Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay located at the southern tip of Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef, 80kms north-east of Bundaberg (north of Fraser Island). The island is regarded as one of the best snorkelling and diving destinations on the Great Barrier Reef and is famous for its unspoilt coral reef and amazing array of spectacular marine life including turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and the entire cast of Finding Nemo. Lonely Planet voted Lady Elliot Island # 2 of “The 7 best beaches for snorkelling around the world” in February 2020. Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort provides a range of low key accommodation options ranging from 2BR Beachfront Units to our new Eco Cabins for those on a budget as well as two Glamping Tents for couples. The overnight rate includes: Buffet dinner and breakfast daily; One free glass bottom boat/guided snorkel tour per person; Free use of snorkel equipment (mask, snorkel, fins); Snorkel lesson if required; Range of guided Island activities/tours; and Environmental management charge. Scenic flight transfers depart daily from Bundaberg, Hervey Bay/Fraser Coast, Brisbane (Redcliffe) and Coolangatta on the Gold Coast.

I visited Lady Elliot Island with a group of fellow travel professionals from the UK, Australia, Italy and France, I was thrilled to be in the co-pilots seat for our short 30 minute flight from Bundaberg, all seats have good visibility and the pilots make a point of circling the island so everyone can take photos. The flight and landing were smooth and comfortable. On arrival we were immediately struck by the huge numbers of birds nesting in the trees, many with chicks, but we were more concerned than they were about being in such close proximity. We just had time for a quick coffee and briefing before getting into our snorkelling gear and heading down to the lagoon for a snorkel before the tide went out. Reef shoes are necessary because the island is a coral cay. It was bizarre to be snorkelling over coral that would soon be exposed to the hot sun. After our trial snorkel we took a glass bottom boat ride out to the coral gardens which was informative and fascinating. The sea was a bit choppy and I was a little apprehensive about snorkelling but reef guide Tenielle was on hand to offer reassurance and she stayed with me throughout pointing out various coral and fish. A highlight was when we were snorkelling above a beautiful small turtle and suddenly caught sight of another huge turtle swimming past us! The current was strong in places but there is a rope and buoys that act as a guide and a resting spot if you need a breather. Thanks to Tenielle I enjoyed my best ever snorkelling experience on the reef and it was one I will never forget. The island is very well maintained, our snorkelling equipment was of a good quality and all the staff were friendly and cheerful. We enjoyed a tour of the island's nursery and had free time to relax or explore after a delicious lunch in the restaurant. There is a great little gift shop, an information centre, and a research centre. Lady Elliot Island is a nature lover's paradise. We all agreed it was a highlight of our trip! …

