I stayed here with my husband for one night in September en route from Cork to Dublin. From the minute you pull up you feel as though you are a guest in a dear friend’s stately home, not in a hotel. Although we only stayed one night we were able to pack a lot in. Here are some of

Can you go for a walk on grounds of ballyfin if you are not staying?
Ballyfin is not accessible unless you have a dinner reservation or if you are staying. In other words you can't just drive in & enter as you would a regular hotel. You are buzzed in at the main gate. If you are having dinner there you are permitted to arrive from I think 5.30 ( might be wrong about that time) and then you could have a walk around the house/gardens etc. Hope that helps. :)

Does anyone know how far in advance I would need to book? I'm planning a trip to Ireland and want to include a stay here. It sound wonderful!
Suppose it depends when you are going. The further ahead the better. It is amazing and worth the effort. We would skip Dublin on our next trip to spend more time there.

Has anyone taken the train from Dublin to Portlaoise and then a taxi to Ballyfin Demesne?
Hi, I haven't done it myself but I am from the vicinity. The train from Dublin takes approx 1 hour. You can book your train seats in advance via Iarnoid Eireann. The taxi drive from Portlaoise station takes a maximum of 15 minutes. I'm sure if you call Ballyfin in advance and let them know what time your train arrives that they will gladly send a car for you. Enjoy your stay there, I hear it's out of this world. Hope this helps!

Wouldn't it be lovely if the aviary were used to house birds that can no longer be free due to past injury. I rehabilitate wildlife here in the States and sometimes an owl or songbird has such a badly injured wing, etc. it can't fend for itself in the wild, but can live quite nicely in captivity. Seems a nice fit since Ballyfin pays such care to wildlife and has a particular interest in falconry.
That is a lovely idea. as of Oct 2018, the aviary is not restored - the interior seems to hold a variety of construction debris. However, the owner has begun restoration on other outbuildings, so it is possible that this one may eventually be restored. Suggest contacting the manager with your thoughts - they seem open to ideas.
