A dream, simply a dream, I don't know how else to describe it, two weeks in paradise. Everything was fantastic, location, sea, food, staff and relaxation and total fun. I was there 15 years ago and the only flaw I can find is the excessively increased price, but I don't think it depends on the structure.

You will find the organization, the rooms and the amenities of a 4 star hotel here. If you are looking for the "ultra-luxury Maldives", look for something else.
- We stayed in a Junior Suite, close to the Presidential Suites, Sunset side.
- Rooms: large with basic but good-quality furniture, bathroom is a little bit worn out but very spacious. You will not find anything special in these rooms besides the very comfortable size.
- Food: wonderful, it's really THE plus of this resort. Take the full-board and enjoy. Wonderful large italian buffet with many world food options every day. A little minus about the breakfast. Way too much sugar and not enough fruits (to the management: you need to transform this into a buffet-like fruit experience, as in the main restaurant)
- Island: it's a VERY large island for Maldives. This might surprise many of you, as this is not standard for the "typical" Maldives. You need bicycles or the free electric cars to get around the island.
- Ambiance: run by italians that make the experience joyful, less formal than in other premium results. You have to like this ( I am italian and I do). The % of italians used to be extremely high, but went down over time as the management is trying to make an effort to bring a more international clientele. The typical mix is: italians, russians, germans, some french, swiss, middle east.
- Diving: i have stayed many times in Maldives and the climate conditions changed over time so it is difficult to compare underwater fauna/flora btw resorts. Just to set expectations right: you will have to take a boat to see something. There is nothing outside the resort, no corals, no life. I did not find this an issue thanks to the twice-a-day (free) boat to a nearby island, which was good. I made my Advanced Open Water, and I do recommend the diving center.
Advices
- Pick-up rooms on the Sunsite side. It does make a difference. You have a laguna with shallow (and rather unattractive) water on the Sunrise side, you have open ocean on the Sunrise side. The close you are to the Presidential Suites, the better. The price difference is worth.
- The seaplane transfer must be in your budget. It's not included and you have to count on it. Also, be patient: after a 10h international flight, you might still have to wait hours before getting on that plane to the resort

Our stay at Palm Island Beach Resort was very nice. It could have been so much better. The island is lovely, the fruit bats amazing, turtles on our doorstep and dolphins regularly passing a little further out.
We ventured on two boat trips both included in the price. One to a fishing village, a bit of a sham really. Shown round a school while pupils were in attendance and a boat yard???
The desert island trip was heartbreaking, the island was covered in plastic. This being a worldwide problem we all have to take responsibility for.
The islands visitors are predominantly Italians. Great if you speak Italian. No one spoke to us. We were the only English on the island. Most staff were curtious but all management were invisible.
We arrived and we're given a room key dropped off at the Villa and left to get acclimatised. Sadly the Villa had not been cleaned.
4000 miles 20 hour journey from home and the sodding villa is not ready. Nobody really cared. It was cleaned but no apology.
The food was acceptable for buffet food but no more than that. Internet rubbish. T.v forget it. Probably just as well it stayed off for two weeks.
Our cleaning guy was great. I did find sitting in the same seat for dinner very tedious. But I understand why they do it.
The biggest problem we had was the cost of the Sea Plane Transfer . Three times prior to arrival I emailed requesting the cost. No answer. I asked when we were there. No answer. It came when the bill arrived on the last day. $1020.00 dollars.
Yes folks £710.00. Beware. I asked to speak to a manager. None was forthcoming, I insisted and they were phoned. I was trying to get some money off. It's a lot of money for a 40 minute return journey. I was asked what nationality I was. No discount for the English.
Does that mean if I were Italian I would have got a preferential rate.
Xenophobia.
Palm Island is an all inclusive resort and as such everything seemed limited. But I suppose that is reflected in the price as it is not the most expensive place to visit in The Maldives.
The Maldives, and I will never forget is a stunningly beautiful place and should be treasured for all to see.
We will not be returning to Palm Island.

We arrived to an odd location, not a normal Marriott experience.
