My only criticism would be that the place really is pretty dirty, the worst i've stayed ever.
This is not a party hostel, this is a chill, relaxed place for people who want to stay in the city for a while.
To conclude i would 100% stay here again, the owner is incredible!
The surrounding area is a bit run down but it's a nice distance away from Melbourne central and there's a bus stop right outside, a train and a tram stop within a 5 minute walk.
Although I didn't like the hostel at first, I came to enjoy it as it has a homely feel to it and you don't feel as restricted as you would in other hostels. The internet is practically free compared to most hostels.
This Hostel should be shut down! id recommend staying away at all costs !!
the true pinnacle of this lamentable experience is the owner Paul. He is a man who will kick anyone out for close to nothing. i personally saw him distastefully making inappropriate racist remarks to several traveling woman because they simply arrived 15 minutes late.
Collingwood Backpackers is a filthy rat fulled derelict dungeon ! breaking health regulations beyond comprehension
BEWARE!
So I won’t even bother going there. Cheers for that ✌️
Location is ok, nice walk to the CBD.
But, a few things that didn't really satisfy me: I booked a 6 bed female dorm, but when I checked in there were like 2 additional beds inside, so it was very crowded. Furthermore it said online (I think it was booking.com), that there is an AC. There was just a tiny little ven, which didn't even reach to the top bunks. One of the two bathrooms was broken (as far as I remember it was leaking onto the reception), so it was just one bathroom. When I checked out there was a guest in front of me complaining, how it is possible that other hostels maintain a certain level of cleanliness, but this one can't (which I agree with, the cleaning lady just showed up once a day to super random times and dry cleaned the middle of the room for a minute and left again, which didn't really do any help). The girl at the reception just got very rude to the guest and told him to either get along with it or to leave.
Not gonna stay here again.
The place is more like a big shared house, doesn't really feel like a backpacker. There's two living-rooms, a backyard, good kitchen, plenty of books. A lot of furnitures, kind of old but very convenient. I had a four-beds room, and what I like is that it's not a bare room with 4 beds, 4 walls, period. Instead, there are drawers, wardrobe, table and chairs. When you need to plug your electronic devices, you find electric plugs everywhere. It's convenient, you have room to put your stuff, you feel like unpacking immediately. Wi-Fi worked great also.
People were really nice. It's true that some of them stay for quite a long period, so there's a kind of family feeling, people care a bit more about each other. They don't enter the room in the middle of the night, turn on the light and start chatting until morning comes, that's what I mean. When people know each other they don't do that.
Consequence of the long-term stay is that people LIVE here. They put their stuff a bit everywhere, because they feel like home. So don't expect a clean and sanitized hostel. It's a bit messy, that's true. But honestly, it was clean enough to me. I've seen much worse.
So, all in all a good surprise, I usually don't like to stay in backpackers, but I really enjoyed this place. I recommend it as long as you're not picky with hygiene.
Oh, and as a last word, the location (Collingwood area) is great, loads of restaurants, bars and coffees around. It's not the CBD with Starbucks and McDo, it's way better.
Hope you enjoy your stay here !
