My girlfriend and I spent 8 lovely nights at this expansive resort. After having visited the Mayan Riviera area once before, it took this stay at Iberostar to understand and truly appreciate the peninsula way of life. The resort was a big part of that. From smiling and friendly staff to great food options and well appointed rooms, I was impressed and pleased with this resort selection. I would have rated this resort higher if not for very minor nuisances such as the consistent sales approach in the lobby from people who wanted me to buy into their vacation packages. That was a bit annoying and led to a mis-booked massage appointment as the nice young woman posing as concierge was really a junior sales rep and didn't know how to set up an accurate appointment at the spa. She was there solely to pitch me on "getting some information about their resorts." The Greek restaurant's food was great but it's a small, high-ceiling, open room and with young children screaming during dinner, could have been a better experience. Iberostar is all over the world and has a consistent, well-oiled system that made some moments feel a little toouvh like being on a cruise ship. Tons of activities are good but when you just want some peace, the high-energy games and fun are not always on point. All that aside, this sprawling resort is beautifully maintained, has every amenity you'd want, has a great beach (get there early if you want chairs and shade), and awesome staff. I feel like the value was on point for what we paid and expected from an all-inclusive and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Stayed at Paraiso Maya Suites from 8/29 to 9/5 2021 I will try to make this fair and honest About the area: It's located about 45 minutes south of the Cancun Airport. It's between Peurto Moreles and Playa Del Carmen. Iberostar has something like 4 or 5 properties at this location; Del Mar, Playa Beach, Lindo, Maya Suites, and Grand. It's like a very large campus and covers a LOT of acerage. Depending on which property you book, you will probly have access to some of the neighboring properties as well. Paraiso Maya Suites check-in: The lobby is gorgeous, done up in a Mayan theme. The furniture/benches to sit on while waiting to be checked in are NOT comfortable. They sit too close to the ground and the cushions slide everywhere. They need better furniture. The check-in process was ridiculously slow. Much slower than I think it should have. Took a good 45 minutes or longer, then I was asked to speak with a lady at a desk to arrange for a covid test before my travel back home to the United states. While the check-in process was really slow, everyone was very friendly and courteous, and greeted me with a smile. The room: My room was 6101. Each building has a concierge. The conceirge desk was literally right outside my door! I thought that was kind of funny. Anyway, the room was very nice and felt like a palace! The bathroom was enormous, had a jetted tub which worked really well, a separate walk-in shower, and a double-sink vanity. The soap dispensers in the tub and shower area are CHEAP and need upgrading! The one in my shower kept falling off the wall! I didn't see any signage explaining that you need to SQUEEZE the bottles to get them to dispense. I (Like many others, I'm sure) made the mistake of trying to press from the top of the dispenser, and then CLUNK! It would fall off the wall!) I kept bumping into it in the shower, and CLUNK! It would fall again! The maid probably got tired of having to put it back on the wall, and finally left the shampoo bottle on the shower window sill instead. In the hallway as you enter the room, there's a counter space with large closets on either side of it. There's a safe in one of the closets, plenty of shelf space, places to hang your clothes. There's an ironing board/iron, and umbrella. Under the counter is a small fridge behind the cabinet which is stocked daily with a couple cans of soda, some beer, etc. The room didn't have a coffee maker or microwave, but you really don't need these items, being the restaurants and bars are included in the price. The bed was king-sized, and VERY cofortable! No, I didn't sleep like a baby because, come on, everyone knows babies don't sleep! They just fuss and cry all the time. (At least every baby I've ever watched would) I slept VERY well!!! TV was decent, channel selection was meh, but you probably aren't going to spend much time in the room watching TV, so not a big deal there. Room has ceiling fans, which is a plus, as well as air conditioning which worked VERY well. Also, I don't know if they inject it into the air conditioning system, or use it when they clean the rooms, but there's a certain, fresh, tropical scent or fragrance to the room when you walk in that smells sooooo good!!! There's a separate seating area with a comfortable sofa, a small coffee table, two chairs, and a desk. There's a very large, sliding glass door which leads to a private balcony. Out there is a hammock "chair" and a regular chair. The view was of the trees/jungle. Not much to see, no beach/ocean/or pool view, but still nice. Felt very secluded. The buttons on the phone were mis-programmed. If I wanted to call the bellhop, I'd press the bellhop button but end up getting connected to the spa instead. If I pressed the concierge button, I'd get connected to housekeeping! Too