Detailed Reviews
My husband and I had been vacationing on Sanibel and happened on North Captiva by accident. After falling in love with the place last year, this year we stayed for the entire month of February. The house was clean, well maintained and well stocked. But best on all it is on the beach, with beautiful views all day and wonderful sounds of rolling water at night. It is paradise. #178 Casa Paradiso
We decided to return next year for the month and booked it while we were there. To our shock the price had gone up over 75%, we checked with the management company NCIC and were told that a new computer program was setting the prices, which is code for blame the computer. We were able to negotiate for a 50% increase which is still BS. I guess they don't want us to continue staying there. The staff for NCIC is pretty helpful, but not consistent on procedures, one telling us we had to pay for more TP and soap and another saying we didn't. When we got there the grill was on it's last legs and needed to be replaced and it was after a few calls, but the new one had no drip pan. I would also recommend that if they are sending maintenance workers to the fix something that they have them call before showing up. We had service workers, working on a ice maker problem (prior renters called in) 4 different times, some times being inconvenient for us when making meals. Guess even paradise has it's issues!

The North Captiva Island Club manages many vacation rentals on the island as well as provides amenities to those renters in its resort. I have stayed in various homes over the last decade for a week in early March.
Love this island: the natural beauty, the lack of cars, the state park, the flora and fauna! But this last stay was marred by a spate of incompetence on the part of the club.
Not able to book 3 of us on the club ferry, I booked us on the Island Girls ferry—but the club doesn’t allow this ferry to dock at the club...so I was told to get off (arrival in afternoon) at the Barnacles wharf and we’d be met by club staff who’d bring us our house golf cart and carry our luggage and groceries to the house. Nope. Even after I called and emailed beforehand to remind/confirm our arrival details to make sure we were met on time.
But no, despite assurances to the contrary, no one was there to meet us. Nor was our cart there. Calls to the office went unanswered and staff from another outfit also tried to reach out to club staff they knew...but no one picked up.
After a frantic hour finally someone arrived with a cart..and fifteen minutes more finally a carrier for our now over warm bags of groceries. That carrier broke down, the kid driving didn’t seem familiar with the place, other people’s luggage were left by the side of the road...while we waited for another carrier cart. Thus groceries and luggage only arrived after a chaotic 2+ hours.
The house itself needs some updating but most frustrating was the poor cleaning: coffee pot, blender, toaster, dishes and glasses had to be washed/scrubbed by us before we could use them. The golf cart for the house was unusable due to a flat tire so we were given an old small cart that was not as easy to drive.
Apologies arrived (many excuses about new management and temp workers) but these do not erase the annoyance and inconvenience especially after paying some extra $800 in fees for service! No refund was offered.
The club itself has also fallen into some disrepair. The pools are nice but the kayaks are now all doubles with broken or terrible seat backs. The life vests are dirty and worn. Almost all staff seem inexperienced and disorganized.
I hope the club management soon improves its capacity to deliver what it promises —at the moment I can’t recommend it.

We spent a lot of time looking at recent reviews and were a bit wary about coming back to the island. We booked white pelican wAtch, 212. It is one of the older properties but has a fabulous location and was recently purchased by a new owner. The house was well furnished and had everything we needed. Lots of indoor and outdoor areas for lounging. The pool and spa worked great. Hopefully the new owner will spruce up the bathrooms, fix rotted trim and repair the pool deck. None of these issues affected our enjoyment.
The club has improved somewhat with more staff and more information provided to renters. They give you the information at the water taxi welcome center so no long lines to check in when you get to the island. There is also an app you download that gives you everything you need. The one thing that is still terrible is the amount of time it takes to get your suitcases and groceries. Plan on bringing a bathing suit in your carry on and bringing a cold drink (or going to the bar). We waited two hours and went out to dinner in our travel clothes.
One more thing. If you are concerned about Covid, skip the welcome center and the crowded bus to the ferry. Get a private boat and pay for your stuff to be hauled to your house. Also there are a few taxi services from the airport that take Covid seriously. Other than the masked boats and fun personnel, the island is mask free and you can stay by your own house.
Over the waterfront was great dining. Mainstay and mangos were not as good. Dining is very expensive and servers and cooks don’t wear masks so decide for yourself.