We spent 3 nights at Lady Elliot Island, on the southern most tip of the Great Barrier Reef in May 2022. I chose May to increase our chances of snorkelling with manta rays, and we stayed in one of the glamping tents, which I'd had a to book many months in advance (they only have 2 of this style of accommodation). It was awesome! First, note what Lady Elliot Island isn't. This is not a five star resort with a swim-up bar, choice of restaurants and a day spa. If your looking for that, choose another Barrier Reef Island. But if you want excellent snorkelling in the safest of conditions (there are more adventurous snorkelling options and scuba diving) in comfortable surrounds with good food, then take a closer look at LEI. We flew from Redcliffe Airport (just north of Brisbane) in a Cessna Caravan, leaving at 7:15am. No complicated check in and an easy 80 minute flight watching the coast go by. Soft luggage, 15kg plus a little hand luggage, breakfast pack, COVID mask still mandatory. You circle the island and land on a grass airstrip. All part of the price. The glamping tents were very satisfactory. Again, don't think 5 star, but really good. Plenty of power points; lights; a separate bathroom with a great shower cubical with plenty of hot water, toilet and basin; fridge; wine glasses and tumblers; electric jug/tea/coffee/sugar/ mugs (there's a jug in the fridge to get fresh milk from the dining room; small balcony with chairs; inside chairs; comfy double bed; a hanger for clothes and an outside hanger and tub for dive gear. Clothes hangers were a little sparse. Plenty of towels available for bathroom or beach. Several standards of daily housekeeping are available (we opted for none - seemed unnecessary for 3 days). I can imagine the tents might get hot in mid-summer, but they are quite high ceilinged and have an electric ceiling fan. Close the curtains at night so as not to disorientate nesting turtles with the room lights, depending on the season. You're a few metres from the beach (with loungers) but there's no view from the room as you're surrounded by trees and nesting birds. Even without the view, we sat out on the balcony a couple of times with a drink. The resort has a dive shop, gift shop at reception, single restaurant and common areas (DVDs and a player - there's no TV in your room), a bar (yes - cocktails!), barista-style coffee machine, table tennis and board games and a lecture theatre. They have daily activities like fish feeding, snorkel lessons, volley ball, sometimes a movie, walking tours and wildlife talks. You can get your diving qualifications here. That's about the only time I saw the pool used - training scuba divers! I heard the divers raving about the dive sites, so I assume it's pretty good. The snorkel equipment is free, and for the novices there are life jackets and pool noodles. Every afternoon, there are sundowner drinks at the lighthouse to watch the sun go down. It's wine and beers, but you can order pre-mixers from the bar in advance (one night we ordered gin & tonics in advance, another we had champagne). Everything is charged to your room. The lighthouse is also the only place you can get some intermittent 3G phone signal on the island. You can buy wifi to use in the common area - there's none in the rooms. We didn't bother. Turns out I could live without posting my life to Facebook as it happened for a few days. Who knew?! Breakfast and dinner is included. For lunch you can pay for the buffet or order burgers, etc, from the bar. Breakfast is pretty much as you'd expect - buffet cereals, fruit, toast, crumpets, juice, tea, instant coffee, porridge, yoghurt, waffles, pancakes, bacon, eggs, hash browns, mushrooms, baked beans, tomatoes. You can buy barista coffee. There's some variation each morning (eg waffles vs pancakes, type of fruit, yoghurt flavour, etc). All stock standard but nicely done and you won't go hungry. Dinners are mass-produced buffet style - not made to order - but there's lashings of it (all you can eat) and a wide variety of choice very night. The whiteboard with the menu indicates what dish is gluten free, nut free, vegetarian, etc. There's a soup, a few salads, often a rice or pasta, nibbles (cheese/cold meat/olives), cooked vegetables and say four choices of mains - over the nights we had lemon chicken, fall-off-the-bone lamb shanks, beef ribs, sausages, Thai prawn and squid (very good!), lamb cutlets, barramundi and pork belly (nicely crackled!). One night, there was a huge bucket of giant tiger prawns! Then there's a different selection of desserts every night. Dinner was great considering they're trying cater to a lot of guests with a wide variety of tastes. The wine list is pretty good. We had cocktails one night. The snorkelling is out of this world! There are two main areas. To the east of the island (out into the Pacific Ocean) is a protected and very shallow lagoon full of coral. It's perfect for the nervous or novice. Plenty to see too - coral as far as the eye can see, colourful fish, turtles who are used to people, even skittish black tipped reef sharks that won't bother you. The lagoon is surrounded by a coral barrier against which the Pacific waves break, so there's no chance you'll get swamped by a wave or washed out to sea. To the west of the island, by the lighthouse and effectively facing the Australian mainland (not that you can see it) are deeper areas. They're not that deep, but deeper than the lagoon. There are the coral gardens and the lighthouse area. They have buoys and ropes in certain places for a rest and they also indicate a path. Green and loggerhead turtles, larger fish like giant Queensland grouper or Maori wrasse, the occasional small reef shark, tasselled wobbegong and plenty of coral. We must have swam with almost a dozen unconcerned green turtles in our time here. Off the lighthouse, further out from the coral gardens, are the coral bommies. This is where the manta rays hang out - the smaller fish at the bommies clean them. It's about 200m out, marked by a buoy and a flag, in about 7m of water. It's best not to swim around too much. Find a spot and hang around and they'll come to you. We went out twice. The first time we saw 3 each (a total of 4 - my wife saw one I missed; I saw one she missed). The second time we went out we saw 4; sometimes in pairs. Someone we met saw 7 in one session. We were out for almost an hour each time, including swimming out and back. It's a fair way out, but there was little current and we never felt ill at ease. We'd do 2 or 3 snorkel sessions a day. On the western side of the island, they have a good system where the give you reef shoes, and you wade out to a basket (say knee deep)where you leave the reef shoes and sit down to put your fins (flippers) on. Reverse the process when you come back. Very clever. A good thing to do on arrival is to get on the first available glass bottomed boat and snorkel tour (included in the accommodation price - book at the dive store). They take you out to see if the manta rays are around and then for a 45 minute escorted snorkel over the coral off the lighthouse. It's a great way to orientate yourself, snorkelling-wise, and the marine biologist who accompanies you is a wealth of information. The island is a bird haven too. And they just don't care about you. We had a baby red-tailed tropic bird right outside our door - a ball of fluff that the mum would feed from time to time - and nesting white-capped noddys within 1/2 metre of the room. Yes they can be noisy (and the room provides earplugs!), but they didn't keep us awake. After a few hours in the water, some big meals and a few cocktails at night, we were asleep at 8pm - and slept for about 10 hours! Island bliss!…