funny. This needs to be fixed!!! With the exception of hearing an ocassional chair being dragged across the floor from the room above me, the room was VERY quiet! It was great. Pools; This is where the resort REALLY shines! The pools are MASSIVE in size! There are something like 5 pools, and this is just within this particular property of the Iberostar campus! They are breathtaking! There were a lot of people there, but it never felt crowded. There was plenty of room to swim around, do laps even, without bumping into someone. This was great! A couple down sides though; As I said, the pools are enormous. There's a lot of walking involved to get from one pool to another. There is only ONE towel hut! This means if you wanted to use the water park, lazy river, or wave pool, you've got to walk WAAAAAAAAY over to the towel hut to get your pool towel, then walk WAAAAAAAAAAY over to the pool you wish to swim in. Pretty ridiculous. I think a better option would be for each pool to have its own. For the large pool, it wouldn't hurt to have a towel hut on both sides of the pool so you don't have to walk way over to the other end. Pool chairs/shade Yes, every resort has their share of chair hogs. This place is no exception. You know who I'm talking about; the people who get up at 6:00 am, put their towels and things on an entire row of chairs, and then disappear for a few hours. Please DON'T be that person!!! I never had much of a problem finding an available pool chair in the mornings, but by noon, the pool area can get a bit crowded. The beach Believe it or not there really IS a beach here. You wouldn't know it. It's hidden, and it's located WAAAAAAY at the back of the resort, behind a bunch of trees. Once you finally locate it, it's breathtaking. It's one of the nicer beaches I've been to. They have showers, a bar, and a snack shack where you may get bugers, hot dogs, and ice cream. Quite a few palapas and lots and lots of lounge chairs. It's nice! It really is! Restaurants The restaurants are scattered throughout the resort. Some are on either side of the large pool, while others are located two counties away (I'm beling sarcastic), waaaaaaaaay over by the lobby. My favorites were the Stake House and the Italian. The Mexican and Japanese restaurants were also quite good. Entertainment There's a large, outdoor theater located under a giant-sized palapa where they feature different shows every night. In the early evening they have the kids from the Star Camp perform, and it's kind of cute to watch. As the evening progresses, the shows get even better. I saw a tribute to Boogie Nights, and was VERY impressed with the lighting and sound. They spared no expense! The effects are state-of-the art. They make it look 3-demensional. Looks VERY cool! I also saw their show which was a tribute to Queen, which was very well-presented. Very impressive. Getting around the resort As a mentioned, the place is HUGE! There is a LOT of walking involved to get from one area of the resort to the other. If you're an older person, or have mobility issues, this resort might not be a good option for you. If you're young and energetic and don't mind the walking, this place is perfect. They DO have golf cart shuttles. Just call the bellhop and they can come and pick you up and shuttle you to where you need to go. Unfortunate mishap: With many vacations, there is usually something that doesn't quite go as planned or something that happens which "Could", if you allow it to, put a damper on things. One morning I jumped into the pool and swam around for a good hour before discovering, to my horror, that I still had my cell phone in my pocket! Oops! Phone no longer works. Guess where my vacation photos were stored? That was dumb. I could have been really upset about that, but I forced myself to laugh it off. Stuff happens. It's all in the attitude. I wasn't going to let that spoil my vacation, and it didn't. Oh, one thing about cell phones; The resort has an app they encourage guests to use. With it, you can make dinner reservations (which ARE required for most restaurants) and view the menus. They're pretty dependant on guests using this app. With my phone not working, this created a bit of a problem. But they DID have printed menus, so all was good. Exploring outside the resort: The resort has everything you could possibly want, but I recommend you pick at least one day to do an excursion of some sort. Get away from the resort for a while and actually explore some of the things Mexico has to offier, maybe mingle with the locals, experience authentic Mexican food, ect. I love sailing and wanted to book a sailing excursion. I had specifically told the lady at the excursion desk which excursion I wanted; (Sea Passion) as I've done that one before and really enjoyed it. She ended up booking me with the wrong one. Yes, it was sailing on a Cataraman, but it WAS NOT with the company I had specifically asked for. YES, there IS a difference. Sailing was still fun, but the lunch and ammenities were extremely lacking compared to the other company I had wanted to sail with. Again, attitude goes a long way here. I just shrugged it off, shook my head and laughed. I told myself, "Next time, MAKE SURE it's the right company!" I still had a good time. Overall I think this a great place! There are a few things that could be improved, but I enjoyed my stay.

