Ngalung Kallas’s host and staff gave me a once in a lifetime experience surfing uncrowded waves and exploring the beautiful island of Sumba. It’s clear from the very first moment you set foot in the rustic, secluded, and comfortable resort that the quality of your stay is the hosts’ highest priority. The cliff top setting includes everything from a ocean viewing yoga studio to beautiful thatch roofed rooms, small and large. Connected by a fantastical rope bridge, the pool and world class right reef break are always just a few short steps away. “Aquaman” Christian Sea was a magnificent surf guide taking us to surf spots north and south, hollow and approachable. Fish caught spear fishing was a frequent delight to the already wonderful sustainable cuisine, offered in three meals a day. Inland lay hills covered in green meadows and suspenseful fog alluding to the dramatic weather found in the wet season from October to May. Changing quickly from a morning of sun to an evening of impressive rain and offshore winds. Additionally the getaway offers amenities such as cloth washing, massage, and drinks.
A must do for the adventurous!

Christian and Ka'ale Sea have created a magical place at the edge of the world...in Sumba, Indonesia, far away from the hustle and bustle of Bali, Lombok, and other, more accessible places in that country. The surf is incredible and Christian has to be the most knowledgeable waterman in the region, so he'll assess your level and get you into appropriate waves. Ka'ale has overseen a truly healthy-yet-delectable menu. There's a lovely swimming pool right in the middle of the retreat. Each room is situated so you have privacy, comfort AND awesome views of the bay at sunset. I can't imagine a better getaway for a surfer or non-surfer either.

Sumba is untouched and raw. Ngalung Kalla retreat follows this energy through their property and are doing a wonderful job at respecting the local environment. I loved the yoga shala and all the family and staff were so lovely.
The resort is nice, surrounded by beautiful nature except the local beach was disappointing. There is a lovely beach around the corner from the retreat which I reached by a small boat. I was really surprised and disappointed to realise upon getting out into the ocean there was no life jackets on board. This is really important as I’m not a strong swimmer and there was no surf boards on board to use for floating if any issue had arose. The accomodation / Bures are very basic and the mattresses were very uncomfortable. As much as I enjoyed my stay here the price needs to be halved if I am asked to pee nearby my hut in the garden not even in my pit toilet. We paid Around $400 AUD per person a night. My stay was good with plenty of positives but overall the price charge is too high for what is provided.

Hello Shell, thanks for your kind words about your stay with us. We appreciate the good comments on everything and we will make it mandatory that the small boats that took you to Cocos Beach will always carry life jackets with them. We do use dry composting toilets in all the rooms but it is fine if you'd like to pee in them if that makes you feel more comfortable. We also have several flush toilets in the retreat's common spaces that are always there for anyone anytime. For the beds we only use Firm- Orthopedic Series Elite Dr/ Smart Mattresses so the only thing we can think of is that Firm wasn't your preferred type of mattress. We understand about the rates maybe putting you off as well. Usually we are catering for more oceanic and or yoga/health centered guests - they generally are using our speedboat and jet-ski's on many surfing trips, sport- fishing trips, and sightseeing trips. Yoga/meditation classes are offered daily and of course one can't forget the all you can eat healthy farm to table food! If you aren't into either of these things then the rate could definitely seem overpriced. As far as the beds go we only use Firm- Orthopedic Series Elite Dr/ Smart Mattresses so the only thing we can think of is that Firm wasn't your preferred type of mattress. It's good to note what is included in everyones all in package- and what's not. So I will share here... The nightly room charge per adult is all inclusive of the oceanfront bungalow, all you can eat meals, snacks, smoothies, and non-alcoholic drinks. Also included is the daily yoga class, daily surf guiding, all local boat trips within 20 minutes, laundry service, wifi (in our current restaurant area), 2x daily housekeeping service, house surfboard, longboard, SUP, and kayak usage Again-thank you for your stay and for your honest review. We hope it can help others make the proper choice for a Sumba stay in the future.