The check in desk was small, not what one would expect for a large hotel, or resort. Luckily there were no queues, it would have been a very long wait. Check in staff were good, friendly, no issues at all.
In our group were two mums, one dad, and 5 kids (ages - 14,11,11,10,8)
We headed over to the kids pool area (the main reason we selected this hotel venue). The whole area was very inferior looking. Small pool area, slide was not too bad, the surroundings seemed very drab, and didn't seem clean at all. The bar looked half stocked, the service was slow. No one greeted us with a smile, we didnt feel welcome at all, we felt like we were a burden to the few staff that were there. We had to try and clean the table ourselves, there was dirty water on the floor area by the bar, where the tables are, some of this was spoilt drink, that we had to ask someone to clean up. Food came fairly fast, but was worse than a fast food place for quality. Trash bags left out by the bin. no one handing out pool towels (they were hidden, so we had to grab them ourselves). The kids complained that the pool water was freezing - this is disgraceful, you are saving money on not heating the pool! Pool bar shut at 6pm, along with slide, and waterfall. So bad.
You have to pay for beach lounge - cheapskate hotel!
The rooms are actually very good, and worthy of the price. If you just need to stay in the room, and you dont need to use their restaurants, or kids pool then you will be fine.
For us, basically we will never come back, nor could i recommend this. Far superior hotels 45 mins south.

My wife and I are Maldives fans since our first visit in 2003. We go there every year, chaning resorts, and our last visit was in Palm Beach one, in mid march.
The first thing we notice when arriving was the plane “landing” near the beach (10m).
We were used to land on platforms away from the Islands, and brung on by boat.
Poor bungalows nearby. Happily, our beach villa was on the other side of the island.
*** a BIG island ***
It is near 3-5mn in golf car to go from the local “airport” to the reception. By the way it is the only island were we saw cars, even golf ones (electric).
The island is so big that there is a free rental of bycicles. The good things are that is is a very original experience and it helps you make some sport or ballad.
The bad things are that if you don’t like cycling, cars are a minimum of 15mn to come after being ordered, and distance walking can be disuasive for certain bungalows.
Beside, bikes are not all brand new. Ours had missing brakes and very uncomfortable seats.
This did not prevent them to be borrowed by other guests, leaving us on our feet to return from Coffee shop to our room... However, the limited amount of bungalows make them very intimate as they are well distant.
*** bungalows***
We paid for a beach villa (with bedroom upstairs) on the sunrise side.
If we had knew, we would have booked a standard beach bungalow. The villa itself is nice, spacious, great bathroom, even if quite basic for a 4* resort.
However, it appeared that for 2 persons, the ground floor was useless, and that the upper bedroom was a plague:
- we were used to rest in the other islands after lunch in the room, until the sun becomes less hard. Here, because of the roof proximity, it was hot ! I had to set the clim to 18° at noon to balance the heat, while 25° was fine elsewhere.
- during the night, you need to get down carefully (not to fall in the stairs), cross the room to finally get to the toilets.... Don’t drink too much beer !
Beside, we realized that the beach bungalows provided exact same confort. Only the below sofa room – we did not use – , and a bubble bath – we did not use neither - were the Villa plus. The villa are even closer to each other than the bungalows... Fortunately they have better vegetation protection for intimacy.
My wife being pregnant, we asked for a quiet villa on the sunrise side, with beach and shadow capability. The reception kindly granted us one like this.
Only issue we discovered was that another villa, inland, had a direct view on our villa open bathroom ! It was specific and limited to our villa, the #17... Unfortunately, we were told that there was no other villa free. This was a lie as we had no neighbours on our right until the 2 last days. We had frequent glances at the villa balcony when being naked in the bathroom. Not very intimate...We were informed some days after that the guests in that villa were leaving and would be not replaced. This too was wrong, as 2 days later a whole family was in.
I would have prefered not to be told anything. Better than to set wrong expectations...
*** Sunrise, Sunset ***
This island, like many other border islands have 2 totally different sides. One is the side facing the reef, the sunrise side, the other facing the lagoon, the sunset side.