We have just returned from the Iberostar Paraiso Maya in the Mayan Riviera. We have previously stayed at the Barcelo Caribe a couple of times. I thought it might be best to give my Iberostar review by comparing these two resorts as they are often equally priced and many wonder about the differences and similarities. So here goes... (SPOILER ALERT: Iberostar wins by a hair!) Firstly, let me say that I stayed at the IB Maya which is the premium property of the Iberostar (not including the adults only “Grand”). I did not stay in the Palace which is the Premium property of the Barcelo so I therefore might not exactly be comparing apples to apples. LOCATION: The Barcelo is much closer to Tulum than the IB and is about ten minutes closer to Playa del Carmen. Also, there are a few cenotes right across the street which you can access from the resort without needing to do an excursion or plan a day around. However, the Iberostar is closer to the airport by about 30 minutes so, if you are planning to stay at the resort, the advantages of the Barcelo are moot. BEACH: Both beaches have their advantages. If you like to take long walks on the beach, the Iberostar is a better option as you can walk south for miles in bare feet (you need to navigate around some rocks but it is easy-peasy). Also, the lounge chairs on the Iberostar beach all had palapas for shade. The Barcelo really doesn’t have any shade at all (from what I recall). The Barcelo’s beach is steps away from the pools so you can sit at the pool and see the ocean and hop back and forth easily. The beach is quite a walk from the pools of the Iberostar so it’s kind of an either/or choice. Some of the a la cartes at the Barcelo also are on the beach so offer a nice dining experience. There is snorkeling off the beach at the Palace end of the Barcelo where you can literally wade in and spot turtles and colourful fish. Both beaches have a boardwalk, but the boardwalk at the Barcelo is a distinct boardwalk that is direct and lit at night and makes for a lovely long stroll from one property to the next along the beach. Deciding which is the “better” beach really comes down to personal choice—you need to look at the above and see what is more important for your specific needs. AMENITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT: We don’t have young children but were told that the Kids’ Club at The Iberostar was reason enough for many parents to book the Iberostar. Also, they have waterslides, a wave pool and a lazy river that are all included with your stay at the Maya or Lindo. (I believe you can pay extra if you stay at the Iberostar Beach or Del Mar properties). At The Barcelo, there are waterslides, a surf-rider, zipline, bowling alley, mini-golf and a mini-amusement park with roller coaster and other amenities. (There is also a dolphin enclosure at The Barcelo where you can swim with dolphins, but I’m against the principle of these enclosures—they make me sad.) All of these amenities, however, were for a surcharge. In terms of the stage shows, we saw a couple of them at the Barcelo and found them to be quite amateurish. We actually enjoyed the shows we saw at the Iberostar. Plus, they had an 8:45 pm and 10:00 p.m. showing—which accommodates both the early-to-bedders and the night owls! GROUNDS: The grounds of both hotels are quite nice. The grounds of the Barcelo are lovely and tastefully manicured. The Iberostar has the feeling of being surrounded by nature and has many animals roaming about. At any time, you can spot a gang of Coatis (a raccoon-like creature), peacocks, flamingos and a giant rat/rabbit animal with no tail. There are also a few cats that have adopted the hotel as home. So, if you or your kids have a fear of animals, the Iberostar probably isn’t a good choice. (Although I do recall there being a few iguanas on the Barcelo property but you can outrun them! LOL) Meanwhile, you can literally walk the entire Barcelo property under cover (of course, you need to know how to navigate the large property). The Iberostar also has much of its walkways under cover, but you do need to subject yourself to the elements a bit more. Really not an issue. The major issue on walkability around the Iberostar is it is SLIPPERY AS HECK. The humidity made the floors both inside and outside of the buildings very slippery. And when it rained…watch out! My husband and I both had a few nasty slips. However, there is transportation all over the Iberostar if you don’t want to walk. The Barcelo transportation is a double decker bus and, although it takes you between the properties, there isn’t