We had an amazing time at Whitegrass on Tanna Island. We didn’t wear shoes for a week / Beautiful gardens and grass is so lush and soft!! Fresh fish, ocean front restaurant (we saw whales 2 nights in a row!), clean and comfy rooms and the staff are a delight! We went to blue cave, mt Yasur (spelling?) volcano and they are life changing. The rest of the time we sunk into books by the pool :-) A memorable family holiday, thank you ! PS Thank you Lyndal for my sons birthday cake too - a lovely surprise :-)

The good: - Beautiful location on the coast - Very convenient to the airport and pickup was arranged - Food was very good, with a daily menu of fresh fish and meat dishes The okay: - Rooms were not particularly clean. Blood on several of the pillows and most of the towels were stained. - Large cockroach found in bathroom and hornet nest above the porch. Appreciate the fact that keeping all insects out of the rooms is very difficult in Vanuatu, but compared to other hotels on the island this was not the cleanest. The bad: - Staff were unbelievably rude, to the point where every order at the bar/ booking at reception felt like you were greatly inconveniencing them - The price: arguably the worst value for money hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The tours are extremely expensive and we were quoted an hour’s round trip to the Banyan tree at 13,500 Vt (~$250). We ended up finding a local driver who took us for 4,000 Vt in a comparable vehicle. I understand that the hotel needs to make a margin on all of the tours it arranges, but it felt like this was a money grabbing operation. - We booked with Agoda so the rooms were all prepaid. At check out the receptionist asked me to pay for the room - I told her that we had prepaid already and she disappeared into the back office. Five minutes later she returned with four declined attempts to charge the card I had left on file on when I arrived. It took at least ten minutes of arguing with her until she finally agreed to look at the confirmation email that proved I had already paid. Fortunately they do not accept Amex otherwise she would have charged my card for the rooms without my permission. Verdict: It really is a shame because this hotel has great potential but the staff could not be more uninterested in the guests and the rooms are not particularly clean. If you are going to stay here then make sure to book your tours with third party companies rather than going through the hotel otherwise you may need to remortgage at check out.

Hello. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed the beautiful coastal location and restaurant cuisine. I have gone through our recent guest list and I cannot find a record of your stay that I can identify from your Trip Advisor name. Staff did not bring to our attention any guest feedback about the rooms. We have a Rooms Supervisor who quality controls all rooms before guest check in with a detailed checklist. We have two commercial washing machines and towels and sheets always meet/exceed industry standards. Our staff consistently receive wonderful feedback for their warm nature, so your comments are out of character for our staff. If you could provide further information (you can email us directly) we can help ascertain the dates and staff on duty. We have had a significant cultural event on Tanna over the last month, with the passing of our Paramount Chief. This significantly impacted our staffing, as many of our team observed a period of mourning. We are training a number of new reception staff. Your comments regarding your issue with pre-payment has been highlighted with our team. Our General Manager was delayed offsite for a number of days due to weather events and flight cancellations. This may have coincided with his leave. We strive to work with local tour operators who are insured, informed and reputable. Following the COVID international border closures, the return of local operators has been delayed. We would be happy discuss your comments further over email.

An excellent resort with various bungalows in various price ranges. The location of this resort is quietly located on the beautiful coastline of the island of Tanna. Not only are the bungalows well equipped, the restaurant with a view of the ocean is also excellent. A must if you're in the area that you won't be disappointed with.

Budget 1 star hotel at best. Dinner options are basic and limited - had no other option but to get the steak. 3800vt for the most over cooked, tasteless food. The most expensive food we ate anywhere in Vanuatu and hands down the worst. “Free breakfast” is fruit, bread or pastries. Anything extra costs money. Budget resort next door includes a free cooked breakfast. Rooms have no aircon, bed was extremely uncomfortable, shower had previous guests hair in it and the toilet wasn’t even flushed from the previous guest. Thanks. Wish we had kept our booking with the budget hotel next door instead of “upgrading” to this one. Other members of the tour stayed at the hotel next door and said it was much better, comfy beds, free cooked breakfast. Clean rooms. Tasty, good selection and well priced dinners. You will find none of the above at Whitegrass.

