We spent 9 nights at The Contessa in Main Beach and loved every moment. The location is excellent. A flat walk to all the restaurants and cafes and such a variety. Close to the theme parks and other holiday activities. The outdoor pool is huge, plenty of room for all and the outside spa is magic. The indoor pool and spa are equally great. We were in room 263 26th floor). It was clean and so comfortable: very homely with some nice touches. The view from both bedrooms and dining and family area was unbelievable. The sunrises and sunsets were awe inspiring. Parking is plentiful and packing and unpacking was easy due to the trolleys left in the garage. I think they have thought of everything to make a holiday relaxing and memorable. The beach is right there about a 3 minute walk. In the afternoons we walked around the waterway and park opposite the apartment. Just so much to do. However, if you do not want to be active then The Contessa is perfect for that too. We will be back!

This is a dated but nice block of apartments. Short walk to Tedder Avenue with cafes and restaurants. Common facilities are well maintained. Lifts are old and a bit slow but fine - it is an old block.

DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 1901.

The apartments are privately owned but centrally leased. The owners of 1901 have not maintained the apartment like others (we had friends in others which were well maintained).

The beds were nice and comfortable but basic things didn’t work or didn’t work well. The oven was completely broken, the air conditioning was broken, the Austar (Foxtel) was broken, the curtains were broken, the shower door was broken, the ensuite door was broken. There were almost no drinking glasses (there were no wine glasses), no toilet paper was provided and more.

All the appliances are the cheapest of the cheap rubbish brands which function poorly (think Kogan).

This room has no place being charged out at the same rate as rooms our friends were in (all described as superior).

Rooms are spacious but very dated. Aircon only in living room, fan in bedrooms. Bathrooms are very old & not cleaned properly (lot of mould in shower & fixtures broken) key needed to go anywhere in hotel which is good for security. Alot of people permanently live In building. Parking is very tight, but undercover.

Unfortunately our apartment was terrible! On arrival we were met with a smelly apartment that was in need of a major upgrade. It was depressing and the furnishings were old and very dated and the lighting was awful! The beds were terribly uncomfortable and the two in the second bedroom were too small for adults! The master bedroom was hideous, no other word describes it!
There was only air conditioning in the living area and not in the bedrooms. It was impossible to sleep in the one bedroom so we had to sleep in the lounge.
When paying top dollar for a high floor Superior apartment, it was unacceptable to have such a dated and tired room! A real disppointment for our whole family and it certainly affected our holiday.
I won't be returning and wish I had read other reviews before booking, especially about hit and miss apartments. For Main Beach, The Contessa falls along way short in comparison to other resorts in which we've stayed but still has similar prices.
The only saving grace was the pools which were lovely.

Response from Peter Cosford, General Manager at Contessa Holiday Apartments
Responded 8 Feb 2021
Good afternoon, we are sorry that we are unable to accommodate you for your sons 18th birthday in December, however, if there is a Contessa apartment available to book online, it is not one that we manage. Contessa has other privately managed apartments that rent holiday units out of this building as well as the ones we manage. Unfortunately, we were recently forced to cancel a number of direct and agent bookings due to a loss of apartments that have either sold or have become lock-ups due to Covid. We act on behalf of the owners and it is out of our control if units are sold or locked up. As soon as we found out the units were no longer available to holiday let we notified all our guests immediately so they would have the maximum amount of time to secure alternative accommodation, in your instance 11 months. Once again we are sorry for this unfortunate situation that has occurred due to circumstances beyond our control, and hope you are able to secure alternative accommodation for your sons celebration.

This is our fourth time holidaying at The Contessa. Each time seems to get better and better. The location is fantastic: just a short walk to so many wonderful eateries, light rail and buses. The Contessa holiday apartments are amazing. The complex has a huge outdoor water pool and a large spa and magnificent gardens: great spot for the kids to play as well as a tennis court. There is also an indoor pool and spa downstairs inside the complex. Next to those facilities is a timber deck overlooking the inland waterways and a lovely spot for a picnic close to home. The gym is right there too. The beach is only a stroll away. We love apartment 263, it is especially homely with some lovely touches and well equipped. There are panoramic water views to help relax and unwind. The building manager William is on site for your questions and always keen to assist. Simply magic. We will be returning in2025.