The bird noise was incredibly loud all day and night. The stench of bird poo was constant. There was nothing to do but nature stuff. There was no golf course, no night club and no casino. In other words, the place was absolutely perfect. We saw manta rays, octopus, gazillions of beautiful birds and endless fish and coral. We’ll be back hopefully with grandchildren in tow. It’s a great place for families with kids. (Actually there was a lot of kids’ activities - volley ball, pool table, swimming pool, children’s menu, etc. and there was child care so adults could catch a break.) we’ve traveled a lot for nature stuff and this place was pretty top of the list.

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort Lady Elliot Island Profit Before Safety 917952419 I have been to Lady Elliott Island several times, my first time was in the 1990's back then it was the perfect place to holiday if you are a Scuba diver or a snorkeler. Safety was always number one, they used twin engine aircraft if one engine failed you had the other one. Scuba diving was very professional with two dive masters on every dive, one to be in charge of the dive and the other dive master to look after divers who needed help. I returned recently with my family after an absence of a few years. There is now only one dive master on every dive to look after all the divers, on one of my dives the dive master got so anxious that everybody was told off on the dive boat after the dive, this is the first time that I have ever experienced this. If there was a second dive master as there used to be the load would have been shared. I hope this new one dive master per dive policy does not cause any future diving accidents ? The present Lady Elliot Island lease holder uses predominantly single engine Cessna Caravan aircraft because they are more profitable as the lease holder mentioned in an article that appeared in the Cessna News. I always felt safer flying to and from Lady Elliot Island in a twin engine aircraft that was used by the previous lease holders. I am always worried when my family and I fly to and from Lady Elliot Island in a Cessna Caravan that we might have engine failure and have to ditch into the ocean and be unable to vacate the aircraft and drown. When Prince Charles visited Lady Elliot Island 2020 he was flow there and back by the Lady Elliot Island lease holder in a twin engine aircraft, if its good enough for Prince Charles it should be good enough for everybody. I always looked forward to the food on Lady Elliot Island, now it is horrible all sorts of strange sauces are added that really spoil the taste of the food. For breakfast every morning there is a different style of cooked egg each day, I like scrambled egg, it was only available on one day of our stay, in previous years scrambled egg was available everyday along with fried egg. The return guest complementary bottle of white wine was taken home by my wife to use in her cooking as it taste like vinegar. Now on every piece of spare land in the resort area there is a building, even a new one squeezed in behind the toilet block. The trees in front of the buildings are now blocking the nice ocean views. New checked in luggage fee, for every one Kg over the 15kgs limit per suitcase you have to pay $16 extra, if you take your own Scuba gear to Lady Elliot Island it weights 20Kgs without cloths, Lady Elliot Island expects you to pay an extra $40 per day to hire Scuba gear on top of the $85 charge per dive. Major airlines allow you to have a 23Kgs suitcase. Lady Elliot Island is now way too expensive for what you get, its like a 1970's rundown miners camp, at least the miners know how the cook tasty food. The humble table tennis now has a new surface and a metal net, we used to look forward to our games of table tennis but now the ball does not bounce properly anymore which makes it impossible to have a proper game, for $500 to $600 you can buy a new table tennis table from Decathlon. We used to enjoy Scuba diving at the Blow Hole on every trip unfortunately during our stay we were not taken there for some reason and it was not because of the weather. Tranquil Lady Elliot Island is no more, my family and I will not be returning again, I'm sure that who ever responds to this from Lady Elliot Island will put down the usual bs spin.…