These are upgraded open-air beach bungalows that come with a high-end price tag. Not worth it from our experience. Service was unfriendly and cold. Grounds were lovely. Tours are overpriced and lack safety or any tour component. It’s a transport only situation. One of the pricier places we stayed on the trip but with mediocre quality.

One of the nicest places we have ever stayed with beautifully appointed bungalow with two spacious bedrooms and two spacious bathrooms for the 4 of us and a living area with sofa, dining table and kitchenette with sink, fridge and kettle. A balcony which was the whole length of the bungalow was just fabulous with glimpses of the ocean, and a big green field behind to kick a soccer ball. Everything was clean and well maintained. The grounds were well kept and lush with flowers and foliage. Restaurant was situated in a magical spot and Happy Hour cocktails 5-6pm everyday were a welcome treat. Dinner meals were pricey but of good quality - we didn't have an outstanding dish though tried the lobster and steak which other travellers had raved about. Breakfast was decent (white bread, pancakes, fruit, cereal), but as you accept in a remote location, there is not much choice, though this was where we at least got the most fresh fruit during our Vanuatu trip. Slight downside were the bikes were not maintained so we could not use them; no lighter/cheaper choices for lunches; and my son got gastro the last night we were there from the fish with pineapple salsa dish he had. We are pretty certain this was the case as we did not eat anywhere else and heard of other guests getting sick too. We did report this to reception and this did spoil 2 days of our holiday as we all ended up getting gastro. We also did not realise there was a separate vegetarian menu until our last day and had tried to just pick veggie option from the main menu for my daughter. From the hotel we did the trip to the Blue Cave but mostly we just entertained ourselves with snorkelling at the two nearby Blue Holes (1 and 2) and even just in front of the resort off the pier. Lots of great snorkelling. You can bring your own gear or borrow for free from the resort's dive centre. A very special place to stay but we were just unlucky with the gastro incident.

Lovely accommodation and very friendly local staff. Beautiful setting & surrounds. Food here rather expensive for what it is, but we soon learned to explore other nearby options. Unfortunately free activities like kayaking & bicycles not really available due to poor condition of equipment, and snorkelling from the jetty rather dangerous unless you are strong swimmer and we were advised by staff not to go out. Safer to walk to nearby blue holes to snorkel - reef shoes a must as very rocky to walk out! Understandable that recovery from recent cyclones may have contributed to this, but this should be stated on website. Also there is no running track as advertised on website and we couldn't find the holes on the pitch and putt golf course (not many useful golf club anyway & not sure where the golf balls were!). No complimentary tours out to see the turtles either. However, despite this we did enjoy our stay - probably a great place for divers.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at White Grass Resort. All staff were delightful and so friendly. The rooms, gardens and facilities were all clean and well maintained. A big shoutout to Daphne who helped with our booking, Paul who took us to the volcano and was a wealth of information, Philemon who is quite likely the coolest guy on Tanna and got us into Sulphur Bay, Brian the dive instructor who is a deadset champ and very funny indeed, and Chuck who is the nicest, most generous guy ever and invited us to Kava and also Tanna Soup with his family in the village. To everyone who made our trip one to remember forever - thanks so much!! Clint, James, Tarkyn and Mika

Responded 12 July 2023
Hi! Thank you for your kind comments about the staff and rooms. I am puzzled by your comments on the free activities though. We DO have free kayaks, we DO have amazing free snorkeling on the reef and in Blue Holes with free equipment, we DO have a 3-hole golf course and we DO have free bikes of various types. We also have free volleyball, boules and croquet. I agree that we don't have a running track and haven't had for many years so I am unsure where you would have seen this. I also recall speaking with you at some length about the best time and place to go safely snorkeling but as I had just that moment landed on a plane following the birth of my son it is possible that I wasn't as focused as usual and for that I apologize.
