The chalets were beautifully done up with a full kitchen. the benches outside were a nice touch. The early morning shuttle service to the alpine crossing was efficient though it could've been a part of a room rent given that there is really nothing else to do except the alpine crossing.

Just loved this base to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Set in peaceful farmland - one view fields, trees and cows, the other view mountains and volcanos. We asked for packed breakfast and lunch; huge quantities, so no need for the energy bars that were recommended by Lonely Planet. Instructions were clear 'The bus leaves at 5:30am. If you aren't...

Chalet was modern, stylish, clean and well-equipped, with fantastic views over the volcanoes. We enjoyed our stay very much, and the Crossing transport worked well. (My only small quibble is that the laundry facilities are inadequate - a single washing machine for the whole site. We were there over the busy New Year period and spent a lot of time...

We stayed at the Discovery for 5 nights over Christmas 2014. The grounds were well kept and the views from the cabin were superb. The staff were really helpful and the accommodation was serviced on a daily basis including Christmas Day. The cafe was very welcoming and served a great pizza. The staff were very helpful and shared much information...

Chale 22 offers the best view. We had a very nice stay here. They do not offer internet because (they say) it is technically impossible. Chalees are very new, clean and very practically designed. They are not big, but suit 2-3 people perfectly. Food on site was a bit pricey, but ok. Employees were also very nice and helpful. Unfortunately...

We spent 2 nights in Chalet 22. This is the best chalet because although it is closest to the not very busy road, there is nothing to block your view of the volcanoes. The interior is modern and functional but rather stark and definitely not luxurious. The bed was comfortable enough, the shower OK, the kitchenette quite useful. We ate...

We stayed in one of the cottages. It was nice, roomy and peaceful. Unfortunately, we had terrible weather and could not do the crossing nor enjoy the views. But Miki was super nice and helpful trying to find us activities to do nearby. She also is very knowledgeable about the mountains and treks. Great place to stay if you are...

We stayed in a 1 bedroom chalet Oct 30 and 31st. The first day the weather was cold, rainy and windy and The Crossing was not open. The next day we were leaving and the weather was beautiful. So maybe try to add an extra day to your stay. Our chalet accommodation was really nice. The chalet seemed new and...

First, as most reviews say, the Discovery Lodge is geared for a Tongariro Crossing. They get you there early, they can provide breakfast and lunch and Callum, the manager is very knowledgeable about the trek. They are working to make the property more attractive as a multi-day destination, but they have a way to go. That said, I am not...
