Not sure where to begin Everything about this resort was wonderful. Rooms, food, drinks, pool, landscape and staff were outstanding The resort is laid back and casual which makes for socializing with the staff and other guests easy
We made some lifelong friends from around the world. Special thanks to Betty and Bibi for awesome cocktails and letting us party till late. Jack, Tim, and all the other boat tour guys. You were incredible thank you. Kava ceremony was educational and interesting and Tim did a great job Snorkeling trip were sure an adventure. The only small complaint....the picnic area for the waterfall hike was on a rocky beach with no table or seating and the food was all laid out in the back of the hot van. The beach was located in a road construction parking area with dusty large trucks moving dirt. NOTE. Bring your own water in a yeti as the only water they had was in 2 small jugs and was lukewarm. My husband and I had to share a glass because there wasn’t enough to go around. Good thing we made awesome friends to share with. Bring bug spray on that hike and wear a rash guard if you plan on doing the natural slide

If you really want a good sense of how wonderful Matangi is, stay at another resort and the comparisons are not even possible. From John at the bar with his great smile and devilish wit to Maddie in the spa, Eric on every snorkel trip, Princess Sera and most important the heart and soul of the group, Sireli who ran the front of the house and was the greatest host and driver of every little detail and special event. Everyone was truly and genuinely glad to see you. Like many of you we have been fortunate to stay at several 5 star resorts and nothing compares to Matangi. The food is awesome and how they get a chef of that caliber to cook these meals for such a small guest population is stunning. Our room #7 was recently refreshed and spotless. This was summer/rainy season and it was muggy hot but the over bed AC was perfect and adjustable. We had a large deck which ended up being the cocktail hour spot for several of the island guests. It rained 3 or 4 times but never during the day. Post afternoon snorkeling found all the guests enjoying the coolness of the pool AND poolside delivered cocktails...the guests just became one big family. The snorkeling was stunning, from brilliant healthy coral to tons of colorful fish and an occasional (and very harmless) reef shark. We spent 7 days at Matangi and settled into a relaxing state of wake, eat, swim, snorkel, swim, eat, swim, snorkel, swim, drink, shower, drink, eat and sleep. Matangi is a touch rustic and very closely connected to the village across the straight, where most of the employees commute from each morning. The owner sits in a chair most mornings with whatever native animal he has recently rescued and your welcome to walk right up and talk about birds or bats or whatever he has rescued. We prefer to adventure to new locations but we made the decision to come back to Matangi for a longer stay the moment our butts hit the seats of the boat taking us back to Taveuni while the staff and remaining guests sang us off the island. I wish I could remember everyone’s names and thanks each of you individually!

We spent a full week at the beautiful Matangi Island Resort, including three nights in an oceanside bure and four nights in a treehouse - both of which were stylish and well designed. The rooms didn't have TV or wifi, but that didn't personally bother us as we'd come prepared with our own entertainment options. We particularly appreciated the regular replenishment of drinking water (this is not always a given at resorts, though it should be!!) and the complimentary laundry service.

The dining was a definite highlight, with a variety of fresh and tasty options offered (including three courses for both lunch and dinner). My favourite dishes included the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, and the Thai beef salad. The fresh bread and butter, and welcome juice shots, were always welcome too!

We weren't diving on this occasion (a popular Matangi activity), but enjoyed a range of other activities. Our favourite was the half day picnic at Horsehoe Bay, complete with a bottle of sparkling wine. Such an idyllic setting! For those after more energetic activities, we'd also recommend the ridge hike, as well as the day trip to Taveuni to visit the Tavoro waterfalls and the natural waterslide. We'd really hoped to do the Lavena Coastal Walk, too, but unfortunately it hasn't yet re-opened. NYE was a very quiet affair, though we did enjoy the trio of local musicians who entertained us over dinner.

Matangi paid close attention to Covid protocols and, from our experience, staff religiously wore masks and sanitised. The dining area is well ventilated and laid out for social distancing.

Thank you to the delightful host Sireli, as well as the many other brilliant Matangi staff, for making our first trip to Fiji's north a memorable one!!

A dry eye is hard to find as you depart Matangi Private Island Resort. (to be fair, the arrival song might be even more tear inspiring) The warmth, kindness, and genuine nature of the Fijians comes through in their voices and will captivate you! Many of the staff remembered us from our visit 10 years ago. The family that owns Matangi, lives on the resort. Nothing is remotely “corporate'' on this pristine volcanic island above or below the surface of the sea. Everyone wants you to feel as at-home as they do. Tree@BeyondBoraBora.com perfectly dialed in our incredible recent trip to Fiji.

Foodies beware! There are mouthwatering choices to be made at every meal.

