I have read about the owner who speak good english before the trip, and I have verified that. Jimmy speaks very fluent english, answer every of your questions well, make right on dot recommendation. During meal time, he took effort to explain the food prepared, its origin, etc. I highly recommending you to pay for the half board package, as this pension is located on the hill area, far from city, therefore, not easy for you to get food unless u drive. Also, the foods served were nice, fresh, delicious!
We booked one Japanese room and one standard room. Both rooms were clean, neat, air-conditioned, and spacious.
I was worry about shared bathroom facility as my family didn't used to that. However, it turned out that there are 2 big bathrooms with pool, which you can make it a "private" bathroom when u used it. Therefore, problem solved right away.
Toilets are available on second floor too!
My family enjoy staying here.
As we were driving, therefore, location is not an issue for us. For those without car, the location is not very convenient though, this is the only con observed.

My family of 3 stayed last summer here and the owner Jimmy and his family are amazing! He speaks excellent English as he had previously stayed in the USA. The room is spacious, cosy and well-furnished. Jimmy picked us from the station on the first day, and he or his wife drove us whenever we needed to leave or return to the house. There is Rokkatei and a lavender farm nearby.

The wife cooked our breakfast of many dishes, all with local fresh ingredients. They tasted really delicious, especially the home made bread. The dining area is homely and rustic with a view of the countryside. There is also Sapporo Classic on tap.

We bumped into them during the Furano Heso Festival and were invited to their table. laughed and chatted, sharing their festival snacks and rounds of Sapporo beer.

Jimmy san, the owner of the guesthouse, speaks impeccable English and has a great sense of humour. Although the guesthouse is not near the Furano Station, Jimmy san will send you to and fro or wherever in the vicinity which you wish to go. Hence, no worries for those who do not have their own transport.
The room is big and extremely clean. There is also a 3-seater sofa on which you can relax. Although there is no attached bathroom, the communal bathroom can be locked for private use. A hair dryer is provided. On the second floor, there is a small communal area where you can enjoy some peaceful moments. Jimmy san also provides a refrigerator for guests who wish to store their food during their stay. A word of caution - if you are a light sleeper, this guesthouse may not be suitable for you as the walls are thin and you can hear people walking and talking outside your room.
The simple western breakfast is prepared by Jimmy's wife, whom he jokingly refers as his boss.
There is a winery next to the guesthouse and a sunflower field within 5 minutes' walk. Further from the field is the grape juice factory where you can enjoy grape juice ice-cream. Don't forget to get the discount coupon from Jimmy san. He will give you precise directions on how to get to each of these places.
Thank you, Jimmy san, for being such a great host!

Pension Ashitaya

While established hotel chains gives consistency and no surprises, for the adventurous optimh to stay in a B&B usually means a home-stay with higher quality food & personalized services. It is always the owner-operator who makes a big difference to your holiday.

Nakajima-San, also known as Jimmy, @ his wife works super hard to keep this baby going. It is a family-run business with his parents, wife & 3 kids.

When he picked us up from the train station, I made a casual comment that Hokkaido produces the best milk ever but I have never sighted a cow in Hokkaido. Guess what Jimmy did? He made a detour to show me where the cows are. This is not experience I will never forget!

He is also a joker and somehow, I believe it makes his job more fun and a de-stresser.

LOCATION
-10 mins drive from JR Furano.
- There is no public transport but if you arrange ahead, Jimmy is more than happy to accommodate a pick-up. It is important to give him heads-up time because he runs on a very tight schedule, though he is too polite (typical Japanese hospitality) to say otherwise.
-A great summer retreat on the rolling hills of Furano, next to a vineyard.
- This B&B also makes a great family or church care-group retreat. Especially if you book up the whole place.
-Email Jimmy at furano@tomarrowya.com for bookings or what's app him at [--]. The challenge with many nice local pensions is that they often don't show up on internet searches as much compared to the larger chains. Lack of volume means fewer reviews too.

CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT
4pm / 10am

ROOMS
-Named after trees in Japanese
- total : 10 rooms
-Ours was a large room overseeing the vineyard with a sofa. Now, that is a holiday !!
-Television (we slept early & did not turn on)
-No ensuite but the shared bathrooms / WC are SUPER clean, and more than sufficient. I had lots of apprehension because it has been a while not having ensuite. So remember to bring your own nightwear :)
- WIFI reception is strong & super fast!

COMMON AREAS
Bath: Super clean, despite being shared. You can have a hot soak in the evening.
Refreshments: Hot tea, water cooler, fridge for guests to use.
Dining room: 3 large amazing wood tables with excellent wifi

FOOD
Dinner:
We had home-cooked dinner here, cooked by Mrs Nakajima and it is awesome that she uses local produce. Even the rice is from their daughter's friend's farm. Their pickles are home-made too!
Breakfast:
Mrs Nakajima is the most amazing cook ever! Our breakfast is a full meal, starting with onion soup, followed by main course with home-baked rolls, and finally yoghurt. There is the usual orange juice & milk.

