We read that we needed a place to stay overnight in Tiger Leaping Gorge as this was a good halfway point for the hikes we wanted to do. After asking around we heard this place was perfect for that.
The place had the best food we had while in TLG and the prices for drinks were fair. The beds were comfortable enough for the night and the shower with hot water was very welcome.
To get here took us about 6 hours from Naxi Family Home. We are not fast hikers and we stopped for about half an hour at Tea Horse. To get out of here you can take a bus from Tina's which is about a 2 hour hike down.
Highlights during our stay was the dinner and breakfast with a great view of the gorge. There is also a rumour that they have the toilet with the best view - It is a squatter with a fantastic room. We booked the cheapest room and didn't get much of a view but if you spend a little bit more you can get a room underneath the patio area with great views of the gorge. The staff here are also very helpful and will help arrange dinner and breakfast.
The basic room we had needed some maintenance - the shower head mount was broken and the smell from the pipes in the bathroom would leak into our room if we kept the door open. There was kids during our stay and they don't mix well with the metal stairs or hallway light switches. It did quiet down around 10:30 and we had a good night's rest.
Overall it was a good stay and I would recommend to book a room here to break up the upper trail hike and the middle trail. If you feel you can make it a bit further you can try but I feel this place was perfect for us as beginner hikers.
Also, you might have to order your dinner as soon as you get there. They encouraged us to do so as they had a busy night. We heard rumours that they run out of hot water some days so we showered early just in case!

The way between Tina’s and Halfway is amazing! It’s my second hike here. Really good also with the children. The guesthouse is very simply, but in perfect position.
The people are friendly and take care about everything. The beds are very good and view... just amazing. The guesthouse have also very delicious food! Must try: the “sandwich” for breakfast with local bread 🥰!

After a day of hiking the amazing Tiger Gorge we were thrilled to reach our destination. Beautiful views on the upper balcony are worth everything. The hostel seems poorly organized as check in and meals were slow, but reasonably good. However beer is readily available. The rooms are very clean and there is plenty of hot water.

Comfortable and Beautiful Stay.
I went for a 2Day Trek in Tiger Leaping Gorge in September 2024 and I chose Halfway Guesthouse as my ending point for Day 1. My double room with balcony was very spacious, comfortable and with beautiful views. The Open Air Balcony which attracted all hikers to visit Halfway Guesthouse, had fantastic views of the mountains. There are swings, deck chairs and 2 pavilions for us to relax and rest after a hard day’s trek.
On the location, it is somewhat the mid-point of the Tiger Leaping Gorge Trail. It is about 13km away from our starting point at Naxi Guesthouse. However, HalfWay Guesthouse is actually another 900m of uphill slope walk from the ending point of the mountain trail. When we end off the trail, we have to walk about 900m more to the guesthouse. Almost All hikers I met on that day still walked to HalfWay to visit the Open Air Balcony to take photos!
Food at Halfway was fine, prices might seemed a bit higher but still ok. Overall I had a great time hiking and the stay for 1N was great as well!

This is my first time writing a review regarding of any Hostels as Halfway has been my worst hostel experience ever.
After a whole day of hiking I arrived at the guesthouse with several of my friends and hoping to stay for a night. I'm Chinese but spent most of my lifetime in the States so I have always approached people with mandarin in China. I went up and asked the Check-in lady if its okay if I take a look at the room in Chinese, she immediately got annoyed and threw me the key and said go for yourself (she was very nice to my friends who are westerners and were speaking to her in English just a minute ago). So I thought whatever people can be mean I would not get bothered and went checked out the room. It was a nice private room with beautiful mountain views. I really
liked it and wanted to book the room, but I wanted to make sure that they don't have any double beds left as I was by myself and the room I saw was twin beds. So I went back to the Check-in lady and asked if they have any double beds left, out of nowhere she got extremely pissed off at me and started yelling at me in Chinese, 'Do you want stay here or not? If you don't want stay here just leave now!', It was really mean and I was shocked if her words. So I asked her why she was talking to me like that all I did was asking a normal question. She just kept on saying you want stay you stay otherwise you should leave.
Despite of her awful attitude, I really wanted to stay with my friends and was super tired of hiking, all I wanted was to check in and get some food. So I chilled down a bit then went up give her 200 kuai for the room, she looked at me and said 'you are clearly not happy here, you should go to whichever hostel that is gonna make you happy and we don't want do business with you', then kicked me out..
There I was, tired, angry, and felt I was getting treated so unfairly. I left and went to the village asked a local person if she could take me to Tina's. On the way down she asked me did you get kick out from Halfway, I was shocked and asked her how did she know. She said you are not the first one, I have seen them kicking out Chinese people in the middle of the night even. They only wanted to do business with foreigners and don't care about Chinese people at all. More than that, they have been here for over 20 years and all the Hostels send their guests there so they think they can do whatever they want.
So here you go, to any backpackers who's reading this review, is this the kind of business you wanted to support?

