I invited nine of my family, wife, children, husbands and grandchildren for a 3 night weekend break at the George booking five rooms to celebrate my 70th birthday. On arrival each room had a complimentary bottle of wine which was a lovely gesture. With the difference in ages, 20's to 70's , it could have been difficult to keep us...

Although the hotel is very dated and in need of extensive modernisation, it is a relaxing, clean and friendly place to stay. Staff are excellent, with customer service obviously a top priority for this hotel chain. Breakfast is of high-standard with plenty of variety and cooked to perfection! The additional use of gym and swimming pool is a great extra,...

We stayed in room 220. This seemed to be the run down part of the hotel. The bathroom was clean but very grotty. The flat sheet for our bed didn't fit and again it was all clean but just run down. I wouldn't reccomend and would not stay again

I love the saying "You get what you pay for" it often makes me feel better about things if I've bought on the cheap. Unfortunately, this is far from the case with this hotel, as we certainly paid well over the odds for a horrible room - seriously, I've stayed in nicer hostels for 1/3 of the price. First Impressions...

As other reviews have said hotel a little tired, but has a character not found in your chain hotels. Room good, bathroom in need of a little tlc, but everything worked and was clean. Food and service in resteraunt very good. Pool building needs some work, but again pool itself fine. All in all an enjoyable stay, odd niggles do...

this is another coast and county hotel where you can go either BB or HB for few nights, It is by the river with character to compliment as an older building in need for further refurbishment , although most rooms have been upgraded and having all what you need including tea and coffee making facilities. Booked as a stop gap to Edinburgh....... lovely setting overlooking the river with arch span Bridge......The hotel itself is need of updating, the corridors smell heavily of tobacco smoke, the bar is small and had no atmosphere...... We always book a hotel that advertises pool/gym etc...... The photos on the website looked ok, in reality the "Spa" is in urgent...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am confused about the comment regarding the corridors smelling of tobacco as we are a non smoking hotel and I have never come accross this before. I do apologise that the leisure facilities were not up to your expectations, I shall investigate into why the issue in the restaurant...

We were group of friends with 6 twin rooms, upgraded to standard plus, extra cost £20 per person in total for 4 nights, well worth it as rooms had been updated. All rooms were nicely decorated, some were larger than others, or had better views but they were all pleasant and very clean. We appreciated that a large table had...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Set in a beautiful river front location, just five miles from the market town of Hexham, the George at Chollerford is a historic building dating back to the 1700's renowned for its fine food and hospitality. It is great to have such a history behind the hotel as we feel we are doing an excellent job of keeping the tradition going, but we have also spent a lot of money upgrading a number of facilities in the hotel including the leisure club, with its swimming pool and gym, situated west of Newcastle we are in ideal spot for walkers, history buffs and gardeners alike - you will be spoilt for choice. The hotel is a perfect retreat in a location that we consider to be one of the most relaxing in Northumbria. ... more   less