Both have good and bads. I’ll try to summarize them
- The Sunrise side : The reef makes constant wave noise. Some will love, others not. Sometimes in the room, with the reef noise and the clim, (and sometimes rain), it can be quite confusing. The reef side is full of coral. This is the best side for snorkelling. Many Titan fishes. In the morning (in march), around 10-11am, the water is at the lowest tide. Water is cristal clear, no waves. You can see fishes through. Best time to do water waling (with shoes because of coral) or taking the sun in the plastic chair in the water. Fortunately, the coral starts 5m after the beach so that you can swim without needing shoes. Apart some specific areas, water has mainly a grey, clear aspect here (mineral). Because it is not very deep, this side is quieter : not many people walking or bathing. Perfect to rest. Sun disappears sooner and shadow is easily available. Good for those not wanting to burn or having young kids. Unfortunately for certain bungalows, it is the airport side, meaning that planes pass very near sometimes.
- The Sunset side: it is the typical postcard side. Water is turquoise blue, deep, and calm. Beach is wide, lot of sand, few corals, ideal to bath. On the other hand, it is hard sun, and shadow is more difficult to get. There is a wonderful sandbank at the sunrise extremity of the island (near the presidential suites). Go there early in the morning (8-9 am): tide is low so tha you can walk away from the island, and there is not many people yet. Indeed, very soon a lot of people go to camp in front of the bar. Families, couples, spending all the day there, grouped like walruses. We avoided that point as people is definitively not what we are looking for in Maldives. I think bungalows between the main deck and the presidential suites are good places to stay.
*** food ***
The island is managed by an Italian, and is 90% full of italians. You’ll find informations written in italian, big letters, and english, small letters. The good thing of it is that food is great in terms of quality: fresh italian style pizzas, Barilla pastas with homemade sauces, a lot of fresh and fried vegetables, great desserts etc.
Unfortunately, italian do not like much experiencing new meals. As a consequence, after 3 days of extasis, you just realize that the menu is always the same, and that there is very few maldivian or even asiatic food (only one small plate with rice and local curry, not very visited, while on the other islands it is usually 40-60% of menu).
Cooks are either italians or have been in Italy to train. As a summary, great food, not very typical of the place and quite repetitive. Note that despite the gratuity of mineral water in the restaurants (not in bottle), there is no free water bottle in the rooms like you have in other resorts. Not even to make your “free” tea. You have to purchase a water bottle from the bar. Strange marketing choice.
*** restaurant ***
Restaurant is very nice and spacious. It is splitted in 4 areas, facing the beach, separated by sand and vegetation. It allows fresh air to balance the heat. The place is great, but it is messed up by the way it is managed. 4 parts was ideal to split as follow: smoking couple, non smoking couples, smoking groups, non smoking groups. Indeed, despite it is forbidden in their own country, many italian people do smoke in the restaurant there. My wife being pregnant we tried to avoid this as much as possible, we even moved table, but it is hard to escape. Getting away from one a day, the morrow you have another even closer. Same thing for groups: we were looking for peace and quietness, and we were put in the middle of large tables, speaking loudly, lots of children etc. The top was reached one stormy day: rain falling loudly, dizain of children speaking even more loudly and the adults as well. We just felt like in a school cantin, and not in a Maldivia Honeymooners island!
Our waiter was efficient and anticipated almost all the needs. That was the good point. Too bad the restaurant did not manage customers expectations.
*** service ****
At the time we were starting thinking this 4 stars Island might compete with the 5 stars one we had just been in, service screwed it up.
The island way to work sets the reception as a critical point : almost everything has to pass through reception. Renting a car, booking a dinner in lobster restaurant, room service etc. Doing so, you would expect to have the most serious profiles at the reception. There wasn’t.
Many times, when calling, I had strong difficulties to understand the receptionist. I understand italian (my wife is italian), I understand and speak english and I’m used to speak with asiatic people in english due to my job. But there, I just had huge difficulties to understand (and be understood) either in english or italian... I would have expected to have very fluent people at the reception. I don’t expect maldivian people to speak english : I just mean that when you, as a manager, put a lot of importance to the reception like there, you’d better ensure they understand the customers queries. Fortunately there were sometimes a foreign guest relation agent that was easier to speak with.