Great location and apartments are large. However, the on-site manager is very unfriendly. Two phone calls for assistance resulted in no help whatsoever. Refused to listen to request and after being told to be quiet and shushed he proceeded to yell when I was speaking. This happened on both phone calls. We booked two units. Told they were the best appartments. One unit had a broken toilet in the ensuite. $295 a night for a broken toilet, a door that wouldn’t open and a tv that didn’t work. With an on-site manager who refuses to help when it is after hours! After being guests here for the past four years we will no longer bother. Very disappointing.

If you're going to stay here, it might be worthwhile asking for an actual picture of the apartment you'll be staying in after the booking is made because ours was nothing like the pictures advertised. The decor was dated and I could have sworn the apartment hadn't been used in at least 6 months as it was so dirty. Apparently no effort had even been made to clean up prior to our arrival ..cobwebs on fan, mold on fridge ice block dispenser and bathrooms...I could go on! The manager did her best to attend to our complaints and resolve them but ...our 3-bedroom executive apartment was an utter shock and really disappointing for the price. I booked on behalf of two families and the holiday was nearly ruined because we were all so disappointed at the quality of the accommodation. You just don't expect this from any self-respecting hotel. I have paid less for apartments that were way cleaner than this one.

First off a word about many hotels on the Gold Coast: Many of them are self contained and individually owned and as such each room is furnished by the individual owner meaning the level will vary to a certain degree. So this review is only for the room I stayed in.

Room Type: Executive 3 bedroom.
Somewhat old. It had everything you will need for your stay - Hair dryers, cooking utensils, Cable TV, glasses etc. It was very well catered in that respect. It was also very large. Larger than I expected. So a family of 5 or 6 would fit easily into this place.

Air conditioning: average-poor. One solitary AC for a place this big is disappointing. The master bedroom is quite a distance from the AC and it needs to be constantly on if it's a hot day. each room had ceiling fans so that helped.

Location: Very, very Good. 10min walk to Surf Club. 5 min to Tedder Avenue and 2-3min to a patrolled beach. It's also in a quiet area, yet convenient.

Amenities: Very Good. Indoor and Outdoor pools and spas, gym, tennis court.

Balcony: Great. Wide with plenty of room with good views.

Cleanliness: Disgusting. The overall cleanliness of the complex was excellent, but our room was absolutely terrible. There were massive amounts of dust everywhere. The vacuum cleaner wouldn't work properly even after emptying it. The carpets weren't very clean, there was a lot of stuff under the sofas. The air conditioner was absolutely filthy. The list could go on. I personally think the owner needs to get a proper cleaner in to service this unit because it's simply not up to standard.

FYI: NO free wifi. You can rent it at around 10 dollars per day but it has a limit of 500mb and is only 3G, so it's exceedingly slow and painful. IF you need to conduct business or have anything important to do, don't stay here unless you have your own mobile wifi device. I'm putting this info here in the hopes that the front desk lady might read it and allow her to understand it better in case others ask about it.

Trouble: So much... Our fridge was broken. The fan in the master bedroom didn't work. The Cable TV didn't work. The bedding configuration was incorrect. The good thing is management were on it in a flash. The did their best to rectify the situation as fast as possible in a very friendly manner. I commend them on that and thank them for doing so. In reference to the bedding and other problems, we were given some cots, but they were of such poor quality that they were unusable. One of them was impossible to use as the mattress seemed broken and the other had such a thin mattress on it that anybody over 40kgs may as well have slept on the sofa. Which is what some of us did instead. Luckily the sofa was huge and easily fit two people sleeping on it.

Management: It is managed by an older onsite couple who are friendly - especially the husband who was extremely helpful. He tried really hard to make sure all the trouble we had was minimised.

Again, this is just the room my friends and I stayed in. Another room could be totally different. I'm sure the managers know which room I'm writing about and I hope they and the owners can rectify the cleanliness issues as this was in the peak season and should have been better cleaned.
