Detailed Reviews
This is our second holiday to Luz Portugal and this time we decided to book at Porto Dona Maria. We were put in property 301 which is a lovely house with stunning views over the sea. \the house was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. It has 3 very spacious rooms with one being en-suite. It has a balcony table, chairs and sun loungers. The complex is very attractive with a fantastic swimming pool.
Luz itself is so beautiful with a really friendly atmosphere and a soper beach with many bars, restaurants and shops.
Everone speaks very good english so we had no problems with communication.
All in all we had a very relaxing holiday and a very enjoyable time at 301 Porto Dona Maria.

When our travel agent offered this place I read the reviews and I was a little worried. How could there be such a disparity between opinions. There will always be some bad reviews no matter how good a property is. That's to be expected as some will have a one off bad experience that will taint their visit. However this place seemed to provoke both ends of the spectrum so perhaps I can help shed some light with this review.
There are two main reasons for this I feel. Firstly, the "resort" (not golf resort unless you count one hole and a bit of a driving range!) is set on a large piece of land set into a hill. It provides two types of property, individual self contained villas with their own pools; and a series of apartment/townhouses set around a shared pool complex.
The check in area is on the top of the hill (near the restaurant and small shop (which is closed and awaiting stock when we visited (peak season!)). There are villas near this and in the winding (private to the resort) streets running down the hill. At the foot of the hill and on the cliff front/top is the apartment complex. We stayed in one of these apartments.
As it's on a hill there are three levels of apartments, level 100: are on the cliff top nearest the sea and offer great uninterrupted views over the Luz bay and the Atlantic.
Level 200 is where the pool is and apartments on this level get the view of that AND the sea (perfect combination). Their view of the sea isn't blocked by the 100 level as the height of the pool is level with the roofs of the 100 buildings.
Level 300 is up the hill again and offer views of the sea (perhaps part of the pool (in the lower apartment numbers <=308)).
In addition to the apartments there are some bigger town houses set to the right of the apartments (as you face the sea). These are on a steeper part of the hill and will all have sea views and some with both.
The second reason I feel there is such a disparity of opinion relates to the ownership. Whilst Belver own the resort, many of the individual apartments and villas appear to be privately owned and rented out. As a result there isn't a consistency of decoration/furniture/equipment.
Having said all of the above let me give you my experience of apartment 308.
I loved the location of the resort. Spectacular views over the bay and the Atlantic. Very nice walks along the cliff tops and if you were up for it you can walk to the beaches at Luz and Burgau (30/40 mins respectively perhaps less with the right short cuts). As you've probably guessed by this and other reviews a car is almost an essential and with it this place becomes an ideal location for a quiet holiday (if you aren't bothered by lack of direct beach). There are so many restaurants in Luz (the busier of the two) and Burgau (the more pretty location). Without a car this place would be a nightmare, no shops close by and very limited eating options. Even in the peak season, the airport is only an hour away.
We had no difficulty parking the car reasonably close to the apartment. There are a few stairs but slopes are there if necessary. We didn't experience much noise at night, in fact it was very quiet for the most part. There was noise around the pool when groups of children were playing. However in peak season you can't really expect that not to happen.
The pool is very nice size/shape although it was cold when getting in. Once over the initial shock it wan't too bad. This is peak summer so I suspect it would need to be heated at other times and expect it isn't.
There need to be more sunbeds available and those that are there are not in the best condition. There is some shade around the pool provided by a covering of bamboo mats on top of a trellis (which were replaced whilst we were there, but god only knows why you would do that work in peak season!).
We never had an issue getting sunbeds or shade (which is partial due to what's let in between the bamboo) however we were either by the pool from around 10 or late afternoon. We didn't see much towel reservation going on and although guests are warned that the resort remove I saw no staff around the pool or monitoring. No pool towels are provided and they are OK with you taking the towels from the room, these aren't really suitable and you then have the issue of wanting dry towels in the room for showers later.
One of the factors that drove us to consider the resort was the accommodation configuration. With two kids in tow we wanted a separate bedroom for us. This place was ideal. As it's set on a hill you enter to a mezzanine level (with toilet) then go up to the lounge and Kitchen. These were large areas with all you needed for relaxed stay. Kitchen had microwave and dishwasher but no kettle, so we were left to heat water in a pan on the oven for tea/coffee. The lounge Opens out to a balcony with great views. TV was old small CRT type and had lots of channels but one English one (which seemed to be swapped out depending on time of day). I managed to tune a further 8 extra ones (92-99 if you go there :-) ) inc CNN, BBC, ITV, Film4.
Going down from the entrance via spiral stone staircase into lower floor (which looking out is level with entrances to 200 apartments). Two bedrooms (both had twin beds), both with ensuite, one with shower the other bath. Both had shower hoses but neither had a hook on the wall to attach it to which would be such an easy and cheap addition and would make all the difference.
The bedrooms and bathrooms were reasonably sized but could do with the addition of a chest of drawers in each as wardrobe space for folded or loose items was very limited. The beds were comfy however the pillows were lumpy.
Upon arrival there was a basket of tea/coffee/milk/jam and fruit bowl together with a fresh loaf of bread (a loaf is delivered daily (except Sundays and bank holidays)
Room cleaning was really just bin emptying (every day except Sunday). Towels were changed every other day, however they aren't hung up just placed in the room.
cleaning cursory (emptied bins really)
The proposed hotel on the hill next to the pool complex is nowhere to be seen other than on the map given to locate the right apartment. I expect this idea may never happen or if it does it'll be years away.
Next door was renovating their apartment but they didn't start too early nor go on too late. For the most part this wouldn't have been an issue however my wife had an accident and ended up resting in the room for three days.
The resort really needs to add some sort of wi-fi capability in the apartment/pool area. Ideal if you want to get away from it all as phone signal is a little patchy too.

