Detailed Reviews
Wonderful place to relax and enjoy the Alentejo atmosphere. We quite liked the minimalist concrete room and loved the colonial chic of the communal lounges. This was the last place we stayed on our Vicentina coastal hike and is a very close second...almost equal first! We just felt our “welcome” when we were collected and taken to the hotel was not great and we felt very rushed as we were shown around. Nothing was really explained...and this resulted In a poor first night as we waited for dinner unnoticed and then had an extremely noisy ceiling fan which we couldn’t work out how to regulate. We couldn’t just switch it off as it was too hot. There was an unmanned reception with a number to ring but with the language barrier we thought it was easier to text our issues. We didn’t get a response but the next morning at breakfast the ownerBalthazar made himself known to us and discussed our issues. He was very professional and kindly explained things and helped us decide on a local hike for our “free” day. From that point everything was so much better not least a lower rate fan so no noise ( the control was in the fuse box...) and a good nights sleep. The bed was very comfortable with good quality linen. The food at dinner and breakfast was excellent and more than enough! Would highly recommend - just don’t be afraid to ask if there are issues and ask for Balthazar if necessary.

I stayed at Tres Marias with my wife for 2 nights while walking a section of the Rota Vicentina in May 2022. We had a twin bedded room. The room was spacious, the beds comfortable with high quality bedlinen. Everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was superb and can be taken in your room or private patio at no extra cost and dinner was excellent. We were made welcome on arrival and the staff friendly and helpful at all times. They were especially good at driving us to the start and picking us up at the end of our walk for free - which was very useful as the hotel location is so remote. The infinity swimming pool was spectacular. The buildings and furnishings are modern and beautifully designed. I would highly recommend staying here when walking the Rota Vicentina.

Finished our walking holiday off here with a fabulously chilled two night stay.Lovely countryside setting and all you hear are the sounds of nature,Rooms were large with a minimalist modern style which strangely worked in this rural setting, lots of space with plenty seating inside and outside ,large bathroom and all one needs to make your stay comfortable. Fabulous central area that includes honesty bar and kitchen inside and outside dinning areas and a large semi enclosed lounge area with log burner for the colder nights.Beakfast was a real tour de force and was served at a prearranged time of your choice between 9 to 11.We had dinner included in our stay and both nights were very good with very hearty Portuguese choices. All staff we came in contact with were friendly ,welcoming and attentive to our needs.Lovely hidden pool and sun bathing area which also includes a small sauna all in all a lovely place to spend time.

Can you believe that? A paradise after almost 3 kilometers of gravel track. Reception by handshake (the only time on our road trip), great rooms and pool. Choosing breakfast the day before is a great idea, but requires a good understanding of the sizes of the portions (just ask). Of particular note is the evening menu, which beat everything between Lisbon and Faro in terms of quality, choice, scope and value for money (EUR 22 p.p.). Be sure to drive to one of the beaches for sunset, if time permits.

A very relaxing hotel that invites you to enjoy the silence and the feeling of nature. Decorated with a refined taste in its simplicity and good taste. Combine the traditional with some design touches. For hot Diaz it has a beautiful pool.
Dinners and breakfasts are delicate and quiet. It is a hotel that invites you to relax and slow down the pace of life. The staff is correct but Olga goes out of her way with clients. I would return to the hotel without a doubt. I hope your hospitable spirit never changes.

Only stayed for one night but we enjoyed the surroundings and the hotel itself a lot.
Basic, in a good way, and very stylish infrastructures which remind of South-African lodges. The complex is nicely designed and feels airy. All inside areas were spotless.
Our evening meal was excellent and paired with very good red wine (2018 Herdade do Sobroso). Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality.

Lovely relaxing hotel in very quiet countryside. Comfortable bungalow style rooms and a pool. Even a tree house to stay in! Excellent food prepared by the wonderful chef Raphael. A real treat to stay here, especially after a walking holiday along the Rota Vincentino.

Finding somewhere to stay in the coastal Alentejo was something of a trial, but we eventually found the Tres Marias which offered bed and breakfast. The majority of accomodation in this area is self catering and is aimed at people staying for a week or so.
Contact with Claudia via email was easy, and she sent us details of how to get to them. The Tres Marias is off the beaten track, down an unmade road and once you get there it is heaven.
It is signposted off the main road (the only road!) at Ribeira da Azenha The accomodation is simply superb, there are 6 individual "rooms" but that is an understatement. They are beatifully designed, each with a mezanine where the comfy bed and stylish bathroom can be found. Downstairs is a comforable sofa and our room even had a fireplace. Each "room" has its own terrace ovelooking the wonderful garden, field of sheep and the 2 ostriches (left over from when Claudia and Balz had an ostrich farm).
Balz was persuaded to cook dinner for us (we were the only guests, it being mid week and November) and this was the highlight of our week in the Alentejo. It was by far the best meal of the week, in the best setting, the best value and with the best company.
Breakfast was spectacular. We chose to eat out of doors and the service, choice of food and its presentation could not have been bettered. They even managed to play a Miles Davis CD over breakfast for one of us.
We cannot recommend the Tres Marias more highly.

This hotel is certainly off the beaten track - it's 3km from the nearest paved road and surrounded by sandy fields. Swiss Balthasar Trueb (Balt) started this establishment as an ostrich farm (there's only one left and it's not on the menu), diversified into international animal transport for wildlife parks and then turned his hand to the hotel trade. He's been remarkably successful. The hotel is modern and minimal yet has a homely almost cozy feel. Rooms are split level with the bedrooms and bathrooms on a mezzanine above a comfortable lounge. There are comfortable sitting areas wherever you go and acres of tall windows giving great views over to the mountains at the edge of the plain. The set dinner, advertised as three courses, proved to be a succession of wonderful dishes accompanied by a succession of great local wines (included) - Balt believes in giving guests a panoramic view of the wines of the Alentejo region - we tasted at least five at each meal. Breakfast is a truly gargantuan buffet - fresh fruit, cooked meats, cheeses, eggs, hot pastries, etc. - all of the highest quality. A particularly nice touch is the offer of a complimentary drink on arrival - we arrived by bicycle so cold beers and wine were doubly welcome. Friendly and unobtrusive staff make this a five star experience without a trace of formality or pomposity. If you're lucky Balt will offer to take you outside to show you his telescope - he's an amateur astronomer so you will really see Jupiter and Mars - without a trace of light pollution!

"If you want to be quiet and a little away from the main building where breakfast is served, ask for Room 1 or 2. These are small but very lovely rooms with views over the hills - in a sort of annexe. The rooms near the breakfast area (I think rooms 5 - 8) are larger."Read full review
"Some rooms are in the main building, others in an outbuilding a couple of minutes walk away. If planning to stay for more than a day or so you are likely to need a car as there is nothing within easy walking distance."Read full review