Another example was the romantic lobster menu. We wanted to have one for our wedding birthday. Unfortunately it heavily rained that evening. No pb, we’ll take it inroom. We were proposed to get the dinner for 8pm and were happy with that as we were starving (main restaurant starts at 8:30pm). 8:30pm still nothing. No notification. I call the reception: It will be there in 5 mns! 9pm still nothing... Beside the delay (I can understand difficulties due to the storm), it is the absence of notification that pissed me off. I believe it is not up to the guest to call reception to know why the meal is 1h late.
Same story for a car booking. It was 4:20pm and we had a massage appointement in the spa at 4:50. It is 5mn walking but it was raining. As there was far enough time, I called the reception for a car as soon as possible (so in theory at 4:35 latest). At 4:45 still no car, despite 2 callbacks I did to the reception. We just left and walk to the spa as we were now late...
I don’t blame the poor guys at the reception. I blame the management for not putting the needs and right processes to ensure commitment. It is better to say 20mn for a car when you know you can’t ensure 90% of your cars being there in 15mn, etc.
Setting wrong expectations, not meeting commitments and not advising customers proactively when something goes wrong is the receipe of poor customer service.
Maybe it was due to the italian easter holidays, but if the first 2 days started well, we finished the stay dining in loud atmosphere, and surrounded at the villa by 2 big families with screaming children.
Not exactely the quietness we were looking for. Here again, I’m not saying families shouldn’t come to Maldives, but that individual expectations have to be managed. You can't handle the same way and aside people coming to meet friends and ones coming to spend honeymoon in privacy. Our expectation was to be in quiet place, but no one just cared about or proposed room changes to offer us what we paid for. As a result we were not able to rest there as wished.
If you love italian food and like to be with your friends at the sea, doing sports, and telling loudly your daily advantures to the table audiance, Palm Beach may be great for you.
If your are honeymooners and look for the peace of Maldives to take intimate rest, go to Coco Palm or Banyan Tree. It is more expansive but it is worth the effort.
I'll post soon a complete set of pictures on my flickr website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sro1234/

It's basic, simple, very informal, friendly: the Palm Beach Resort in the Lhaviany atoll is the place were we spent our honeymoon and i think it has nothing to do with the luxury of the big resorts around the atolls, but it is a place where you can still feel something of what these islands must have been ages ago, without spending too much money: there is just sky, see, wind and the ocean breeze and what you need to "survive". The bungalows are large, clean and very well kept, the beds are big, the bathroom very spacious, the beach is nice and the food is very good. The only thing, to go there you must like (and be prepared to)a totally italian atmosphere in such a place: the guests are mainly italians and so the people working at the diving center, at the restaurant, in the shops. The resort is altogether quite nice and very quiet: they are restoring the fitness center and the villas which will be improved soon. The top end of the island has a few sunbeds and a nice bar, along the day you can hang around by bike (it's provided by the hotel) watching trees and exotic animals, enjoy little pizzas slices at teatime, try an asiatic massage at the beautiful spa on the beach (people here are very nice), and of course go snorkeling or scubadiving. If you decide to go i suggest to avoid the (deluxe) rooms from 21 to 26 form where you can hear the noise of the electric generator standing right in the center of the island. No need to bring smart clothes, we were barefoot for two weeks! But do take with you something against mosquitos...

We found this island to be not very welcoming with not the usual high standard of food quality and choice we have experienced before in the Maldives. Very much an Italian Island with Italian management and in the main Italian speaking staff. Not much infrastructure for other nationalities so we struggled with this not be able to speak Italian. Didnt think it really was up to Four * standard having stayed in 3* previously which was much better quality. Disappointing. But having siad that the Maldives are fab and we would rweturn, just not to this island.