Response from Lady Elliot Island, Marketing at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort
Responded 25 Oct 2023
For potential guests reading this review and to our wonderful Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort supporters, we would like to address some of the above comments regarding safety on the island. Safety has always been and will remain our highest priority. Therefore, we appreciate this opportunity to discuss some of our safety measures. The dive instructor (leader) is there to provide guidance and assistance if needed. This is for the benefit of the divers. As certified divers, there is no requirement to have a dive guide present. However, as per our company standards and policies, we ensure a minimum of one dive guide present at all times. As part of our risk assessment, we assess each group prior to every dive; based on the groups level of experience and ability. Two dive instructors may attend if we have experienced and novice divers in the same group, to ensure both levels are covered and catered for. This is above and beyond the current Queensland Government and PADI minimum standards required for open water divers. Aircraft flown to/from Lady Elliot Island are chartered from Seair Pacific. Seair Pacific has been the sole aircraft charter provider to Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort since 1997 and were operating into the Lady Musgrave Lagoon for the 12 years prior, commencing in 1985. That equates to 35 years to the Southern Great Barrier Reef Islands. During this time Seair Pacific have utilised numerous different aircraft types including both the Cessna Caravan and DHC-6 Twin Otters. Seair complies with the mandatory Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulatory audit regime and operate Cessna Caravan aircraft under a comprehensive Pilot Training and Checking system which was implemented in 1997. This is the highest standard of pilot checking and training available and is normally only utilised by airline operations. Few Air Transport Charter operators in Australia achieve such high standard of pilot training and checking. Seair Pacific Aircraft are maintained to the Class A Maintenance standard to meet the requirements of Approved Single Engine Turbine Power Aircraft (ASEPTA), now known as (PSEA) Prescribed Single Engine Aircraft. Again, this standard is normally only achieved by airline level operators and is very rare in Air Transport Charter service companies. Seair Pacific conducts all its operations under its own Air Operators Certificate. The AOC covers various aircraft types and permitted operations. Current aircraft utilised are the DHC-6 Twin Otters and Cessna Caravans; C208, C208B and C208EX. Seair provides their customers with the best possible aircraft available and suitable for the task of Lady Elliot Island Operations at this time, with the primary goal of providing the safest possible aircraft for our guests, team and our families who travel in them. These amazing new, modern and extremely efficient aircraft are equipped with all of the very latest technology, including computer designed impact resistant airframes, synthetic vision, TAWS (terrain avoidance warning systems) TCAS (traffic collision avoidance systems), radar altimeters, colour weather radars, Garmin G1000 NXI full glass, fully IFR cockpits, latest high G load tested passenger seats. They are equipped with the very latest Pratt and Whitney PWC PT6A-140 867shp Turbo prop engines. The PT6 engine is well known worldwide as one of the most reliable engine types ever produced. Pratt and Whitney PT6 engines have been manufactured for 60 years and over 60,000 engines have been produced into service. This world fleet has flown over 400 million hours and are the most popular engine on the market due to their unmatched engine reliability and safety record. With well over 25 years of operations into the Lady Elliot Island landing area, the Cessna Caravan aircraft has proven to be the most capable, efficient, safe and reliable aircraft to operate due to a number of factors, including runway length, short field capability, rough coral runway challenges, aircraft climb rate, cruise airspeed and passenger comfort. Not to mention the most fuel-efficient aircraft type per passenger mile flown, which aligns closely with Lady Elliot’s commitment to minimising our impact on the environment and climate change issues. The Cessna Caravan is a remarkable feat of modern aircraft engineering which is why there are now over 5000 of them in service worldwide. Passenger luggage limits are restricted by the size and legal carrying capacity of the aircraft. Included in your overnight booking is 15kg of luggage allowance per person. Up 50% from the 10kgs allowed under the previous Island management some years ago. For any additional luggage there is a fee associated for additional allowances, as with any other airline/charter operators around the world. Major airlines allow greater luggage allowances as the aircraft travelled on are significantly different, and cannot in any way be compared to the aircraft flown to Lady Elliot Island. We hope that this response has assisted in responding to the safety comments and therefore has equipped our potential future guests with information, comfort and knowledge in choosing a destination to safely and comfortably enjoy the Great Barrier Reef.

We have just come home from a 5 night stay and have had the most amazing time. We stayed in the eco cabins and they were exactly as advertised and they were clean and comfortable. We went there on a diving holiday and to see the manta rays, we were not disappointed. We dove every opportunity we could and everyone of those dives were different and absolutely amazing. The reefs all around the island are spectacular, the mantas were my absolute favourite but the turtles, sharks, rays and massive grouper also had us all incredibly excited. The snorkeling is also so beautiful, it was so relaxing to just float around and watch all the activity happening below. The absolute best part was the staff though. The biggest thank you to our dive instructors, they made our trip and it would not have been the same without them. All of our guided tour staff were very informative and ready to answer any questions. The bar/cafe staff were very friendly and helpful for any requests that we had and the chef and kitchen staff were so wonderful. The food was top quality, my son who was with us is a chef and commented that the quality they produced as a buffet menu was amazing. And also our night entertainment with Seb, what a character and an absolute gem. We are already organising our next visit and cannot wait. Thanks everyone for an amazing time. …

