and chairs. Even though it was right on the main road our unit was set back and very quiet. Would definitely stay again. Hosts were lovely and helpful with suggestions.

The staff was very rude, we arrived and they kept saying 'no children, no children' even though it says child friendly on their website.
I don't recommend it, the stuff has no idea how to treat customers. Don’t waste your time, there are other better places around the area.

A delightful charming rustic lodge with an intriguing history. Our standard Queen bed room was comfortable and cosy, spotlessly clean bathroom, good tea and coffee facilities, and a generous continental breakfast included. Beautiful views day and night. Close to Ohakune, Tongariro National Park and G.A.S. station/shop. We were invited to walk around the sprawling estate and feed the alpacas. Hope to do the quad bike trail next time! Maria and Karl thanks for your warm hospitality.