It was awesome to surf uncrowded waves but I would have liked to explore more than what was offered. It was a little frustrating knowing there’s so much more waves to surf and explore beyond where they like to stick to .Christian was
not too involved but our surf guide did a great job of taking care of us. A pool/snooker table would be a good addition for down time.
The food was decent. I really appreciated that it was healthy and most of it came from their gardens but more protein and seafood would of been appreciated.
A Step up from camping but still roughing it accomodation wise. The Bure was open with no walls which I liked but I think this might be why everything always felt damp including the bed sheets. The flooring was uneven bamboo and the bed very uncomfortable. For cooling at night I was given a portable chargeable fan to put on the bed and that ran out during the night. There was a seperate dwelling for the compostable pit toilet and another for the weak small bamboo spout shower. But pee / wee to be done outside. I was surprised to experience all this while I was there considering how much they are charging.
The main dining area and lounge was much nicer and comfortable. I liked the energy and peace I felt at Ngalung but missed some basic comforts and the chance to explore more waves.

Hello JaisonT44, Thank you so much for taking the time to give us an honest review of your stay here. It really lights the flames for us as a team to provide a better guest exeprience to all in the future. We also appreciate all of the kind and appreciative things you said about your stay here. We are so happy that you enjoyed the nature the serenity and the peaceful solitude (and surf) of the area. We have always felt that guests will always come to us as much for what is not here as for what is here. All boat trips within 30 minutes are included in ones stay. Our boathouse crew are well trained and Christian and Kaale (with 40 years experience in Sumba between them) are always in the mix of recommending the best options for the next days activities to suit all guest skill levels and interests. All you have to do is "say the word" and we can let you know of other recommended surf or adventures around. We now get all of our energy from the sun so you won't need those rechargeable fans in your bunks next time you stay with us. The standing fans will keep you plenty cool. Our beds are firm posture-pedic matresses. We use high quality sheets, pillows and pillowcases. Most guests enjoy their sleep and dream experiences while here, but we are sorry to hear you did not. Our dry composting toilets have amazing views, are not at all stinky, and besides using zero water- they enable of us to recycle 100% of the nutrients into our Agroforestry systems to grow great papayas, bananas, mangos, dragonfruits, and passionfruits and many others. We are a Regenerative Retreat. We have taken sustainability and community to heart while still aiming to provide ample luxury for our guests while here. In the simplicity of Ngalung Kalla and the holistic view of nature and hospitality as complimentary forces some of the modern conveniences experienced in a normal retreat setting are put to rest as things we can simply do without in our awareness of presence and planet. That being said, we have recently added a pingpong table and an ice bath to the quiver of good times available to our guests while here. The billiards table is a great idea and we'll get that cooking!

My partner and I visited Ngalung Kalla as a friend of mine recommended to stay there while travelling in Sumba. He talked the place up and knowing him well my expectations were set high. They were met and blown away. We absolutely loved our stay there. The food was amazing. The hospitality was as though you were apart of the family from the second you arrived. So many activities are available and Christian is a guru when it comes to what to do and see in Sumba. We had an amazing time both in the ocean and experiencing the rich culture of Sumba. I highly highly recommend staying at Ngalung Kalla for an experience you will truely never forget!

My family of four (kids ages 8 and 11) just got back from a wonderful stay at Ngalung Kalla. We've been to interesting places around the world, but never anywhere quite like this. Not only did Christian and Ka'ale and their three lovely daughters make us feel welcome, but they made us feel like part of the Ngalung Kalla family. I was a little concerned that surfing would be the only activity there and our family has only done a little surfing prior to coming, but there were many other adventures to be had. Staff was warm and cheerful, and the food was fabulous. A truly unique place and we can't wait to go back!

Christian and Ka’Ale thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us. Special shout out to Bennett (awesome surf guide) and Colleen (master yoga teacher), the local staff and your beautiful daughters Cama and “The Assassinator”. What you have created at Ngalung Kalla is awe inspiring and a true adventure. We loved that we were effectively off grid, in the jungle but still had some amazing creature comforts – beautiful wholesome food, great accommodation with incredible views, daily yoga sessions, fantastic swimming pool, table tennis, ice bath and Christian’s boundless energy to prepare us for the next adventure. Thank you for your generosity and warmth. We can’t wait to get back there.
