My family and I stayed here whilst in Melmerby for a family wedding weekend and were thrilled to discover that we'd found a delightful place to recover from all the celebrations!
Ann and her husband welcomed us with tea and freshly baked scones and we sat in the very pretty garden and chatted away.
My room was a twin room with a separate bathroom and toilet. The bedroom was very pretty, quiet, lovely linen and very comfortable. It was well equipped with a tea tray and biscuits, a hairdryer, a TV and loads of magazines, large bath towel and a smaller one. The bathroom had a good shower, loads of soaps, shampoo, bath hats and absolutely spotless. The only thing that was missing was a plug for a bath (sorry, Ann, I forgot to tell you about this!) Free wifi was also provided.
The rest of my family stayed in a very attractive large ensuite double bedroom and a single bedroom which was perfect for the youngster!
Breakfast was brilliant! A choice of cereals, fresh strawberries, yoghurt, freshly made coffee/tea, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, black pudding, sausages, bacon (all local), eggs (poached or fried), mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, hash browns, toast. All really well cooked and not a sign of grease anywhere!
All in all this was a great stay and they made us feel like part of the family. When we returned home in the evening, the pretty garden was lit up like a Greek taverna, absolutely smashing! A very pretty place. We will be back.

After cycling for over 65 miles in the pouring rain on our first day of doing the C2C we arrived at The Gate House to the warmest of welcomes by Ann and Danny (even got a lovely cuddle which is what i needed) we were shown to our beautiful clean rooms which had lovely soft robes for after our shower/bath, it felt like being at home we never bothered to get dressed just leaving the robes on while we went and had a lovely hot cuppa and biscuits/cakes. Ann and Danny even collected our wet clothes and washed and dryed them for the next day (even our shoes) nothing was too much trouble. The rooms and beds where just perfect and after a fantastic nights sleep breakfast was a welcoming sight with so much choice even catering for my friends vegan and Gluten free dietary requirements. Such a lovely friendly couple Danny even asked i we needed our tyres pumped up before we left. Will definately stay here again.

We cannot praise this bed and breakfast highly enough. Very comfortable room with nice decor. The hosts were wonderful taking care to make our stay really special. For example, we were welcomed with delicious lemon drizzle cake and tea. The village pub was closed when we arrived and the hosts dropped us over at the next village for dinner and picked us up again. Breakfast was delicious too. Just fabulous all round!

What a place! I arrived to be met with the warmest of welcomes by Ann and Danny. I had just finished a walking route across the moors and was tired but delighted with the offering; superb hot shower, the comfiest of rooms with free wifi and TV, and a warm scone and pot of tea when I felt a bit more human!
Ann and Danny strike that perfect balance of being friendly and welcoming but also giving you your own space.
Beds were superb, bedding was beautiful, shower was better than my own and I would have taken it home with me if I could have done, 100% clean, gorgeous decor, and the breakfast was superb.
There's an amazing pub (The Shepherds Inn) a few steps away with a fantastic food offering at very reasonable prices. It is NOT closed down, as suggested on TripAdvisor - if in doubt just drop a line to Ann for reassurance.
Overall - a brilliant place to stay - highly recommended. An excellent base for cyclists (Ann and Danny have an inside secure area for bikes, etc) and walkers and tourists alike. You won't be disappointed.

What a lovely reception we received from Ann after an 80 mile cycle from Settle. Gate House is such a friendly and welcoming house.
The standard of the accommodation and the quality of the breakfasts is at the top of a long list of B&B's we have stayed at over many years.
Will definitely be returning to enjoy the hospitality again.

Penrith to Melmerby is very up and down. We arrived after a long tiring day and were greeted like family. Warm scones and tea. Very comfortable accommodation. Fresh flowers in the room. Lots of local knowledge from Ann. Made sure we took an umbrella so we didn't get wet going to the pub for dinner. The bikes were kept indoors and secure overnight. Great brekky with huge bowl of fresh raspberries.
Even offered to pump up the tyres in the morning!
Highly recommended. Just what you need before tackling Hartside!