The resort is located on a cliff with stunning views over the sea. It has 1 (or 2 floor) houses organized in rows, depending on the room you are placed on you may have different views: direct sea view only (the 100s rooms), sea & swimming pool (all other rooms).
The place is very quiet, the pool is huge and rooms are big and spacious. It is a good place for families with kids but also for a quiet and relaxing holiday. If you are into nightlife or shopping you must have a car to go to Praia da Luz or Lagos.
On the downside the furniture and room equipments could use more maintenance. The cleaning service is clearly under-staffed and is getting worse from year to year, I am a regular customer since 2004 and the service is no way near the service I had in the first years.

We stayed for one night in a duplex sea view house as part of a holiday that was organised for us. The accommodation was beyond dated, and looked uncared for. There were mops and buckets left in front of many rooms and uncovered electric boxes. It just looked tired and like nobody cared, and didn't make you feel secure and safe. We had a sea view from the upper level of the house, but only stayed one night so didn't use the terrace. I mistook the blanket on the sofa in the lounge for pool towels, and saw that it was covered in stains when I opened it up. Yuk. The decor in the bedroom downstairs was very out of date and depressing, with dated furniture and faded prints on the walls. It reminded us of a convent. The twin beds were very hard and the pillows were very lumpy. It was not a room you wanted to spend any extra time than necessary in. The pool was large, but cold. There was zero atmosphere at the pool bar, nor anywhere in the resort. No evidence of a functioning golf course, or any golfers. In fact, apart from 2 other couples, we appeared to be the only ones staying there. Breakfast was better than expected (expectations were low) but the restaurant were it was served looked tired and half closed. The wifi was non-existent. It is a 30 minute walk into town from Porto Donna Maria and after getting a lift from the hotel staff, we were not able to get a taxi for love nor money, so ended up walking home in the dark. Would not recommend to anybody!

Terrible experience - on arrival, we discovered the villa (which had a for sale sign on the front gate) has a large smashed double-glazed unit, filthy private pool, soiled sofas, exposed electrical wiring, large areas of cracked render, peeling exterior paint everywhere, litter in the pool, litter on the sun terrace, broken pool loungers, ripped pool liner, broken pool light cowlings, broken outside lights. I didn't let anyone swim in the pool as it was cloudy and filthy and immediately complained to the resort manager, who said the previous guests had caused the damage. So in essence they knew about the problems but just let us find out for ourselves. I demanded to be moved but was told there was no other accommodation. Their maintenance man put some electrical tape over the cracked window on one side (which promptly fell off) and then tried to revive the pool pump - the pool pictures show the pool after he cleaned it... I have complained for three months to the resort manager (and their head office) and was eventually offered a partial refund, but now, over a month later, they have not refunded the money as agreed and are ignoring my emails and telephone calls. Congratulations on spoiling my kid's and grandchildren's only holiday in 2024 - I hope other families read this before experiencing what we went through

I hadn't realised there was a hotel here. We never saw it. We stayed in a 1 bedroom bungalow with sea view. The sea you could just see between the large pine trees.
We entered the bungalow on arrival and there was a very distinctive smell of damp. No kettle or hairdryer and we did eventually get these items neither worked. It was dirty and we were told they would give it a deep clean. The room hasn't seen a deep clean for a long time. It was dark and dingy and antiquated.
The oven didn't work and we never even used the hob.
In the bathroom the towel rail was rusty and the plugs and taps were very dirty.
The top of the fridge was dirty and just everything about the place was horrible. The bedroom curtains were all stained and when you went to bed because of the damp the bedding was damp. When we got home we opened our suitcases and our clothes smelt of damp. The TV was only one station and wifi didn't work as it was like a dungeon. Our neighbours had also complained about the damp.