Pick just one? Absolute torture! Today’s Fresh catch, NZ beef and lamb, Fijian Curry, lobster, etc. etc. The saving grace is the wine list. Let’s face it, a real vintage wine list is rare as whales teeth in most tropical destinations. Not so at Matangi! Their wine list will bring out the enophile in you.

Plenty of home baked choices for starting breakfast on the continental buffet, but read my lips.

“YES! Eggs Benedict today again Please!” The breakfast menu is long and all delicious for those who can inexplicably pass on the lovingly and perfectly poached Benedicts. Did someone say “champagne breakfast in bed”? Just ask. Go back to skipping breakfast when you get home.

Divers! Do you prefer crowded dive sites? Do you like a full dive boat with several dive groups? Two divers left just before me and two more showed up the following week when we left. It was just me and the dive master all week! Bose was attentive and had an incredible ability to find all manner of large and small reef critters, most of which I’d never seen before. Matangi is a “Private Island Resort”. We joked every day about our “private ocean”. We never spotted another dive boat, nor diver all week.

The spa is well appointed and definitely worth your time. Maybe some time every Day! Water people like me simply should not pass on my favorite, what I call the “shower table”. Absolute wet indulgence, followed by the hot stone massage.

A master brewer was asked, “what makes a good beer”? His answer, “one that makes me want another.” Matangi is the one resort I want to revisit again.

This was our third visit to Matangi Private Island Resort and I can honestly say that we still want to go back again. The staff always welcomes guests coming to this beautiful paradise as the boat brings you closer to the island.

Matangi is unique in that you don’t get lost in a crowd of 100-200 guests like other resorts (been there, done that). If you are looking for a place to relax as much as you want or to be active as much as you want, Matangi is that place. Daybeds and lounges around the swimming pool for the times you want to relax or places to hike, snorkel, scuba dive, excursions, etc. for the times you want to be active

The dining was extraordinary. Each meal had multiple options (including vegan) to choose from and were always exceptionally prepared and presented so beautifully.

We got the romance package which included a couples massage. If you don’t do anything else, this is a must. The package also includes a private dinner (we had a great time watching the crabs racing around on the beach from the private dining area) and a morning at Horseshoe Bay (Listed in ‘1,000 Places To See Before You Die)

Last, but certainly not least, this was our 51st anniversary and we decided to have a vow renewal ceremony. The staff took care of everything so we didn’t have to do a thing except show up

A BIG Thank You to Sireli, Serena, Tim, Bibi, Betty, Paulini, Olive, Jon, Mary, Tom, Sotia, and to any others if I forgot your name. You gave us another wonderful experience!

There is no other word for Matangi Private Island Resort than paradise. We stayed the first week of May as a family group of 8 celebrating an 85th birthday and all agreed it was the best family holiday we've ever had. The island is remote (2 planes, a bus and boat ride from Sydney) and so, so beautiful - truly a get away from it all destination. You know from the moment you arrive and are welcomed by the staff singing that you are in for a magical vacation. Everything is relaxed but perfect at the same time. The burés are spacious and comfortable, beautifully decorated and with everything you need but still feel very Fijian and traditional. The food is truly excellent and the twice per day snorkelling trips are amazing. We spent most of our days relaxing and reading at the pool area adjacent to the restaurant but there are sun loungers next to the burès, hammocks at the beach and other places to relax if you want your own space. I loved that you can put your make-up and dress on for dinner then kick your shoes off if you want to. So relaxed and laid back. The day trip to Horseshoe Bay was a real highlight as was a special dinner the staff arranged for us on the terrace of the day spa. It was a beautiful, still evening and I'll remember the golden moon rising over the water while we ate for as long as I live. I had 3 treatments at the day spa (massage, facial and coconut hair treatment) and they were all very good. But like all the reviews say, what really makes Matangi special is the staff. They are the loveliest team I've ever encountered. They all know you by name and go out of their way to make sure you are having a wonderful vacation, teach you a bit of Fijian, have a smile and a laugh with you. It's a very well run team. Nothing and I mean nothing was ever a problem. You change your mind and just want the starter salad as a main for lunch instead of what you ordered because you ate too much at breakfast? (guilty) No problem. You're at Horseshoe Bay and you decide you want a few more beers and wine brought around from the resort? No problem. 6 margaritas at once?No problem. Your dad has a favourite song? Played by the musicians every night. It's that kind of place. We were all so sad to leave that we booked to go again next year as soon as we returned home.

