Peaceful secluded location
Housekeeping was immaculate, the chalet was clean, cosy and tidy.
Staff at the cellar door were amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating.
Views to die for in a serene location away from the crowds.

The FERNGROVE CHALETS in Frankland river were a pleasant surprise. We didn't want to stay in a tent while visiting the region, but wanted to try out these chalets on the Ferngrove Wine estate about 10 minutes away from Frankland River. Brilliant!! Wood stove, two bedroom (with comfortable beds!), aircon and nestled in beautiful winefields for $120 a night! We will definitely visit again, but this time for a longer time.

Room Tip: We stayed in number 5 which is a bit more isolated. Only Telstra has coverage.

Walking around the expansive vineyard on a cold winter’s afternoon. Seeing the bright stars in the clear night sky. Waking to the sun rising across rows of vines. Enjoying a complimentary bottle of wine in the chalet. These were the highlights of an overnight stay at Ferngrove Cottages. The winery has a large cellar door with wide range of good quality wines and great views of Frankland Valley. The chalet had two bedrooms, shower, kitchen, lounge, TV, reverse cycle air con. No internet or phone coverage. Clean and adequate. A good place to stay on the first night of a seven day road trip around the Great Southern region.

We randomly stopped here along our WA road trip, and having learned about the Chalets, I wish that we would have made a reservation and stayed. As it was, we ended up spending quite a bit of time in the winery, in part because of the amazing customer service skills of the wait staff, the lovely wine, and also the gorgeous facilities.

We were absolutely starving and couldn't find a place to eat, but the staff let us bring in our own picnic and have lunch at the indoor picnic tables. During that time, we were able to sample all of their wines and ended up relaxing over a bottle of their Chardonnay. The red drinkers were also very pleased with the cab sav. And I understand that Ferngrove is about to start importing their wine to the USA, which means I want to be first on their mailing list.

You can also watch parts of their winemaking happen. And the staff is happy to answer lots of questions about the process and their product. I found everyone very knowledgable and helpful.

While we cannot speak about the quality of the accommodation, if the manner of our treatment was representative, you would do well to stay here. As it is, if you're journeying through the effort a spot to this area is really quite tremendous.

Let's face it, the Frankland River area is remote. A good way from the coast, miles from Margaret River and even further from Perth. The nearest food shop was a 40 minute round trip. So finding a chalet of such quality was quite a surprise. We stayed in 4 over 5 days and this was the only one with a carpet, TV and decent heater/air-con.. Very comfortable and civilised. The price was extremely reasonable, perhaps because we were a captive market for the wine tasting. However, we bought some and who wouldn't. I made space for a couple of bottles in my baggage back to UK. A highlight of our trip, without question and it should help raise the profile of the Frankland River area as a place to visit.

Lovely quiet spot for a recharge. We try to go 3/4 times a year. Good spots within an hours drive if you want to eat out. Buying food in kojonup and picnicking near the winery is a good option. What can I say about the wine? Superb

The chalets are well built and spacious, it's just few details would make them more comfy. We stayed during a cold spell and couldn't close the bathroom window, was permanently open at 16C outside daytime, not very comfy! The wood burning stove seems bit problematic. Fire lighters would help. Generally not bad, but not brilliant either.

Frankland wine region may be off the usual tourist track - and maybe even for those from WA, having met at least two couples along the roads who were absolutely lost :-) We decided to take a loop through the backroads between Mount Barker and Manjimup and thought Ferngrove just in the middle would make the perfect overnight stop. And it was - we were the only guests that night, had the whole vineyard on our own (no, we did not go sampling grapes) and enjoyed absolute silence in the middle of nowhere. Cottage no. 5 was really nice, modern and well appointed with everything you need including a fireplace. And all of that at a very reasonable price.
Did I mention the complimentary bottle of wine yet? No? Ok, so we did sample grapes that way at least and rewarded us with a Sav/Sem for a 90km ride that day. Would have loved to sample some other wines when we checked out that morning, but 10am is just not our time for that.

Thank you Chris for your great hospitality and friendly manner. You were very informative and the wine tasting was just great The chalets are very clean and very comfortable. The birds in the tree around us are just magnificent. We have never loved a place like this for the peace and quite.
It is an out of the way place but that is the best part of it all. If you do not go out of your way to visit and stay you are missing a great moment in your life.

LOVE IT.

We spent a cold and wet week there in December 2010. We stayed in one of the two or three units near the winery; they have a couple more older units at a vineyard a few kms away.
Good value accommodation with everything you need for a self contained holiday - except for the food. Because of the cold and wet we spent our time reading, eating and watching a few DVDs.
Located right in the middle of the vineyard, with wonderful views. The sunsets were great!. The only thing that may annoy some, although it delighted us, was the cacophony of bird song at all times of the day, especially of the parrots.

Location: a bit isolated, and it's approx 10kms to the nearest shop in Frankland. However, the cost of food, especially the fresh food is rather high. A couple of eating options nearby: the Country Club a couple of days a week, and the Rocky Gulley Pub a bit of a drive away.

Swimming: there is a largish freshwater lake about 25 minutes drive away.

Wine tasting: a half dozen cellar doors are in the area, all with very good wines.

Water: I suggest taking your own water. Despite filtered their dam water a few times, it still tastes muddy. It was a pity to have to taste it at the cellar door between tasting glasses.

If you are driving down from Perth, I suggest taking the Albany Highway option (not via Donnybrook) and turning off at Kojunup. Although the distance is similar, the drive is more direct with less slow winding roads.

Finally, try to meet the gardener - as well a mowing the lawns etc, see also made the garden sculptures.