We stayed at Palm Beach for the first two weeks in May 2008, our first time in the Maldives. We were a little worried about the weather knowing May/June was the beginning of the rainy season, but it turned out we were really lucky having only two days where there was any rain and even then it cleared the muggy air, plus it didn't last for long. The other bonus staying during low season was that the resort was in no way over crowded (60 people in total!) many of whom were diving, so at times it felt like we had the island to ourselves. It is a fairly big island for the Maldives, but we chose it because it is still relatively under developed, in the sense that much of the natural vegetation remains on the island giving it a really natural feel. This is not a place where waiters constantly attend you, which for us was a really good thing. The guests on the island are predominantly Italian couples, which suited us as we were keen to remain anonymous and spend time together. Although their antics were fairly entertaining at times, especially the treasure hunt, but not the nightly Italian singer. We would regularly retreat to our lovely room after a couple of songs that were being murdered! Even the super friendly waiters could not hide the pain of having to listen to English and American classics being crucified in Italian with a synthesizer keyboard! Anyway, we've broken down different aspects of our experience for you below:
Accommodation
We stayed in a standard bungalow (Room 46) on the sunset side, which had more of a breeze which was a welcome relief. The room itself was spacious, clean and well laid out. The bed was comfortable, there was a large walk-in wardrobe area and the outdoor bathroom was luxurious and modern in style. The bungalows are well spaced with shrubbery in between providing required privacy and the sense that you have your own private bit of beach! There were loungers for the beach that floated in the sea (good for sunbathing) and loungers to sit on your porch with a Maldivian swing which was fun to read in, basically lovely big comfortable rooms - you would need to have money to burn to go for the suites as they are virtually the the same size.
Please Note: If you can, we would suggest you put in a request to stay away from Rooms 21-26 due to the proximity to the generator, the which can be quite loud, spoiling the peaceful ambience of the island.
Food
The food was good but if we were going for three weeks we might have got a little bored - but that is the nature of buffets i guess. Fresh fish grill every night was the highlight with good quality home made pizza and fish curries coming a close second. Being a big coffee drinker it was a relief having good quality italian coffee on offer. Water is charged for by the bottle which is a bit annoying on a full board island although with 4 meals a day and drinks free with dinner it was not a big deal.
Service/Staff
You get assigned a set table and waiter for the duration of your stay, which is fine and no constant requests for tips. Upkeep of the island is carried out by staff constantly and is done with meticulous care and attention (sweeping sand, removing leaves that have fallen throughout the day etc) Room boys tend to your room twice a day, replenishing towels. No need to bring any towels, there are plenty in the room and there are beach towels available from the fitness centre, by the pool bar. We visited the doctor a couple of times (situated in the reception building) and the doctor was very friendly and helpful in assisting us. Barmen in the Pool bar were very friendly and attentive.
Activities
This island was great in this regard with tennis courts, squash courts an fully equipped gym, free bicycles, beach volleyball and an astroturf football pitch as well as water sports equipment like canoes, wind-surfers and a sailing boat - all of which was free of charge and for us always available as the island was not overcrowded. The snorkeling equipment is also free but we would advise you take your own to get the best experience!!
Beach
The beaches are great, beautiful white sand and clear blue water, simply beautiful. Fun to watch the crabs scrabbling about the beach. On a couple of occasions we saw baby reef sharks swimming close to shore! Be prepared to see a lot of geckos around the island, particularly on the white walls on the outside of the bungalow and hanging out in the outdoor bathroom. They make an odd clicking noise, which you'll get used to and they're actually very cute to look at. You'll also see your fair share of fruit bats, one of which relieved itself on my head as I was playing tennis! As far as mosquitos go, they smoke the island every day at dusk and we escaped without a single bite despite not using any deet.
Overall, we had a great holiday with no complaints...except of-course for the Monarch flights...just don't do it, it is definitely worth the extra money to fly long haul with a decent airline. The flights both ways were a nightmare of unbearable discomfort, inedible food (if they can call it that), no TV screens in the back of the seats and to top it all off moody air hostesses.
Hope this review has been of use to you if you are thinking of staying here, to sum up it a lovely untouched slice of paradise.
