This is a difficult review to write as there are so many good things about this place and we enjoyed our stay despite what I am about to say.

A lovely hotel in a fantastic location with good rooms and grounds with a fine swimming pool and its own pleasant beach. The breakfast is especially interesting with a range of chinese dishes as well as the usual Vietnam breakfast fare.

Whilst customer service is not great with poor staff English and a lack of understanding of guest needs this can be understood given the relative immaturity of the tourist market on Cat ba and, to be fair, is no worse than many places in Vietnam Less difficult to excuse is the staff's inclination to turn any guest transaction they can into a request for money. The prices in the resort are already high for its class for the rooms, food and drinks but we encountered the following:
- On asking directions to some attractions on the island; 'Here is a map - that will be $2 please' ( for the sort of thing given away elsewhere)
- After an ok massage in a cold room: please tick this box on the satisfaction survey and give me $5 tip (total focus on the tip rather than the customer's unsatisfactory experience).
- On enquiring about a shuttle-bus into town: yes, that would be $5 (for 1.5 km - we ended up walking or getting moped lifts).
- On finding out that much better rates were available to walk-ins than we had got just the day before through booking.com: Tough, cancel on booking.com and we will then give you the walk-in rate.
- At check-out the receptionist's preoccupation was getting someone to check we had not purloined the contents of the minibar rather than addressing our needs with luggage and onward transport.

Unfortunately when one is treated as a source of revenue rather than a valued guest what could have been an excellent stay becomes merely an adequate one.

We spent two nights at the Cat Ba Sunrise Resort, unfortunately the weather was not great, so we weren't able to take full advantage of the facilities. The staff however were lovely, we had dinner there one night which was excellent. Was an easy ten minute walk into town and we hired mopeds locally to explore the island, going up to the hospital cave which was fascinating and well.worth a trip. Would love to return when the weather was better as the island is lovely. One mistake we made was booking a trip back to Hanoi by bus, boat trip around halong bay, lunch in halong city then another bus. Was not a great experience we were jam packed on a dirty old bus with a miserable guide and lunch was practically inedible. The boat was horrible and those unfortunate to have spent the night on it really unhappy! With hindsight we should have gone back on the ferry and bus but were lured by the prospect of a trip around healing bay!

We decided on a last minute excursion to Halong Bay/Cat Ba without any hotel reservations- it was summer which is the quiet season there from what I was told. The Sunrise is a gem and truly the only resort on the Island. We paid 90.00 usd per room which is quite expensive for that area- the first place we stopped at was 12.00 usd a night. The pool area was very nice and kept exceptionally clean- we stayed more on the beach which is a smaller beach but very nice to chill out in and the beach bar would take care of drinks/snacks etc. The resort is in a little cove area with a "private" beach and amazing views of the bay * all beaches are public and at 4 pm every day the public would come in and the place got busy with local families - we woke up early each morning and walked along the cliffs which went to a couple other beaches down the line. The walkway is a little dated and some places it is just suspended over the surf and rocks below by supports drilled into the rock- we were never worried about safety since we were so amazed at the views it never entered our mind. The rooms at the Sunrise were beautiful and each had its own balcony looking out to the ocean- we ate at the restaurant 2 nights out of the 4 and the food was very fresh and good large selection for any picky eaters. This was by far the better place we stayed at - we extended for 2 extra days.

We have just spent 2 nights at Sunrise resort and were very disappointed with our stay. We booked this hotel based on the good Trip Advisor reviews and discovered they didn't represent our experience at all. The hotel is run down and poorly managed - there was no customer service, the rooms are old and tired, the wi-fi doesn't work anywhere in the resort except occasionally in Reception  (after they re-set the router at our request!) and the restaurant is terrible (both the food and service).

We had cold showers 2 days out of the 3 that we were there. It was "fixed" the first night after we let reception know we couldn't get hot water - a maintenance man came into our room, went up a man hole, made some noise and then came down 10 mins later and declared it fixed.  It was I guess, at least for the following 24 hours, but then on our last morning we were back to cold showers again. We let Reception know when we are checking out and got no apology or acknowledgment that this was an issue.