We stayed at 170 Solitude in mid-February 2021. We loved the location of the home...being on the water and a short walk to the community pool or Barnacles. Unfortunately, when we arrived the home was not ready for rental. The septic alarm was going off when we arrived and we went to the office daily to request service. The first day we were told to use the community bathrooms near the pool as much as possible, to minimize flushing the toilets, minimize showers, laundry and dishes and someone would be out the next day to fix. We did this for FOUR days before someone finally arrived to fix the issue. Also when we arrived, the pool and hot tub were green. A couple of guys came to clean it quickly but we were told that they would be back to do a better job. They did not return and the pool was green for the majority of the week and unusable. The hot tub jets never worked and it never heated up. Another issue with the home was the reverse osmosis system was not functioning, nor was the filtered water and ice maker in the refrigerator working. We had to buy cases of water at $14/case, in order to have drinking water during the week. Also, the 2 golf carts provided did not hold a charge and would leave us stranded all over the island. When they were not being used, they were always plugged in as suggested but they didn’t hold a charge. Furthermore, the foosball table and the air hockey table in the game room didn’t work, which was a huge selling point at this home for our kids. When we arrived, we had to provide a list of items not functioning properly for immediate fix and things that could be addressed after our stay. We provided that list to management as requested but nothing on that list would have been fixed if we did not go down to the office every day. If we wouldn’t have insisted on them fixing the septic, sewage would still be oozing out of the ground. We paid a lot more for this home than the other home we previously rented on North Captiva Island for the upgraded amenities and location, but the up charge was not worth the cost for this home when the septic, water, pool & hot tub, game room, etc... didn’t work for our stay. We truly love staying on North Captiva Island, but we will not go through NCIC in the future if we decide to return.

Very dirty. My family stayed in this same home 7 years ago and nothing changed. Same shower curtain, rugs and bedding. Doesn’t even look like it was washed. Master bath shower curtain covered in mildew. Black mold in air vents. The kitchen utensils were purchased 10 years ago. For an island where most every meal has to be cooked at home, I expect the kitchen to be somewhat stocked with decent supplies. The curtains were caked in dust. The master bed was a king and had queen sheets and comforter on it and the mattress was HORRIBLE. We left a day early because I couldn’t stand to be there one more day. Very disappointed. No one should invest one more dollar in renting this home until the owner invests in cleaning. Pictures on Facebook from 2010 show the exact same furnishings that are there today. Sad and a waste of $5500.

We spent a week at a house with a membership to NCIC. I don’t think I’ll be returning to the island for three reasons, first because of the bugs - the mosquitos and noseeums were incredibly bad, even in our screened in porch. You essentially couldn’t be outside (even with bug spray) starting at dusk. Second was the NCIC club, the kayak rental was nice, but the bikes we rented broke three times and the pool was so disgusting we got out immediately after getting in. It was super hot and had a ton of bugs floating in it. Third, it was a pain to the island and get groceries, and we didn’t feel welcome or that the instructions were clear. There was a mix of people that wanted everyone to chill and relax, a mix of party people making day trips, and a mix of people that just wanted to be mean or take advantage of the tourists. Our management company wasn’t great and restricted food delivery to only through them (40% up charge) and tried to blame us for their bad golf cart. Net/net, we still had a good time, but I won’t return and won’t recommend this island to others. If you are already committed to going, make sure your house has a screened in pool, because you won’t enjoy the NCIC pool. Take advantage of the kayak rentals. Order groceries through Debbie at Fresh Picks or Bryan at Elite. Don’t stay at a Tortuga property, and if you do take pictures of everything in the house before the person checking you in leaves.

This home was misrepresented by its description in many. More about the resort in the next one.
It said this cottage was “like new” there were many areas where repairs must have been done but were simply caulked not painted. The house didn’t lock, ice maker broken and no ice was made when we arrived at 9pm.
The tub in the hall bath would not drain and you stood in inches of water during a shower. Even the toilet paper holder was broken
We reported all of these items upon arrival but nothing was done by the resort.
There were plenty of kitchen items to use. But the crazy cleaning fee along with charging to use old sheets and a handful of towels is crazy. We own a property elsewhere that we rent and don’t charge to use linens and our unit is much larger and our cleaning fee is much less.
May visit the island again but not this home.

North Captiva Island offered an incredible week of relaxation and fun. The beaches (and sunsets) are beautiful and the NCIC resort facilities are clean and in good condition. We found the food at Mango's to be excellent, if somewhat expensive, and the adjacent Boats and Fun office can line up fishing, boat rentals, and ferries for additional activities. Overall, the staff is friendly and helpful.
There were some small details that we wish were better. Our house needed a few minor repairs (a clogged sink, a window that wouldn't open, etc.), and the appliances were older and very loud. Overall though the place was clean and comfortable.
It does pay to communicate with the staff to remind them of certain items. For example, our luggage was not picked up from our house on the day of departure. Fortunately, we noticed it wasn't at the dock and the staff quickly went to pick it up.
Staying on the island does require some meal planning so my advice is to plan ahead and get all that you may need on your way to the island. You can pay for additional baggage which is far cheaper than buying on the island or having another delivery sent while you are on the island.

