We booked 3 nights at Awaroa Lodge with precisely that in mind to end our 5 weeks in New Zealand.

We booked the Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle from Kaiteriteri to get us there. Before arrival, the Lodge contacted us by email to suggest we considered travelling with a small bag, but as international travellers away for so long we only had our two big suitcases. It wasn’t a problem. They met us on the beach with a trailer and took the bags up to our room. We just meandered along the sand in the sunshine.

We had booked a Superior Suite months in advance and got room 21 with views over the wetland from two sides. It has a balcony, but the weather turned so wet we didn’t use that much! The room was spacious, clean and had a great walk-in shower.

There’s a laundry on site... $4 for a wash and $4 for a dry. It takes $2 coins, but change is available from reception. I had my own powder, but I am pretty sure you can get powder from reception too.

We ate in the cafe/restaurant for breakfast and dinner and the meals were good. As we were doing so little, we skipped lunch and just had a scone from the bar in the early afternoon.

We did do a couple of walks. One round the wetland and another round the sandy point as the tide was very low. We also did quite a bit of lounging, reading and armchair birding. The fantails and silvereye were very busy and a welcome swallow was building a nest (bit late in the season?) There are plenty of weka on site; mostly scrounging from the pizza bar.

There is wifi, but you are in the middle of nowhere so don’t expect it to be fast. I am going into the detail because others may be concerned not because it was any sort of issue for us.

We were given a voucher each which enabled connection of 2 devices concurrently each for up to 500Mb. This doesn’t go far over three days though we stretched it out by not using our devices much, which wasn’t a struggle, and by switching off wifi on our devices when we weren’t using it so the devices weren’t using precious bytes searching for background updates, etc.

We did pay for extra wifi and $13 for 20Mb for 3 days was far more than we needed, but it did allow us to run two devices concurrently so we both shared the same login from that point onwards.

On departure day we got the 11 am shuttle back to Kaiteriteri. Our bags were taken from outside our room and were already on board the boat when it pulled into the beach (confused us at first!)

The staff were really friendly and we will certainly return if we can get another trip to New Zealand together! It was exactly the relaxing stay we needed to recharge our batteries before resuming our travels.

We were so looking forward to our stay at Awaroa Lodge, the arrival by water taxi was great and the beach is truly breathtaking. The lodge and rooms are looking tired and in need of refurbishment and the general areas look in need of a deep clean. The staff were warm and welcoming, Nate on reception was great but the staff lacked direction and service at times was haphazard. The breakfasts were good but we were disappointed in the evening meal with the slow cooked lamb tasting burnt. This was pointed out to the waitress who didn't know how to handle the complaint and just advised that she would tell the chef. On our second night we chose to eat at the pizzeria which was very good. The lodge is in a spectacular setting and with better management and a few tweaks good be so much better. This is not a cheap property to stay in but does not feel like a luxury lodge as it is trying to be all things to all people with glamping and day trips. I would say good in parts but needs better management and refurbishment.

Hi JimandJulie Thank you for the review. Indeed you are correct in stating that we are not a luxury lodge and certainly we do not market or price ourselves as such. We are though a remote lodge in the middle of a national park that is not accessible by road. So this does bring a certain special something a lodge at the offering of a 4 star level, which we are currently graded at. It is certainly regrettable to hear of flaws in the service and with any gaps in the general maintenance of the property. I am sorry to read that this was your impression on your recent visit. I hope you get a chance to return some time and that we make a better impression on you at that time. Just a note also that we do not do the Glamping or the day trips. These are external business' in the bay that we are lucky enough to sometime work along side.

Arrive by taking a two hour ferry ride, your luggage is whisked away and brought up to lodge. While the luggage gets a ride you walk along the beach and up thru the trees for about twenty minutes to arrive at the lodge. Rooms large and comfortable with small patio outside. Dinner menu is pretty extensive considering the remote location with good food. Portions for breakfast were ridiculously large(and delicious). Beautiful walks along the coast and beach are easily accessible. Warm and welcoming staff. Also went kayaking there which we highly recommend. Great instruction and equipment, about a three hour ride with a stop to stretch and have a quick snack. . We were able to get the kayaking in prior to catching the ferry back which was a great way to end our stay at the lodge.

As much as this is a remote lodge it really didn’t deliver considering the $400 plus per night price tag. Our room was small, the shower area stained and no real space to hang anything to air or dry, also nowhere to sit inside other than on the bed. The room did of course have a hot shower which after 3 days of walking was appreciated and also tea and coffee making facilities.
Arriving in the rain we were not told about the drying facilities in the “generator room” until a waitress mentioned it a dinner. The reception area was nice and comfortable and the wood burning fire a bonus. The restaurant was great for lunch and drinks but left wanting for dinner. Although on the coast, no view and a 300 metre walk to the beach. The sky path and the wetland walk both uninspiring. If we do the walk again we will stop for lunch and a beer then walk to the DOC hut to sleep.

