Nice friendly staff and decent rooms. The baths are nice and the area is stunning. However, the food was the worst we had in Japan- especially the kids food: cold deep fried chicken and cold great tempura prawns, cold omelette covered in ketchup and desert - all on the same plate. Hilariously bad. The breakfast buffet contains one bowl of...

Stayed there for one night. One night + 2 meals (dinner and breakfast) deal. Fantastic from arrival till departure. I picked up rental car from Kumamoto on day of torrential rain that went on till the next day morning. The whole Kyushu was soaked. Arrived outside the hotel at almost 7:00pm. Hotel staff saw my car and immediately came out...

Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The greeting was warm and the host explained the facilities at the ryokan, including facilitating the booking of the private onsen in the evening, which was included in the price of the room. The meals were top notch, with a kaiseki dinner and excellent breakfast. There are...

I usually would list out the pros and cons in my review but for this hotel it's hard to do so because it's quite different. Sozankyo is a totally traditional onsen ryokan which means it's not quite like anything you have seen outside Japan. The hotel keeps a long history of hosting its guests in the most Japanese way. You...

My husband and I stayed for one night in the room with private onsen. The setting of the room is lovely, large and clean, with a huge onsen tub outside of the room and shower area also outside of the room. Onsen water is a little rusty which looks really authentic, and they also have private onsen which you can...

The night I live in this ryokan it was raining, the pitter-patter was so aid-sleeping I would never forget. The courtyard is moderately designed. I tried the private onsen for 30 min, it is a romantic experience, I can enjoy the scene while in the onsen pool. After onsen, drinking cold milk and read some western books are enjoyable. The...

Although not much to look at from the outside, the stay at the hotel was lovely. We were in a roomy traditional tatami room with a view of the small, pretty garden, with very attentive hospitality. We were served an excellent kaiseki ryori meal in the room, different dishes on each day, with standout Tai fish and miso aubergine. There...

This is a mid-sized hotel with several dozens of rooms. Really a perfect pick for us. We were greeted by a guy who spoke a good level of English. The room we picked was of a good size facing the garden. The beds were comfy and the room was spotless. Japanese style with western-style mattresses - my favorite combo! We...

For a place in Aso, I must say it's really nice. I spend the package for the dinner and breakfast. The onsen for individual are free but you must book at check in. I like the one air. Dinner is really nice. Personalise menu. I ended up fairly happy except for 1 thing, the Internet repeated outside my room doesn't...

It is a rather small boutique onsen hotel with limited public facility. Location is a bit boring, not much around the area. Room condition is mediocre, not much view. limited TV channels. onsen quality is ok. Dinner and breakfast are delicious. Price is rather reasonable. Overall, not a bad experience.
