We went in December 2021. A Saga holiday. We had a fabulous time. One of the best views we’ve had from a hotel room. Room 215. The rooms DO NOT have kettles or tea/coffee facilities. Outside of breakfast and before 11am you have to buy beverages. The Saga Rep was the best she helped everyone. Especially during these troubled times of COVID. We were kept very safe and weekly tests. Our locator form was made easy to complete our pre flight fit to fly test couldn’t have been easier. One of our best holidays to date. The hotel was kept clean and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The bathroom seemed very dark and they changed the bulb. No problem after that. Shame the bathrooms don’t have walk in showers. Bathrooms could be updated. The swimming pool outside and in are very pleasant but again some maintenance is needed then good as new. Spent quite a few hours in both areas. The free shuttle bus is a plus for saga customers. (Not sure if available for other guests) The selection of food was very varied and everyone had a good choice. Christmas was made very nice for all of the guests. The all inclusive is great value. If you’re a Walker plenty of walks from the hotel. The old roads are mainly for walking be careful as some are partly blocked some impassable. Lease keep in mind it’s a mountainous area. Not always flat but take the bus up and walk down. The hotel is seen from most places you walk so getting lost isn’t really possible. In the brochure it states only one cafe but this is misleading as in Ponta Delgada their are plenty of cafes, small shops, 3 hairdressers. And the famous Chinese shop which sells loads.

When I first booked this hotel, I was excited. Looked wonderful in photographs, the price and flight times as well as the temperatures, ticked the boxes. Only problem is the location. It’s fine if you’re in retirement age and just want to relax. However I’m pro active and like to explore. The hotel is listed as four star. It’s modern in some respects but in others a little dated and tired. Outside needs a fresh coat of paint. The pool is ideally overlooking the coast and the view of the mountains is spectacular also. Enough sun loungers and even a pitch and put if you fancy a stroll. Not too many kids running riot or Germans putting towels on sun loungers. I did throw two off ha ha ha. There’s an indoor pool and spa, not that I went. Table tennis and billiards as well as a dart board! Unfortunately the surrounding area and neighbourhood is very quiet. No restaurants, bars, just a mini market and a petrol station. Here old men smoke, play cards and drink espresso! The bus service returns no later from the centre after 19:00. A taxi to Funchal (41 km/25 miles) will cost you upwards of 60€! The receptionist in the day was oblivious of the timetable. However the gentleman in the evening was much more informative and helpful. He kindly booked me two excursions and gave me a bus timetable. The wi fi is good, t.v had a good selection of channels and picture quality good. Room service was prompt and the chambermaid was excellent. Restaurant was fine, bar area like a library. No atmosphere at all. I booked just breakfast only as I like to explore in the evenings. Hindsight would of told me to book half board. No beaches in Madeira unfortunately but I covered most of the island with tours, public transport and a cable car. I booked initially for nine days, seven is enough. Would I recommend this hotel? If you hired a car and didn’t want wine with your meal so you could drive? If you wanted to do next to sod all on your holiday and be lethargic then yes. If like me you want to try different restaurants in the evening, enjoy some nightlife and mingle with locals and travellers then no. Entertainment at the hotel is an afterthought.

Whilst no doubting the hotel is located in a very picturesque location, where the North Atlantic meets the mountains. You are in the back and beyond of Madeira. A) the local Rodoeste bus takes 3 hours from the hotel to the capital Funchal for €5 each way cheap as chips, but the catch is you either get the 7.30am or 12.30pm service and share it with sweaty passengers and chickens flapping in cages (of course you change at Sao Vincente) good luck with that. And if you don't love narrow mountain roads don't bother! Views are goof if you do. B) Hire a car- you need one, if you plan to explore the island, from this hotel. C) Taxi's can cost €130 return to/from Funchal from the Hotel... The hotel in general is average certainly not a four star in my opinion. The hotel needs some TLC with tiles missing in both the outside and inside pools, there was a great crack on the bedroom wall in the room (well done the couple who did it) no seriously the hotel is on top of a cliff so you'd expect a little movement. The hotels Air Conditioning does not appear to function in the restaurant and it is considerably hot at times, sweating eating a salad.. (not that I fear Salads). The food is a little same, with not a great choice to be honest. No snacks except cake and biscuits between 1600-1700 no toasties or burgers etc, drinks it seemed were only available at the bars or with your meal, that were inclusive. The place was spotless though, can't fault them with that... BUT unless you hire a car or don't plan to explore, then maybe it might be ok for you.