Well it's been about a week since our stay at the Half Way guest house and we've been just ITCHING to go back. Well, OK, maybe not itching to go back, but definitely itching all over our bodies thanks to a massive infestation of bed bugs in our room. It didn't take long after lights out for these pesky insects to get to work attacking our bodies. We complained the next morning to the manager, and he told us that our room permitted a maximum of 2 occupants, and they would give us a break and not charge us extra for the dozens of tiny guests sharing our room. That, at least, was a relief. If you are feeling charitable and want to donate blood, go to a Red Cross blood drive, NOT the Half Way guesthouse. Yikes!!!

After coming from the relaxed welcoming joy of Naxi Guest House, Halfway seemed poor in comparison. We actually had a great stay here and would definitely recommend it however the room looked as if the lasts guests just made the bed and left. Our bathroom was unclean and smelly with mould in the shower and a filthy plastic bucket with remnants of the last guests toilet tissue. The staff seemed stressed and didn't have time for you. The girl on the front desk told me they are full almost every night and had 80 people come through the day before. The view..fantastic, the food...great and above all the atmosphere on the rooftop terrace more than made up for its lack in other departments. Good hot shower, no wifi. We would still stay here again.

From the moment we arrived here, it was clear that they cannot cope. We were kept waiting an hour for the room as it was being cleaned - well it wasn't. Cigarette buts and old used tissues on the floor, filthy bathroom and hairs in the bed. Nasty. Dinner is a similar experience. They are so busy, we ordered at 6 and they seemed to serve everyone else (who were in bigger groups) and eventually we got ours at 7.45. Our room was underneath the terrace and we were kept awake by a large group of visitors who weren't there for the walking. Then they left a door open that slammed all night. Don't stay here, other places in the village looked nice.

Stayed here while we did tiger leaping. The room was ok and the buildings aspect and design amazing but the bathroom was horrific. We aren't fussy but the smell or raw sewerage, mould on the walls and used plastic soap packets etc shows they just don't care. Top three worst places we have stayed in 3 months of backpacking. Upon arrival reception was rude and tried to flog us rooms for 300. Ended up paying a 100. We had breakfast here fried egg on naxi bread. They messed up our order and then when it did come the egg was dripping in oil and bread wasn't completely uncooked. Despite not staying at come inn we went for drinks and dinner there and the service and food was amazing! Some Of the people we chatted to who were staying there said it was great and super clean. Support someone who actually cares about their customers. Stay at come inn.

...but the view over the Gorge is amazing and you will probably have a nice sleep here after a rough day of trekking. Cheap accommodation and serves pretty good food, I enjoyed my stay here and especially the view! For just one night of sleep, this guesthouse is absolutely perfect than.

Yes, definitely. Either from Lijiang or Dali there are busses that can take you there. Are you staying in one of those cities? Could you double check the name of the bus stop at your hotel? I took the bus from Lijiang.
Along the river there is a moderate highway built and there is a bus stop. It is possible to come back to your cities the same way.
From there you will be able to hike up a bit till the Guest house. I cannot remember what is the name of the station though. Sorry :
Just a quick note that we ended up having no problem at all getting a room at Halfway Guesthouse without an advance booking, and I think this is pretty typical for the guesthouses on the trek!
Does anyone know how I contact the guesthouse owner directly, via email, phone or any other method ?
