This would have to be the worst meal we have ever had in New Zealand, as other reviews have said everything is definitely frozen This is our second visit to Punakaiki . Punakaiki is an amazing place' a must visit location if visiting the South Island . We have dined here on our last holiday to the South Island ....

We stayed for two nights on the 27th and 28th December. We chose The Punakiki Tavern and Motels as being away from the main Touristy area. The motel unit was absolutely perfect for us as all we were needing was somewhere to zzzzz and coffee etc. in the morning. Pricewise was pretty much spot on (especially compared to other places...

Stayed one night in October, the motel unit was clean but quite expensive, we ordered a main evening meal at the restaurant my wife ordered fish & chips which consisted of a frozen triangle fillet the type you buy at a supermarket with chips of a similar type $21. I ordered bangers & mash thinking I may get a local...

Really nice coffee and a peaceful garden out the back with stunning views and koi carp in the pond. Good parking not too far off the beaten track. Nice dark beer happy staff. Family friendly and the food caters for little ones.

We stayed in a family room which was adequate but tiny! Queen bed and bunks right alongside. Room itself was $140 which seemed reasonable but $25 per child seemed excessive when there's no room in the unit to actually do anything. So $190 seemed expensive for what the room offered. There was one t-spoon (for making a cup of tea...

First thing to say is this place is in the middle of nowhere. The nearest supermarket/ convenience store is 40km away! Our unit was slightly larger than normal being a triple, but that really was where the benefits ended. The only facilities provided is a kettle. You have to ask for a hairdryer and wifi is available for free only...

The room was on the small side with a double and a single bed. The bed was very soft, which did not bode for a good night's sleep. The shower was ok, although you have to ask for a hair dryer in the tavern as there is none in the room. Bathroom amenities were very modest. Breakfast is not included...

Travelling north on the west coast I became aware that accomodation was limited; many tourists had headed west due to the earthquake. Several places had the 'no vacancies' sign up Suddenly I came across the Punakaiki Hotel. I was greeted warmly by a gentleman and advised that a room was available at half the price quoted by the 'resort' up...

I met Lorraine the owner and she was a lovely lady and we talked about something we had in common. Her staff were also very friendly. I have eaten here 3 times and the food is lovely. I love the decor of the tavern and even nicer with the roaring fire going!!

Review of the tavern itself. Punakaiki is remote, and this is one of only 3 dining options within an hour's drive. The Tavern takes full advantage of this almost hostage-esque dynamic, serving poor quality food at high prices to its desperate, captive audience. Tables were dirty (complete with washcloth centerpieces - that was a first), and service was spotty. We...
