Altamira probably has one of the best views of any hotel in Mazunte. The service was excellent. The included breakfast was delicious. Our room was clean and air conditioned but probably could have used some kind of decoration. BE PREPARED TO WALK. The view is amazing because this hotel is at the top of a hill. It is probably about 800m from the street up a hill as well as up the stairs on the other side from the beach. I really enjoyed our stay at Altamira but I regret not renting some kind of vehicle.

My wife and I stayed four nights at the Alta Mira in December of 2003 and I came away with mixed feelings about the place. We had reserved a room months ahead and had the confirmation with us. On our arrival, the staff were much more interested in wanting to see the proof of our reservation than they were in showing us to our cabin. We stayed in number 3, which is located high above the beach, with a terrific view. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable and had a mosquito net. The reclining chairs on our veranda, which is where we tended to hang out while we were at the hotel, were painful to sit on for more than a few minutes at a time because of the wide spacing of their slats. They needed cushions, so I eventually took to using the pillow from the bed. Our room was cleaned daily, including a change of linens. We only ate at the hotel's restaurant once, so I can't really comment on that, except to say the places on the beach are a little cheaper. Probably the main thing I would want to know if I were considering staying here is that there was, at the time of our stay, a noticable smell of sewage near the cabins located on the lower end of the property. We were at the upper end, so it didn't really affect us, but I was glad we weren't down low. The Alta Mira, in case you haven't figured it out yet, is on a hillside, with access to the beach provided by a steep path. The view is spectacular, especially the sunrise. I rated the Alta Mira above average because it so much better than most of the other places in Mazunte. If you are considering staying there, it is worth the extra money to get one of their better cabins. All in all, we did very much enjoy our stay. Next trip I am going to try El Copal, on the next beach over from the headland by the Alta Mira. We ate supper at El Copal two evenings and they have the best view of the sunset we found, along with four cabins with solar electricity and outdoor showers - very unique. No swimming on that beach, though, because of the strong riptides. Happy trails!

I arrived in Mazunte having been staying at nearby Playa Ventanilla. The Alta Mira bungalows are simple, clean and unpretentious and they are still the best in the area. The prices for meals and drinks are about double that of the beach or in town, but that is always the way in hotels or hostels in my experience. It is no real effort to get out and about provided you are good on your legs due to the steep hill or cliffside steps, whichever route you choose they are both up!
I had no problems with smell and the staff, especially Conchita the owner was extremely pleasant and helpful. Dont go expecting the Ritz, expect humbe but clean with great views and totally unfussy.

Just back from a trip to Oaxaca. We had high hopes for our 3-day stay at the Alta Mira Bungalows, having heard great reviews from various friends, but sadly were disappointed with our experience. Yes - the rooms up high have incredible views, and you can wake every morning to the sunrise streaming through the window. But the accomodations are very run down (mold in bathrooms, broken slats on doors with no screens, etc). The most upsetting factor was that we were plague by the stench of raw sewage that was emanating from the hotel's maintenance-deprive sewage system. We tried to remedy the problem by moving up the hill to cabin 5 (just below the topmost bungalow), but that didn't help. If you are seriously considering staying there, be sure to ask about how recently the sewage system has been emptied. It was really sickening - we had to sleep on the porch for our last night because our room smelled so revolting.
ALSO! At the time of our departure we were presented with a bill that did not reflect that we paid our $50 (US dollar) deposit (which would cover one night). When I reminded the manager that I had paid her this on the second morning of our stay, she denied having received it. After a long dialogue (that took place in front of several guests) she reluctantly "agreed" to deduct the $50. We were very saddened by having to deal with this sort of unprofessionalism at a place that has been given the gold star by all the guide books. It's clear that the owners of the hotel are no longer invested in keeping the hotel up to the standards of its reputation.

The Alta Mira is one of the best accomodations in the Mazunte area.
Part of the charm is the absence of electricity - bring a flashlight.
The rooms are a series of bungalows perched on a steep hill. Our bungalow was very spacious with a huge covered balcony overlooking the ocean. You can actually sit up in bed and watch the sun come up over the ocean. There is a point that juts out into the sea here that you can hike out to catch a stunning sunset. One very large plus for us was that they serve both breakfast and dinner in an open air dining room with a breathtaking view. The beach here is also one of the best in the area - beautiful golden sand with an occasional wave big enough to body serf. Suitable for children. We will be going back.

having read several reviews about the Altamire, it seems to confirm that we are not only people there who have been treated with extreme hostility. Nothing that was agreed previously, worked out. For the last night, they even trasferred us to the family's other hotel in a nearly town as it seemed that more important people arrived.
It did not help to explain that it was our wedding day and I wanted to present a small gift in this beautiful and intimate setting. We were thrown out despite reservation.
Avoid this place, there must be something else with less unpleasent hassle.

first we had a reservation in altamira, it was 4 months ago we did it and when we arrive there, once you arrive to mazunte you are always really tired, because of the incredible hot temparature. when we arrive in altamira they said they didnt know our reservation and in a very unpleasant way they told us to go somewhere else, then luckily we arrive to el copal , wich is in the other beach of mazunte, called mermejita, this is a completely lonesome 1 kilometer beach black and white sand.
we stayed 1 week in el copal and it was what we were looking for, the people who work in there is happy with their life, the cabañas are perfect all with seasight , solar electrictyand the sun goes down in the line of the sea horizon while you take a creamy delicious frapuccino
really El copal 10 altamira 1
in mazunte beach theres a lot of people while in el copal beach theres noone is strange that people dont look a little more , so if you go to mazunte walk a little more to look for your accomodation and be rewarded
happy holidays

The photos do sort of show what it is like, but dont show the cockroaches, ants, the holes in the mosquito nets, the gross beds, the rude staff or the poor facilities. Nor do they make it clear that they are perched on the top of a hill with access to the beach by only by going down the steep access way.
I left (despite having pre paid) without staying a night.

Truely spectacular views spoil the sad reality. I got their most expensive cabana with the best view - what a steal I thought. I got bitten every night by bedbugs. The view was so great that I stayed; I just won't go back.
Previous night I had stayed at their sister hotel in Puerto Angel "Buena Vista", and got bedbugs there too.

We were booked to stay in Alta Mira two nights but only ended up staying one night because we were pretty grossed out by the place. When we first arrived, a really nice woman who works there showed us a room in a building with a few other rooms. Even with all the windows open it was, cavernous, dark, dingy (the bathroom was really gross), and it was next to a construction site (they seemed to be building more rooms) that was really messy and made the view not-so-nice. So, we asked if there were any other, nicer rooms, and she showed us to an individual cabana that, upon first glance, was much more charming. It had it's own porch with chairs and a hammock, and a great view of the ocean. However, inside, it was really dirty. There were lots of dead bugs everywhere, the shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages, there was tons of bat poop, and, to top things off, a rat ran across the floor of our room. The sheets were really scratchy and the bed not comfortable. There is a very rocky, very steep pathyway directly down to the beach that seemed dangerous (both crime-wise and walking-wise). The restaurant is very cute and has an amazing view of the ocean (we didn't eat there - only had coffee in the morning), but that's about the only positive thing we can say about this place. We were desperate to leave and wouldn't recommend it.