I have stayed at this resort three times now and each time I have been very satisfied, hence my return visits. As there were six of us (3 couples) we have stayed in a three bedroom townhouse, which provides ample room for us. We choose 301 because of its location. The uninterrupted view of the Atlantic Ocean is spectacular by day and by night when we saw the lights of fishing boats out at sea and the moonlight. The house is comfortable, well furnished and well equipped. There is a DVD player and satellite television to keep up with the news. Central heating is installed which was a bonus for the chilly January evenings.
The 24 hour reception meant that we could arrive at anytime. The staff speak English and are very pleasant and helpful.
The saltwater swimming pool is enormous and has a childs section. Plenty of sunloungers and a snack bar adjacent to the pool.
It is not a lively resort, but not all of us want discos and bars. Built on a clifftop and close to parkland, it has a charm and atmosphere that I personally found very relaxing and peaceful. There is a path that runs along this stretch of coastline which is lovely for a walk to admire the sea views and see the wild flowers along the way.
Lots of restaurants in the area, as well as one on the resort. However, it wasn't open in January, probably because it was a very quiet time of the year for the whole area.
Several large, well known golf courses a short drive away. Luz with its sandy beach is just up the road. Lagos and all its amenities about ten minutes drive away. Two of my friend enjoyed fishing on the rock shoreline a few minutes walk from the house. Faro airport is about an hours drive away from Porto Dona Maria. Really you do need a car to get around, unless you just want to stay on the resort.
I will go to this resort again later in the year and would certainly reccommend it, if you want to get away from the maddenning crowds!

We just returned from a two week stay at Porto Dona Maria resort and loved it. Our apartment overlooked the ocean. Bed was comfortable, and we loved having fresh bread delivered to our door each day! Besides the terrific view, we were able to walk to two towns, Luz and Bergau on ocean-side paths. The pool was lovely and at that time of year, virtually deserted. We particularily enjoyed the fish restaurant on the premises. Serafina in the reception area was very helpful and gave us good suggestions on places to visit. I would recommend this resort to anyone who desires a little more privacy. Sheila, Ontario CAN.

+1
My husband & I visited Porto Donna Maria last week. We had booked for 2 weeks but came home after 8 days, neither of us could bear to stay any longer. It is awful, advertised as a 4 star gulf resort, it is so bad, that in my opinion, should warrent 1 star only, That Bad!!!
The resort is isolated out on the cliffs, overlooking Luz, A dry dusty dirty place, surrounded by weeds, & unkempt grounds, even the roads leading to the resort, are narrow & unfinished. There is a general feeling of the whole area of neglect & dismay.
Our apartment was 1 bed, self catering. The furnishings within are tired, dated, stained, dirty & smelly. There appeared to be an infestation of small insects. The kitchen was quite good, but the electrics appear to be hazardous & when are electric kettle blew up!! , management were unable to replace which meant that in order to have coffee/ tea, my husband & I had to boil a saucepan of water on the cooker!!! Really!!
The standards of cleanliness is very poor, my husband & I really worked hard, to clean the place, as we tried to keep the insects under some control. We scanned our bed before we got in, but had creepy crawlers in bed with us each morning, on the towels when we tried to dry ourselves, walking on us when we were seated in living area, Nightmare!!! There was no aircom in the apartment, despite temperatures greater than 40 degrees. We survived as long as we did by trying to stay out, although, it was hard.
The amenities outside were not better. The pool was nice but was streets away from us. It took us 2 days to find it. We never ventured into the restaurant, because the menu in the window was filthy & crawling with insects, and we never ever saw any single person eating there. There was a shop??? It consisted of an old dresser with 2 or 3 items for sale. There was a sign advertising ice-cream, but as 3 despondent children told my husband, there was no ice- cream!!! The bar was unbelievable, 3 stools against an old bar, nil else. No entertainment at all. Around reception, there was buckets, mops etc just lying about. The lighting ouside & around reception was broken and lying on the ground.
The staff at reception were not helpful, the uncaring attitude seeming to run through all the staff
This really was the nightmare holiday from hell, and I could not express enough how poor this resort is. Do no book this place for your holiday

Location - Above average
Staff - Okay, but some problems
Cleaning - Okay but some problems
Quietness - Okay, but some problems
Apartment accecibilities - Okay, but some problems (had to carry heavy luggage a long distance to the apartment, too many stairs inside the apartment - not proper for with locomotion disabilities).
Too many okays for a place advertised as a luxury resort...