Given we paid $165US a night for this accommodation it was a disgrace - irrespective of its location, it was a rip off and extremely disappointing.  We have stayed at a lot of hotels in Vietnam and this was by far the worst, particularly given the cost of the room. Cat Ba Island has a lot to offer - but just don't stay at this "resort" at the price we paid if you are planning to visit.

This 'resort' was booked by a friend and we were travelling in a party of seven celebrating her birthday and our recent marriage. On arrival I concur with other people's comments. It is a bit of a drive and there may be better accommodation with less of a travel. The rooms are overall to standard.

The problem started when our children wanted massages which were on offer. After one of our daughters finished another was collected from the dining room for her treatment. It went downhill from there.

The method in which the staff member stole from my daughter is this:

One person undertaking massage of clients. Another male person (pointed out to management) was collecting clients in time for their massage. He instructed my daughter to leave her belongings in a particular locker. At the time there was no key in that designated locker despite others having keys. Her room key was in the pocket of her robe which was hung on a hook. Thinking staff was always present and the outdoor room was locked she mistakenly took this person to be honest.

Approximately 10 mins later our friend went to the massage room to retrieve the room key as her 10 year old daughter who had been the previous client wanted to go back to her hotel room. At that stage it was noticed no key in the lock and the robe was on the floor of the locker (ie not hanging where it was left). We immediately attended the room and had staff open it. It was obvious on entering the room that my daughter ’s bag had been tampered with and a $20 US note removed. It has been confirmed the money was there prior to the massage and was removed during the massage.

We then immediately re attended the massage room where the outer door was locked. The male in question opened the door from inside where it become obvious there now was a key in the locker where it was not before. On inspection of the robe on the floor of the locker the door key had been returned to the pocket. No other person was present, the door had been locked from the inside and no other person had access. The massage was still taking place so the only other person in the massage area had no opportunity to be involved.

Hotel management was immediately notified. He stated he was sorry, the matter would be investigated, security cameras would be checked although conveniently they could not be until after we were due to leave. He also stated it reflected badly on the reputation of the resort and we would be reimbursed.

Since then we have not received compensation despite repeated requests. I believe no action or follow up was taken and the staff member involved remains employed.

It is unclear what role management took in the actual theft however have failed to take appropriate action and seem not to care about the reputation of their resort or the fact they have staff stealing from guests.

As others have stated the meal is OK, not fabulous and the only option you have is either one of two set menus. Stay clear of this one.

We stayed at Sunrise resort as part of our honeymoon as we saw the amazing pictures on the website. Locationwise we were not disappointed - it is in a beautiful spot and the hotel itself is not bad looking. However, this is the only positive I can give about this hotel.

From the start the staff were rude and extremely unhelpful. We stayed in several hotels in Vietnam and this was the only one that did not acknowledge our honeymoon at all. In fact they made us feel that we were a hindrance rather than making us feel at all special. The staff were constantly ignoring our requests whether for drinks, food, towels etc and seemed more interested in chatting amongst themselves. The worst example of this was on the beach where the beach bar constantly played deafening dance music at all hours of the day- at several times we were the only people on the beach and when we asked them to turn it down they refused. I saw several other guests ask for it to be turned down too but the staff were too insistent that they should have a good time behind the bar, so in the end drove us from the beach.

Facilities also not great- it has such great potential but food is only served in a cold and unwelcoming restaurant- it would have been so much nicer to be able to eat outside. The beach bar also has so much potential but for some reason closes at 8pm so you cannot have a drink after that.

Our bathroom was also filthy.

I was so unhappy at the way we were treated by the end of our 3 day stay that it was just a kick in the teeth when we checked out that the receptionist procured a towel from our room that we had used on the beach, waved it in our face repeatedly infront of all the guests in the reception area, declared it was too dirty and that we have to pay for it.

I am a fairly seasoned traveller and have stayed at hostels and hotels all over the world and this is without doubt the worst service and the rudest staff that I have ever experienced. This is just doubly worse because it was our honeymoon and I feel this resort has put a huge blot on an otherwise lovely trip.

