A lovely big old house with history. Huge rooms, good bathrooms, very comfortable beds. Its an old building but inside its been very well furnished and looked after. You also have the whole house available to use, so lounge with log fire, big kitchen, outdoor BBQ, etc. We don't often stay at B&B's/shared accommodation, but this certainly didn't have that... Pros: Mark, the proprietor, makes Shady Rest worth the stay. He provided us with great recommendations for what to do with our time in Takaka. Great breakfast with excellent coffee. Very quiet room. Other comments: There is no TV in the room (there's a lounge with community TV); the room lighting is not great for reading; the bathroom has minimal... More

Thank you for your review, its terrific to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Regarding your comments ,i decided not to have tvs in any rooms as although the walls have been sound proofed there is a possibility that loud tv sets could disturb other guests. There is 4 soaps in each bathroom ,but no shampoo or lotion... More

Marc creates an admirable feeling of comfort, in the most professional manner. We came to Takaka for a Climbing week end and Mark turned it into an great experience. Easy to interact with he is also extremely helpful as far as getting to and from the bus station. Guests were very inspiring as well. Highly recommended place.

Mark, your host, makes Shady Rest. He basically created it with his own hands. A very accomplished guy, and a real character, with a heart of gold. This is a bed and breakfast establishment. The rooms are large and so comfortable. And the breakfasts are a work of art. Staying here was a unique experience. There are restaurants within walking... More

A very unusual B&B in an old former doctor's grand house, being improved on over time and decorated with an interesting selection of artworks. The place grows on you, assisted in no small way by Mark the host. His knowledge of local attractions is excellent, his breakfasts excellent and his impromptu pizza dinner was the best evening we'd had in... More

On our arrival, Mark immediately made us feel v welcome bringing a lovel pot of freshly brewed coffee to sit in his garden whilst he told us about the house and the best places to visit during our 3 night stay. Thus included walks to springs, forest walks and local beaches. The breakfasts were lovely with bowls of fresh fruit,... More

Marc is a fantastic host. We felt welcome, the moment we entered the house. Marc arranged for all needs and took interest in the guests stories. This one hundred year old house has been professionally renovated with added art features. Home brewed beer might be available...