Finally, because of our lack of language and lack of car, Jimmy went the extra mile to help us. This is the type of service you'd
never get from any hotels. He even got his good friend, Ricky (another comedian to help send us for Hot Air Balloon! )

Where do I start? We arrived at Furano train station and our host (please call me Jimmy) of the Pension is waiting for us in a minibus. We arrive at the Pension, are introduced to Jimmy's wife (the Boss) and after a tour of all facilities sit down for a fantastic Yen 1,500 Japanese 5 course dinner. Jimmy speaks perfect English and with a dry sense of humour thoughtfully explains the dishes. For the kids, anything unusual is chicken or a Japanese radish! Breakfast is more of the same, with another fantastic Yen 1,000 Japanese/Western breakfast with explanations of what we are eating. After breakfast, Jimmy drives us (all lifts are at no charge) to the New Prince Hotel and organises our ski hire and lift passes before arranging to pick us up at the end of the day. Four days proceed exactly the same. On the last day, the bus was not running to Sapporo (because of snow). Jimmy explained the position and made sure that we had a place on the next train and waited with us until the train arrived. What an amazing host! A perfect stay! A pity that my skiing was no where near as good!

Stayed here for 2 nights between 31 Jul - 2 Aug 2014. The pension is located quite far from the JR station, but wasn't a problem to reach as we drove there. It's very quaint and cosy as it only has 5 rooms. The room size was quite large.

While the bathrooms are communal, they are kept extremely clean and even with my aversion to shared bathrooms, I had no problem using them. My room was literally 5 steps from the toilet, so it wasn't that inconvenient. Toiletries such as toothbrushes, hair brushes, face wash, soaps and shampoos are provided, as are towels.

We had a meal plan at the pension, and the homecooked food was very delicious and healthy, I especially enjoyed the herb butter scallops (but the menu changes every night!). Dinner is at 7pm, while you can choose your breakfast timings (between 7am - 830am if i am not wrong?).

Jimmy, the owner, is extremely friendly, accommodating and funny, and gave us suggestions as to where to visit in Furano. His command of English is great.

Would definitely stay here again if I visit Furano.

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Hokkaido, was a homestay at Pension Ashitaya in Furano. My son found this place on Trip Advisor while planning for our vacation. It is also not far (about 10 minutes drive) from Farm Tomita which was resplendent with lavender and other floral blooms in their glory.

The home owner Nakajima-san aka as Jimmy speaks some English, but communication is a lot easier if you speak Japanese. Amenities provided are quite on par with most hotels in Japan. His home has only 5 rooms and is spectacularly clean and his wife cooks some of the best Japanese meals we have tasted.

They are both very gracious and helpful hosts.

Jimmy took us out to a lighted Lavender field near their home after serving us dinner; and it was totally impromptu. He also told us where to get the sweetest corn and melons and where we could get good ramen - all spot on.

One drawback is that the toilets are shared and the bathrooms are communal. So if you are uncomfortable bathing with another person, it is something you need to consider. I was fortunate to find a time for both my evening and morning showers alone.

With hind-sight, we regretted staying only one night at Pension Ashitaya. So if you want to stay at a place other than a hotel during your trip to Hokkaido, this is a homestay that I would definitely recommend.

Stayed for just one night at this very personal, homely bed and breakfast style accommodation.
It is well located for Furano, and also walking distance to the winery and a great cafe.
The owner, Jimmy, is lovely and he and his wife are great hosts. The food is great- the dinner in particular was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan.

Jimmy san and family provide a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the wonderful country side of Furano and experience amazing home cooked meals. Jimmy san’s English is very good and provided heaps of advice on the best place to ski, eat out (although I don’t know why we did that) and things to do in the area. They have a great tradition style hot bath (but private) to relax with after a hard days skiing. Thank you Jimmy san and family for a wonderful experience.

Jimmy-san is such a good and caring host of the pension. We initially plan to stay only for two nights but with the fresh home-made bread and breakfast in the morning echoing with the nice sunny weather, coinciding with the tempting dinner all cooked by Mrs. Jimmy makes us an irresistible extended stay for another day. The environment is spacious, with a big hot bath tub and a super comfortable pillow that put my neck pain away. Jimmy-san speaks good English and we enjoyed very much the dinner chats with him. He is also very helpful and gave us good suggestions to walk and play around at Furano. Really appreciated and we just feel like home! Jimmy-san, thanks for your hospitality!