We were staying on the resorts beach paying for the umbrella & beds what we were completely fine with. The PROBLEM came when I DECIDED to use the BATHROOM. Man waiting by toilets asking for FEE SHOUTING whoknows what pointing at the price. I showed him that I payed for the umbrella, I am not just staying on the towel by beach & wanted to do what I needed. I was wearing just a swims, didn't take my wallet to go to the bathroom. He SHOUTED on me SO LOUDLY that my boyfriend could hear it on the half of the beach were we were staying came fast & since he could see he is an ignorant he told him to leave me to go & he will bring money (of course all with gestures & simple english). After that I tried to go again & he SHOUTED AGAIN at me 3th time. Man near by felt sorry for me that I have to wait till my boyfriend comes back with money & paid it. Than after 5 MINUTES min I was "ALLOWED" to go. This was TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE & I am traveling in Asia for 5 months. The problem was not to pay but the interation with me...obviously for him was important to pay in advance even when my boyfriend went to pick up money already...
Not mentioning that I decided not to swim because during few seconds I pulled BOTTLE & PLASTIC BAG FROM THE SEA.

DEAR MANAGEMENT:
Since you are a 5 star resort take care & train your staff what is BASIC behaving with a customer.

Please take care of the beach & sea since thats what you are making money from.

Very nice hotel on Cat Ba just outside of town. The resort has one of the best beaches on the island and the rooms are very nice. Ours was a seaview (I think they may all be seaview) with a nice sized balconey and a great view out over the pool and ocean. The room was clean and nice sized and had all the standards (tv, mini-fridge, in-room safe, ...).

We only spent 1 night here, so we didn't use the pool or the beach area. But our stay included lunch on arrival and it was excellent. It was a western style meal, but very good and much more than we expected. The breakfast buffet the next morning was also very good with many pastry, fruit, and hot-dish choices. The resort is also walking distance to town (downhill on the way to town and uphill on the way back), but the streetlights weren't on when we were there so you may need a flashlight to help guide you.

Only a couple of (minor) negatives to note. The large bed was actually 2 twin beds pushed together, so there was a seam running down the middle of the bed. The other was the need to carry our bags up/down a set of stairs over the bluff separating the resort from the bay on the outside of town. Families or older couples with heavy baggage would have trouble with this as it would require one to stay with the bags while the other climbed over to the resort to ask for assistance from the staff.

We stayed at the Sunrise Resport during our Halong Bay trip. We decided to stay an extra day on Cat Ba Island since we came there with our kids. We were so impressed by the beauty of the resort. It was on the beach, secluded, and so beautiful. We had a great time at the resort. We came with our 3 young kids and they had a great time playing at the beach and swimming in the swimming pool. We rented bikes and road around town. i believe it was the best hotel on the island from what i saw. I would defiently stay there again.

I am utterly disgraced. The staff here are incredibly rude, blunt and miserable. We were relaxing by the pool and asked a member of staff whether it would be ok to pay for a full day at the hotel (pool, beds, drinks and food included) the member of staff then rolled his eyes, laughed at us and told us we had to leave. He wasn't bothered in helping us at all and made us feel very uncomfortable. When I then asked about speaking with the manager, the member of staff told us he couldn't speak English...Even after just communicating with us in English.

The manager then came out and was just as rude, aggressive and belittling as the member of staff. He then told us the price for one day was 100USD before practically pushing us out the door.

We were then told that we were not even allowed to sit on their beds outside the resort on the beach for 2 minutes while we gethered our things and repacked our bags. They told us we had to pay 200,000 VND to just use the bed for a few minutes.

One star is very generous to give to this resort. Seriously stay away. Your money is way better spend else where.

We were there Apr 2019. Construction noise is basically nonexistent during our stay. They were painting and installing windows and the major works seem to be completed. Always good to check with the resort in advance in case you’re concerned.

I'm in Sapa now and it's not as bad as here, but it is pretty bad considering the money you pay to stay there. The main problem besides the construction is the staff, we went to an 18$ a night room when we left cat ba Sunrise and though it wasn't as cushy, we enjoyed ourselves more. You can also go to that beach without staying there.