Due to COVID, our usual Thanksgiving extended family dinner had to be cancelled, and I think I have found a new way to celebrate!
We live locally, and decided to rent a house with another family on North Captiva, and travel there on our boats! We each got our own homes a street apart, ours was 146, The Force.
We rented boat slips, and I think we had the 2 most difficult slips to navigate docking, it would have been helpful to have a dock master there to help. Check in was quick, got our golf cart, and had assistance bringing our belongings to the house.
The house itself was spacious, with an updated and well appointed kitchen, with plenty of dishes, cutlery and pots/pans.
My favorite aspects of the house was the deck and the view, with the breathtaking sunrise, and sunset easily seen over the gulf of Mexico. The exterior of the home and landscaping could use some TLC however, and some loungers around the pool would be a nice touch.
A few negatives...the house did not have a golf cart charger, the next day they brought one that did not work. By the third day we finally got one, but not without the aggravation of loosing charge, having to push the golf cart, and waiting over an hour and calling the main office twice and being put on hold for an inordinate amount of time. They did provide us with a loaner golf cart to use while ours was charging, and we ended keeping it for the rest of our stay, so that was a bonus!
Also, the beach chairs...it says that the house comes with chairs to use, but in reality they need to be checked out from the front office, and are first come first serve. I was told they would bring us the chairs when some were returned, but that did not happen. With our golf cart running low on power and not having a functioning charger for two days, I didn’t want to drive repeatedly to the main office to see if there were any chairs available. How hard would it be to have beach chairs in every home?
Other than the two aggravations described above, we had a wonderful socially distanced thanksgiving weekend. We ordered the Thanksgiving dinner which was delivered hot to our house by a man dressed in a Turkey suit (he must have been so hot!), and it was generous and delicious..we had enough for a second complete meal and then some!
We fished, kayaked, walked the trails and beach, and dined alfresco. Unfortunately their main restaurant, The Boathouse, has been closed since the pandemic, but I was told it will reopen mid December.
North Captiva is a beautiful place, and I will return, but there are a few things that the management company could do to improve the experience.

We had a fantastic time on North Captiva!
Our home was very, very clean, fresh paint, floor tile throughout, many necessary appliances, up dated kitchen, elevator, awesome crows nest view of the gulf and Captiva pass. Great for viewing stars, satellites and meteors - no ambient city lights affecting the view. Gulf waters were clear and warm. Flowed south along the beach in the morning and north in the late afternoon. Just like having your own lazy river right in from of the house.
Club amenities were very nice. Huge pool, bar, store for necessities, kayak and bike usage comes with rental. Boat slips available and extra golf carts available if one cart that comes with home is not enough. The cart came with our rental was not holding a charge. The club replaced it in very short order after calling. Joe delivered all of our gear and groceries to the home very quickly. We all followed him to the home.
A couple of issues that we called about or turned in upon leaving. The resort staff, Tara and Joe in particular, were very receptive to getting our issues resolved quickly and for future guests.
Propane gas grill dated, only three of 5 burners worked, needed to be lit with lighter and only produced low heat. Took forever to cook burgers and hot dogs.
Homes golf cart charger had exposed wires cause from rot / decay. Turned the unit in at office to be replaced or repaired.
Broken coffee table glass in living room - has been this way for many past reviews.
Our cable tv and internet did not work at all. We called the club and they sent support out quickly. He could not resolve this issue because he determined it to be an antenna issue on the roof which was going to take some time to resolve. We needed a working internet and there was no where else on the island that had public internet. We were able to hot spot through our phones via our Verizon account, that saved the day in regards to being able to work online. Hopefully the internet issue can be resolved quickly. Another place on the island for public access should be considered.

There are a few smaller homes on the island. You need to call and see what they have available
There is a fire station that has a first aid kit.
They can be bad at Dawn and dusk. They seem to be worse in the spring/summer/fall. They are not as much of a problem in the wind, so being on the gulfside on the beach won't be as bad as bayside typically. Screened lanai with ceiling fans help, but they are small enough to get through most screens. I wear a natural product called Cactus Juice that works really well for me and my family. You can buy it on Amazon or from their website- google Cactus Juice. It is labeled skin protectant and has an SPF of 20. It is not waterproof. I add Deep Woods Off spray over the Cactus Juice ONLY when I am hiking through vegetation or kayaking in the bay. What month are you visiting? PM me if you have further questions. After 27 years of visiting SW Florida islands I have seemed to develop a tolerance to the bites, but I still do not go out without Cactus Juice at dusk or Dawn.