We booked this tour feeling extremely excited. The brochure looked great and trip sounded great. But we felt it was very overpriced for what it was. The flight was good, could clearly see all the way there and back. We enjoyed our snorkelling saw some beautiful fish, coral and turtles but we found the staff in the restaurant very morose and rude and the buffet lunch was absolutely horrible!! Take a look at the menu, if you don't like meals that have spicy heat then basically you had to make yourself a toasted cheese & tomato sandwich or a salad wrap or sandwich!!! Not good enough for what we paid. No wonder all the overnight guests paid for Al la carte lunches!! Don't get me wrong we enjoyed the snorkelling but compared to other trips we've been doing from Hervey Bay it was NOT good value for money at all. We won't be back.…

Beautiful Island , wonderful & plentiful food snorkelling was incredible, the rooms are okay ,basic but sufficient, there is a lovely verandah with 2 chairs but the chairs are not comfortable at all and unfortunately couldn’t enjoy sitting for long , and the rooms don’t have a lounge to relax on, anyway ( just a couple of little things) but on the whole highly recommend going to Lady Elliot Island its a wonderful experience

We spent 2 nights and three full days on lady elliot island which was a great amount of time. we flew over on the 8am flight and back on the 4pm flight 3 days later. The planes have great viewing windows. Checked in weight limit is 15kg and carry on 2kg limit. When we arrived on the island the strong winds meant the lighthouse and coral garden snorkelling was closed. we did the glass bottomed boat and snorkel in the lagoon, but this was pretty mudane for us. We also booked for the safari snorkel and dont recommend this at all if you are a competent snorkeller. All the sites were accessible from snorkelling from the lighthouse and most were in fact totally unsuitable for snorekelling. Whats the point of snorkelling over sand 15 metres below, or a reef way below. really we found it was a total waste of time and money. just snorkel from the lighthouse and coral gardens and you will get the very best snorkelling. i preferred the lighthouse at high tide so could glide over the reef, but even at low tide it is fantastic. I found a shortie wetsuit perfect in August and never got cold despite being in the water for over an hour on one occasion. If you hire the wetsuits it is $16-50 per day for shortie wetsuit hire. we got up and went snorkelling at 7am one morning from the lighthouse. we went half way between the white and red marker buoys and had five mantas feeding all around us, they danced and circled and time and time again came around us and almost right up to us. we just floated on the surface with no movement. From the lighthouse - We saw dozens of turtles who werent worried about humans and glided alongside us. we saw octopus, black tipped reef shark, wobbegong shark, fish of every shape, size and colour and beautiful corals. We stayed in a two bedroom reef unit and loved the day bed. fantastic shower and great sunrise. Do be aware that the birds chirp all night. We had a red tailed tropic bird family - chick and two adults in front of our unit. Communication was at times frustrating. We went to the dive centre 3 times to find out when the nighttime glass bottomed boat was going. in the end we cancelled out as noone could tell us. The relaxed rustic atmosphere is great. meal times fairly flexible. The buffet meals were no five star meals, but good food. the desserts were disappointing and we found them too creamy and sweet. There are regular activities such as reef walk, island tour, discovery, behind the scenes, manta and whale talks. We watched whales breaching from the beach. The wifi is $20 for 1gb. It works great from the deck area at the cafe, and its a pleasant place to sit. Reef shoes are necessary. The resort is very casual, shorts and top is perfectly acceptable at meals. Beach Towels are provided. take at least two pairs of swimwear. There is also a very nice pool area. I could have taken way less clothes as we lived in swimwear and wetsuit when in the water, and then just beach clothes at other times. Sunglasses, hat (totally necessary with the birds) also required. It is a stunning location, and time to visit is now - before climate change. the highest point on the island is only a few metres above sea level. …

My wife and I have just got back from LEI for our 4th time in 3 years and loved our 7 nights. The marine life is amazing, Mantas, whales, sharks, turtles, octopuses, and all the fish never cease to amaze us. We snorkelled the west side mainly and it was incredible. When we went to the lagoon side we had countless turtles and several Octopus to look at and they are next level, they are beautiful. Every single staff member was friendly and engaging. A special mention to Kaitlin, she was funny, knowledgeable and an amazing person. When she called a Manta a jerk for swimming away from our group I almost drowned from laughing so hard. Peter (who freedived with my GoPro and got an incredible video of Manta) once again very knowledgeable and great to talk to. Also Naz who was one of of snorkeling guides, great person and very knowledgeable. A shout out to Airlie from F&B who made great coffee at 6.30am so we could start our day. Airlie was also there to dish out our drinks at sunset on the western side of the island. Once again sunsets were fantastic. We’ll be back. Cheers Mark and Mary.…