The trip down to Awaroa Lodge on Sea Shuttle from Kaiteriteri was fantastic and the destination was to Awaroa Lodge for lunch as a birthday treat. I had never been before. The cafe was poor on presentation of outdoor environment, tired and lacked appeal. The food was very mediocre with the burger being less than we prepare at home. Coffee was served way too hot & clearly an untrained barista. The setting is truly beautiful & it was great that insect repellent was provided. I truly hope they lift the game there as there is great potential- the wait staff were average.

We were lucky enough to find a room available at the lodge on Christmas Day after 3 days walking the trail and needing some respite from DOC mattresses. Our standard room was perfect. Beautifully fitted out, very clean, large comfortable king bed, private with a lovely balcony looking out over lush gardens. Walk-in shower was a treat. No problem with mosquitos as there were screens on the doors.

We had pizza (and bubbles/beer) at the pizzaria the day before (delicious and friendly staff) and Christmas night buffet, which was amazing. The chef is very talented. The veges are mostly grown on site and you can taste the difference. We also had a delicious full breakfast included in the room rate.

A short walk to the beach and it was warm and crystal clear, just like a tropical island. We walking down to a lagoon at the end of the spit for a high tide dip, and walked back through the new public reserve which has remnants of the old huts. Very interesting.

We’d definitely recommend this lodge. A little bit of luxury amongst NZ’s most beautiful scenery. Boat access is regular and easy for bag drops or returning to Marahau. Staff were all so welcoming, professional and helpful.

We were a family group who decided to have a treat in the lodge before our 3 day tramp. We had a room to sleep 6 and at $600.00 a night it was disappointing. We could understand some sand on the floor but it needed a good sweep before we unpacked and cobwebs removed. The bathroom has very slippery tiles which were unsafe after a shower. The air conditioner definitely needed to be serviced as damp air came out!!!We enjoyed the walks and the gorgeous beach but the room was not what we expected for the rate paid. Food was good and staff were helpful.

We stayed here as part of our Abel Tasman Walk - food is very expensive, beds comfy and bathroom a bit cold. We loved the seclusion and the staff were very accommodating. We were at the end of the season so the pizza bar was closed which would have been lovely.

Awaroa lodge is just a 5/10 minute walk from the beach. Hidde in a lush court yard tucked underneath some big trees.
We booker one night in a standard lodge very spacious, nice vibe, big shower and comfy bed. I think they could do without the plastic little shampoos etc.
Makes it more eco friendly and a broom would be a plus.

We noticed all the smashed mosquitoes on the wall (it's an all white wall/ceiling) and in the night time you'll notice them in the flesh.
We killed at least 25 that night and when we opened the curtains we saw 40ish trapped between the fly screen and window 😩.
They need to fix that.

Food is absolutely delish except for the prawn hotpot (was a good try thou) and the over cooked omelette (as a chef I notice these things)

Staff very helpful and friendly.
Keep up the good work.

8/10

Hi travelconfidentials Thank you for leaving your review. Our toiletries are from the Marihi range. Marihi run a program which they tittle the Weka program (apt given the number of Weka's we have running around Awaroa). Through this program we are able to re-purpose the empty bottles. They are returned and transformed into furniture and building materials. After considerable research this was the best possible system we could find for these items and it is a program we are proud to be a part of. The actual end result is significantly more environmentally positive than both the larger refill bottle systems and the commercially biodegradable packaging which are available as alternatives. Sorry to hear of the issues with mosquitoes. Our wetland is a haven for breeding mosquitoes and they make a quick entry into any available gaps. The weather this season has made for a very bad bug season unfortunately. In other news, our new lunch menu came out Saturday and the hot pot did not make the cut. We appreciate the considered feedback and hope we will see you back here again one day.

This is a place I have visited and stayed in at various times over the past 20 years, but the first time in the last 10. There was no obvious upgrade of facilities since my last visit.; but there was a significant change in the tariff, even allowing for the time period.
The room we booked was the cheapest ("Standard") at $409. For the price it was pretty abysmal. Very basic with an en suite that was tired and a dangerously slippery, concrete floor. The room itself badly needed some form of floor covering to accommodate the sand that naturally infiltrates.
The restaurant was very pleasant and the food good although at lunch times it was a bit chaotic as large numbers of walkers drop in. Service was generally good.
It is in a wonderful location, but at $400 - $600+ a night, it needs to ensure it provides that level of accommodation.

Kia Ora, unfortunately we don't have either Kayaks or Paddleboards available for hire due to our location in the National Park, close to the Marine Reserve. The only option for Kayaking would be a guided trip which we can pre-arrange for you. Best regards, Max Oehler General Manager

Hi there, this is indeed possible and a great way to spend the morning. Awaroa Sea Kayaks are based on site at the Awaroa Lodge and offer half day guided sea kayak trips and stand up paddle board rentals. Beats watching the tide go out! Kind regards Josh Smaill - Awaroa Sea Kayaks, owner/operator