really any transportation within each property (from my recollection). We walked everywhere so I’m not really the best to comment on the transportation. FOOD: I think the Iberostar wins in this comparison but, again, take note that we stayed and ate at the premium property. It’s possible that the Palace at the Barcelo might be more comparable. The food at the breakfast buffet at the Iberostar was amazing. The choice of fruit alone would cause me to return. You name it…the Iberostar had blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, apples…and too many more to name. They also had many gluten free options and I found that their desserts were much better. Oh…and they had churros for breakfast! Lol. The desserts at the Barcelo all seemed bland and had the same texture. Don’t get me wrong—the food at the Barcelo is good…but Iberostar was just a step up in my opinion. Also, we found that almost all of the a la cartes at the Barcelo had a buffet component. For example, you had to serve yourself from the salad bar or the antipasto bar. Every course was table service at the Iberostar a la cartes. Now…in all fairness…this might have changed at the Barcelo since Covid. Lastly, hubby really liked the fact that the Iberostar does not require men to wear long pants and closed shoes at the a la cartes. It seemed less formal. MISCELLANEOUS: Other things I liked or didn’t… The Iberostar lobbies are heavily fragranced. My husband thought it smelled lovely but I was choking on the fragrance. If you have any sensitivities to aromas, you might want to think twice. I found it really bothersome. The Iberostar also has water filling stations all over the properties and the room buildings. That was a great touch. I think the shopping was a bit better at the Barcelo, but we don’t really shop when we go to Mexico. They did have a small ‘mall’ at the Iberostar, but it basically was a couple of souvenir shops and jewelry shops. It did, however, have a great taco shop as well as a creperie and Starbucks-type coffee shop which were all included in the price of the stay. It was a nice little “outing”, especially on a rainy day. IN CONCLUSION…I think that, for us, we may be more likely to book the Iberostar, dollars to donuts. However, both of these hotels are very comparable and I don’t think either would be a disappointment! I would like to give a shout-out to Vanessa, a hostess at a few of the a la carte restaurants who always had a smile on her face! As well, we noticed one of the maintenance guys at our building (62), Alex, was always working really hard…he seemed to go above and beyond. BTW…our room No. 6231 was great. It had a lovely wrap-around balcony with a hammock swing! Not much of a view—just jungle all around—but very quiet and relaxing!

Stayed for a week in mid November. The only complaint was the weather as we had a few days of heavy rain. All staff are fantastic. Fully masked if that is important to you, and always willing to help. The resort is big, but not overwhelming. About a 7 minute walk from the front lobby to the beach with the pool and theatre in between. Lots of activities going on during the day at the pool and beach. We mostly hung around by the pool, close to the towel exchange hut which was where the action was. The food was excellent with lots of selection. Would recommend the steakhouse (ribs were excellent) , Japanese (table side grill), Italian (get the lasagna). Make your bookings early. The wings in the sports bar are very good. Try a mango margarita at one of the bars. The entertainment was very good. There was a new show every night. The best was the Queen tribute, which had two very good singers. The shows repeat twice per night to accommodate late diners.

We spent 10 days at the Maya. Although we had a few complaints about house keeping services we understood they were short staffed and doing their best. We had the best service in the members area from Neri Isidoro. She was friendly, attentive and the best server we have ever had at any of the resorts we have visited. We loved our short chats where we learned so much about Mexico and a few new words in Spanish. Isaac from the members area was great as well. He always had a smile on his face when greeting us. He answered all our questions and never missed a beat when we needed him. The service from the bartender Hugo Contrereas was fantastic! Another smiling and welcoming face. He definitely knows how to mix a good drink. Thank you all for making our stay wonderful. We will be back and hope to see all of your beautiful smiles again. We give the members area staff a 5/5
