Take part in our Transylvanian Countryside Lifestyle. Zabola is a unique estate, not just in Transylvania. It is a very much lived in family home, a property where guests are invited to enjoy the atmosphere of the turn of the century. Zabola Estate spreads over vast areas of the Carpathia Mountains. Our Guesthouses are dating back to the 18th, 19th and 20th century. They fulfilled different purposes in course of time. The Estate comprises in addition The Old Stables - a banquette house for leisure, drinks, dinners, receptions and other events. A refreshed and maintained English landscape garden with 2 lakes and 4 ponds, pavilions, terraces, a sauna in the woods, stables, barns and walking, hiking and carriage-tracks are yours to enjoy. The rich nature and wildlife we are living in and with is of high importance to us. Next to wild ducks, storks and great blue herons, the Estate and its adjunct forest gives home to bears, deer, wild boar, stags, wolfs, lynx, bats, squirrels and owls.

My experience at Zabola was very disappointing to say the least. I booked the Old Saddlehouse for two nights 18 Oct to 20 Oct 2021 quite some time in advance because of numerous recommendations I kept on getting. Five days before the actual booking I get a phone call from somebody at Zabola, I say somebody because he has not introduced himself, he only mentioned “he is calling from Zabola” asking me if I could change from the Old Saddlehouse to two separate rooms due to the fact that there was a group of 8 people that they would like to offer the Old Saddlehouse to. I explained to them that we don’t actually need so many rooms and I would love to help them but since I was travelling with two children 2&4 and a nanny, I would need to have interconnected rooms. They explained that the rooms are not interconnected so I refused the exchange. On my way to Zabola I called to inform them of the check in time, as we were arriving at 17:00. Upon our arrival there were some workers at the gate and I was surprised when the lady at the receptioned informed me that the Old Saddlehouse was actually the building in front of my eyes which was under renovation and where the workers were working on the exterior façade entirely covered by scaffolding. I was with two tired kids in the car and a cat after a 5 hours roadtrip so I wasn’t even able to have a reaction. I checked everybody in and then went back to the reception and told them how unprofessional this was from them to not inform me in advance. She said that her colleague called me and I refused to change the rooms. The reason was different, I told them, nobody mentioned to me anything about restauration but about a group of 8 people needing 4 rooms which the Old Saddlehouse was having. She told me she doesn’t understand why her colleague lied to me, and did not give me the real reason behind and said to me that unfortunately the work cannot be paused and that they will be working and making noise from 9am to 4pm every day, giving me no alternative but to change as my children were having afternoon naps. I wanted to talk to a manager and they mentioned that this is the only option the manager offered, blocking any contact of such. I cannot explain to you how excited my two daughters were about this trip and how much they waited to come to Zabola because I told them so many nice things about it and they imagined a fairy place where princesses and princes live, because that’s what castles look like in the books we read at night time. I was not going to have this discomfort created, break their excitement. In a different circumstance I would have had a break out and made sure I was loud enough to not let such things happen to other customers, but once again, this was about my daughters’, not about my experience. In the first evening we had dinner at the restaurant where the first spoon I took was with a big hair inside . I informed the waiter and he apologized but still added the meal to the bill. Hadn’t I double checked upon check out I would have paid for the meal with the hair inside. Not to mention that there was no type of service recovery from the waiter, very disappointing once more. The first night we were to tired to change the rooms but the second we had no choice as the workers started making terrible noise and the walls were literally shaking, we took everything and changed to 2 different rooms one for me and my eldest and another to the nanny and my youngest, unneeded hassle. A lot of meat options in the menu but not much options for kids that don’t like meat, my kids had pasta the entire stay. The day we departed the waiter brought me oatmeal 3 times with milk, despite me explaining to him I am lactose intolerant, the coffee came so late and it was cold, I just wanted out of there as soon as possible! They say first impression is the everlasting impression, and so it was Zabola estate for me. I will not return and I cannot recommend it to anybody I know, unfortunately.

The food was delicious. Nice, interesting furnished rooms. Finally something different than the modern ones. For the price you pay, you get a piece of history, an extra feeling. Large estate, perfect for walks. Keep up the good work and your attitude so that you can restore the "old". :)

We appreciated this place like a private estate with traditional/romantic rooms and a big park around where you can take a walk for hours, watch the animals (horses, donkeys, poultry), the nature, just hear the sounds around, maybe take some time in the sauna in the wood. The food was good but a little pricey. We considered we payed not just for food, but for ambiance, services and the place where we were and all the nature around. When you are there, you consider you are privileged to stay in that wonderful place, in the middle of nature, but with high standard services. If you look for a quiet place for long walking, ancient but good quality furniture with very good bathrooms and quality food, you found it! And choose the Breakfast of Kings! You will remember it!

One of the best places, I've ever been. It has history, a revival of the past in the modern times. It did take me back in time, ages ago. It is a majestic project, and I sense a lot of work, love and dedication from the staff and the management. Definitely, Zabola Estate says two very interesting stories - one about the past, and another one about present time, how is the history is writing at the moment. It is luxurious in a simple way (the hardest way that one thing can be), very elegant, but yet very natural, connected with the surroundings. Well, the place and the vibe brought me in a contemplating and lyric way of being, so, I am sorry if my review is so much about sensation, how I felt, how I perceived the place. Some people will find the place pricy, the accommodation and the food, which maybe it is, but for me it worth every money spent there. And I am happy that I had a small contribution in foundation and in whatever is becoming this place. It is good to be prepared with proper clothes for hiking, rainy weather, if u want to visit the surroundings. Yet, you also can be very elegant for having the dinner at the restaurant. Looking forward to come back.