We had a truly wonderful stay in all aspects. The bure was private, spacious and beautifully serviced by housekeeping. The beds and pillows were perfect for a good night's sleep and rest. I loved the swing double chair on the front verandah and appreciated the petite tripocal garden beside it. The food is superb and appropriately sized with wonderful flavours. The options were hard to choose between. The restaurant staff were simply the best. The guided snorkeling tours happen twice daily and were interesting and fun. You can also snorkel off the beach, but I didn't need to. Diving was expertly managed and you can arrange a trip to the White Wall too. The coconut preparation display was entertaining and useful. For the last day, we were kept well-informed of the checkout process, transfer times and day room availability. I could go on and on about how wonderful it was here.

The best vacation we've ever had! This resort is on a private island that has no roads. The only thing you hear at night is the waves lapping on the shore. Service is an obvious priority at the Matangi Private Island Resort. From beginning to end they pay attention to the guest and offer their services whenever needed. Meals are cooked on site by a chef and the meals are FANTASTIC. The bures (huts) are spaced a good distance from the other bures to provide great privacy. Laundry is done daily at no cost to the guest. What?! It was such a treat. There is a pool if you don't like to swim in the ocean, but if you like the ocean the bures are steps away from the beach. It is paradise. Blue skies and water, amazing flowers, and lush vegetation. Oh, and if you want a private lagoon you can reserve the horshoe bay and bure on the island. Complete privacy to snorkel, kayak, paddle board, and relax for 4 hours. Unbelievable!

Toto’a! Awesome and beautiful! Well, it’s all been said before: absolutely wonderful staff, superb service, fabulous food, stunning accommodation, lush gardens, and truly amazing snorkelling. Add to that a sense of being completely looked after and a real feeling of luxury, all in a clean, quiet, peaceful, intimate, and beautiful setting.

We truly enjoyed everything about our 8 night stay in bure #4. For us though, the twice-daily guided snorkelling tours were absolute highlights. We went fourteen (!) times and were never disappointed; with something new to see or experience every time.

Vina’a va’a levu (Vinaka vaka levu) - thank you very, very much to Paulini, Mereoni, John, Betty, Olive, Mary, Bibi
Sireli, Tim, Eric, Jack “Sparrow”, Josh “Shakespeare”, Tom, Horace, and all the others whose names we forgot or missed - especially to those working hard behind the scenes, cooking, cleaning, and gardening! You have all given us an absolutely wonderful holiday.

Getting there: From LAX, non stop on Fiji Airways Airbus is 11 hours. Then a 1 hour domestic flight to Taveuni, a 15 minute van ride, and a 45 minute boat ride to Matangi, where the staff greets you in song.

The Resort: elegant, with about 10 well spaced beautiful bures ( some on the beach, others designated as treehouse). A short walk to the open air dining area, and a lovely pool next to it. During our stay, not more than 10 guests were there at a time, so the staff learns your names

The food and service are excellent. Three course meals ( you make your choices at breakfast) are elegant. They will also modify some of the choices on request

Massages are available every day in a private spa. Yoga mats are available.

Activities:

I didn’t dive this trip; however, the dive operation seems professional and well organized. They do 2 and 3 tank trips. Of course, the famous soft coral sites are not far.

The snorkeling is not great, but they take you out twice a day. The water during December was 84 degrees F.

Lots to do: the pearl farm; waterfalls and rock slide on Taveuni; church service in a nearby settlement conducted in Fijian with beautiful hymns in Fijian; hike around the island ( our guide, Tom, shimmied up a coconut tree and got fresh coconuts for us); an add-on trip to private Horseshoe Bay); kava demonstration; coconut demonstration; and lots of relaxing

Probably the best part is the people: not just the staff, but Fijians in general are truly friendly and welcoming

Bula / Greetings from Fiji! For domestic flights - Cabin Baggage Allowance 1 piece 7kg (15 lbs). Checked Baggage Allowance 1 piece up to 15kg (33 lbs). This may vary depending on the fare you have purchased. Best to check with Fiji Airways online. Vinaka.

Bula Vinaka! / Warm Greetings from Fiji! Complimentary snorkelling excursions are offered daily at 10:30 am and 3:00 pm. These excursions take you to the pristine reefs that surround Matangi. The island offers an excellent hiking trail and a coastal walking trail. These trails can be done with or without a guide. As these are natural trails, it is important to have shoes with good traction. Kayaks and Calypso catamarans are available for use free of charge. Tours to Civa Pearl Farm are offered once a week, usually on a Thursday. A minimum of 4 persons is required. A charge of FJD$55 per person applies for round-trip car and boat transfers. An entrance fee of FJD$50 per person is payable at the pearl farm. As there is no stagnant water on the grounds of the resort, mosquitoes are not a problem. If you have any further questions please feel free to email us via our website. Regards, Christene Douglas
