#1 of 5 hotels in Nerul
2020 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Tucked away near the calm and quiet fishing village of Nerul, at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Mandovi and Nerul rivers, Ahilya by the Sea has a uniquely beautiful setting on Dolphin (Aguada) Bay, with waves from the Arabian Sea tumbling onto our sea wall. It is situated just to the east of Coco Beach across from Panjim, with waves from the Indian Ocean tumbling onto the sea wall that separates the hotel from the sea. Ahilya by the Sea is one of Goa's few properties directly on the ocean.

As soon as we entered the property, we were awed by how magnificent the view was. Everywhere we looked, we saw an extremely well-maintained place and you could see the efforts that was put in making it so pretty all the time. Pictures don’t do any justice to how scenic the property is. One must visit this place to experience the magic of the location it is set in! We arrived a little confused as to where the property actually is because there are no huge signs telling us which gate to enter from. We even passed the place without realising that we had crossed it. It would’ve been helpful if somebody would’ve let us know before we arrived about the gates and the entrance. We did receive a message from Denzil about the ongoing taxi strike but we didn’t hear much from them before we arrived. We were already in the city so we didn’t remember to fill the form they had sent us so maybe they weren’t prepared because they didn’t know. We later checked that they had sent an email a day before check-in but due to the lack of reception we couldn’t respond or read to it then. We would’ve appreciated a call but I don’t think it was a fault at their end. Denzil showed us around the property and gave us his number, and it has to be mentioned that he was very prompt and helpful with accommodating our requests. It was delightful having him tell us a little more about the place. Anjana (I hope I got the name right) who served us breakfast/lunch most of the time was so wonderful! One morning while we were having lunch, it got a little hot. When she saw that we were getting uncomfortable, she quickly set up the fan near us. She was really great and people like her are the reason the experience becomes so much more marvellous. Smitha gave us good suggestions about places to go to and it was fun talking to her. Overall, the service was prompt and no complaints there. But there were little things that could’ve made it better. There was an event that was being hosted at the resort, which we participated in too, but it took away a bit of privacy that Ahilya by the Sea promises. It wouldn’t have been an issue if it were just for a night or two, but it was there for our entire stay so it made it difficult to enjoy the dip pool or the sunset from the villa where our room was. Also, it was a little confusing as to which living area was a private area and which was open to all. It was a little embarrassing to be mildly scolded by the team for entering a living area that was private. The doors are open everywhere and we weren’t told properly as to which area was accessible and which wasn’t beforehand. Although the food was amazing and we did have quite a lot of meals here, I think the portion size was too little. They do get you more rice/bread if you ask but even while being served the portion seems small. Breakfast portion was small too. You could order more, there’s no restriction, but I think the first serving should be fulfilling. The drinks were great too, just took a little while to make it. I liked their coconut drink, it was yummy. The thing that Ahilya by the Sea lacked according to me and our experience was the warmth and the personal touch that we thought we would get here. For us it was a little disconnected and we didn’t feel as special as we thought we would feel, after going through all the reviews and reading their emails about this being an experience. We weren’t asked for any feedback or we weren’t told about any way to leave some tip for the team. It was an abrupt goodbye, like our opinion didn’t matter much; like we weren’t important enough. Maybe we just got unlucky this time around. We were expecting more. We went there believing we would love to return but after checking out we didn’t know if we would. A gorgeous place, nonetheless, worth a visit!

We just returned from a short stay, and loved every moment of it. The location is stunning, the food is delectable and the staff will go above and beyond to help you with every request. The chefs will make you dishes that aren't on the menu. We ordered crabs two days in a row!

Ahilya has probably spoilt us for any other choice of resort in Goa. The location right next to the waves, the quirky architecture, the understated - yet gorgeous rooms filled with absolute treasures, the communal living rooms with artefacts from across the globe, the sunset from the infinity pool, the cute plunge pool, the glorious flowers and greenery, the playful dolphins putting up a show in the morning while you are at breakfast !!, the lights at night giving the property a dreamy ambience - everything builds up to a perfect experience. The food complements this , and is top notch; the dining areas are varied and everyone of them with gorgeous views .. The icing on top of this delectable cake is the wonderful people who work here- who are discreet, never hover , leave you with a feeling of seclusion, but seem to totally magically appear when you want absolutely anything ... it honestly impressed us immensely.. The beach could be cleaner but we didn’t bother much with it , being content to just see the fishing boats bob in the waves and go about their business.. If you are not looking for a cookie cutter 5 star resort but want the feeling of understated calming luxury, you just cannot go wrong with this choice. I have recommended this to all our friends! Smita runs a brilliant ship. Kudos to all! We will definitely be back.

Ahilya by the Sea is beautiful. The waves come up to the walls of the property. I even saw a dolphin emerge from the water for one delightful moment before it dived back in. That has got to be one of my best memories from the trip. There are frothy flowers on the trees at Ahilya. The gardens are so interesting, with stone toads peeping at you from the most unlikely places and a fascinating selection of plants. The staff is excellent. They are efficient and pleasant. They made many of our experiences there so memorable because of how gentle and considerate they were. There was an instance when we were sitting down to breakfast outside and the sun was coming in our eyes, so we were shading our faces with our hands and talking. A staff member came up to us and asked us if we wanted a sun umbrella. It was just little things like that. The food is so flavourful. A special thank you to the chef for veganizing the food for me. The vegetable biryani, coconut raita and besan sheera were special stand outs. While we loved everything else about the place, the manager- female, middle aged, with short hair whose name I don't know- was incredibly hostile. She was arrogant and quite odious, to be honest. We are regular people and don't really do anything to illicit this kind of behaviour. There was no one incident that triggered this. Right from the beginning, all the encounters we had with her were unpleasant. We were there for 6 days and a few days into the trip, after encountering this uncalled for behaviour more often than I was ready to put up with it, I was put off for good.
