Very nice place, people are so cool there, it is perfect if you want to have a real break and chill a bit. I stayed in a 4 beds dorm, room-mate really respectful, lockers and small fridge in the room. All the things you need, free Wi-Fi, TV room, computers, nice kitchen, no one stilling food or anything else. Safe and near the tram and the train station to get in the city. Paul the owner helped me a lot and it is really interesting to talk with him. All nationality are in there it is not like a hostel where you will find only French and German young people. Generally, they stay for a long period and are friendly and meet you to play, drink or just chat around a ciggie. I recommend at 300% this hostel.

Stayed here in May 2012 and had a good experience. Paul, the owner, is hilarious and sets the tone for a welcoming, relaxed hostel. There are many longtermers there but they were very welcoming and inclusive of the people only there for a few days. It really felt like I was hanging out at a friend's house rather than at a hostel. It was a bit dirty but overall, I definitely recommend it.

One of my fav hostels in Aus, really relaxed, fantastic location, great internet connection, good value for money.

My only criticism would be that the place really is pretty dirty, the worst i've stayed ever.

This is not a party hostel, this is a chill, relaxed place for people who want to stay in the city for a while.

To conclude i would 100% stay here again, the owner is incredible!

I stayed here last month and you will either love this place or hate it. It's full of smokers so being a non smoker this was the difficult thing. People are allowed to smoke in all rooms. The people are friendly, a bit strange some of them.but overall i was made to feel welcome. There are people that have being here for several months so it is more like a shared house than a hostel. My room wasn't ready when I arrived and two people taking up 6 beds so I didn't have a bed untill other people moved their stuff. It's not a party hostel if that's what your looking for. I may have been persuaded to stay longer if the price was slightly cheaper, between 26 and 28 dollars is a little too expensive for what you get. It's not in the centre and I only picked because its close to where I worked. Nice cafes and vintage shops in the area, it's a fair walk into the cbd but trams are easily accessible.

It's not the cleanest of hostels and on first impressions it doesn't seem that great of a place in general, but it soon grows on you. The owner is really nice and helpful...if a little crazy sometimes. There's a great atmosphere. Although there are no proper lock systems on the bedroom doors you feel secure as there is a code-entry door from the street so you won't get random people coming into the hostel. There are lockers too.
The surrounding area is a bit run down but it's a nice distance away from Melbourne central and there's a bus stop right outside, a train and a tram stop within a 5 minute walk.
Although I didn't like the hostel at first, I came to enjoy it as it has a homely feel to it and you don't feel as restricted as you would in other hostels. The internet is practically free compared to most hostels.

Atrocious unclean Hostel! from bad service , cockroaches all over the kitchen, used condoms in the showers and beds, stayed several days and the facilities were nothing less than rank, rotting with mold in the ceilings to bedbugs in the sheets .
This Hostel should be shut down! id recommend staying away at all costs !!
the true pinnacle of this lamentable experience is the owner Paul. He is a man who will kick anyone out for close to nothing. i personally saw him distastefully making inappropriate racist remarks to several traveling woman because they simply arrived 15 minutes late.
Collingwood Backpackers is a filthy rat fulled derelict dungeon ! breaking health regulations beyond comprehension
BEWARE!

Just had the most unfriendly dude on the telephone, asked if I can park for free, his answer was “free parking in Melbourne? Good luck with that” then he just hung up without letting me answer.
So I won’t even bother going there. Cheers for that ✌️

I explained when you phoned that there is street parking available that you do not have to pay for - no meters - unlike most inner areas of Melbourne. I agree that in declining your request to stay in your van in the street and pay to use our facilities, I told you " good luck with that" and hung up. Thanks for not bothering to come here, you are not welcome. We are a backpacker hostel not a caravan park.

Stayed here in April 2018, traveled solo.
Location is ok, nice walk to the CBD.
But, a few things that didn't really satisfy me: I booked a 6 bed female dorm, but when I checked in there were like 2 additional beds inside, so it was very crowded. Furthermore it said online (I think it was booking.com), that there is an AC. There was just a tiny little ven, which didn't even reach to the top bunks. One of the two bathrooms was broken (as far as I remember it was leaking onto the reception), so it was just one bathroom. When I checked out there was a guest in front of me complaining, how it is possible that other hostels maintain a certain level of cleanliness, but this one can't (which I agree with, the cleaning lady just showed up once a day to super random times and dry cleaned the middle of the room for a minute and left again, which didn't really do any help). The girl at the reception just got very rude to the guest and told him to either get along with it or to leave.

Not gonna stay here again.

You idiot, you are mistaken, you did not stay at our hostel at all. We have no female staff at reception, have never added beds to our dorms and have more than 2 bathrooms. There is no record of you staying with us at that time or at all.

This is a really cosy backpacker to me, I felt like home for a few days.

The place is more like a big shared house, doesn't really feel like a backpacker. There's two living-rooms, a backyard, good kitchen, plenty of books. A lot of furnitures, kind of old but very convenient. I had a four-beds room, and what I like is that it's not a bare room with 4 beds, 4 walls, period. Instead, there are drawers, wardrobe, table and chairs. When you need to plug your electronic devices, you find electric plugs everywhere. It's convenient, you have room to put your stuff, you feel like unpacking immediately. Wi-Fi worked great also.

People were really nice. It's true that some of them stay for quite a long period, so there's a kind of family feeling, people care a bit more about each other. They don't enter the room in the middle of the night, turn on the light and start chatting until morning comes, that's what I mean. When people know each other they don't do that.

Consequence of the long-term stay is that people LIVE here. They put their stuff a bit everywhere, because they feel like home. So don't expect a clean and sanitized hostel. It's a bit messy, that's true. But honestly, it was clean enough to me. I've seen much worse.

So, all in all a good surprise, I usually don't like to stay in backpackers, but I really enjoyed this place. I recommend it as long as you're not picky with hygiene.

Oh, and as a last word, the location (Collingwood area) is great, loads of restaurants, bars and coffees around. It's not the CBD with Starbucks and McDo, it's way better.

Hope you enjoy your stay here !

I checked in to this hostel as a walk-in. Despite not having a reservation and being fully booked.the staff was accommodating and found me a bed in one of the rooms. The Hostel has two lounges and a full kitchen with appliances. The kitchen and bathrooms were well maintained and towels are FREE!! The wi-fi worked fine and overall it was clean and a good experience. I f your staying in the Collingwood area I highly recommend this place. Great value for the money!!!
