Montanema Handmade Village, a surprise lost in a magical forest of the Greek mountains that hide rare myths and traditions, is a destination in itself... Yes, you will enjoy all the facilities you dream of in the stone-built cottages and around... And yes, the local delicacies and wine of "Fournia" restaurant and the cellar experience will steal your heart... But, walking in the forest with the hammocks and the healing herbs, across the river and its waterfall, along the famous Plastira Lake, inhaling the virginity of the Greek Flora, will become a purifying act. This will not be just a trip to the Greek Agrafa Mountains ... This will be the most unexpected trip of your life...

We stayed for a weekend in October with my family. The road at the last very few km was not very good but when we arrived at the establishment we understood that they want to keep it as a hidden gem.

The environment, the lovely decoration, the facilities, the people, the forest, the cleaness and many more make this place unique for relaxation, meditation or a simple voyage through time.

Montanema which is really a village offers a very nice restaurant with homemade ingredients plates and an open to your eyes kitchen. It offers a bar with homemade and not only drinks with unique view and very carefully selected music.

It offers unique activities included at the price that you can rarely find at a winter resort.

The rooms are very comfortable, clean, warm with homemade shampoos and bath products.

There are plenty educating and amusing activities for the kids.

I can't stop describing this unique experience that I lived at Montanema. I must stop in order to be able to find vacancy for my next visit as my description will bring more visitors.

I’m giving a 4 only because there are a couple of things that I think could be done which would easily make this a 5. I’ll start with the excellent points. Views, views, views. Million dollar views for very reasonable prices. All of the rooms are individual apartments and nicely equipped. We loved the balconies and personally I’m a huge fan of big rainfall style shower heads. :) The food is excellent and I highly recommend trying their homemade wines. The staff was wonderful and always ready to help, including giving us recommendations for places to eat when we left the resort. How could they rate 5 stars? Two things. First. The road up from Kerasia is not good. Once you leave pavement it’s very rough and rocky. You can pass on a car, but I was glad we had a Jeep. That’s the road you want to take though. On the other hand, the road up from Anthochori should be marked as a “do not travel” road unless you are an avid off-roader. Even the locals don’t take it, but Google in its infinite wisdom routes it up from there. If you are going that direction, DO NOT follow Google Maps and take the first turn unless you want a real adventure. Go to Kerasia and then up from there. Not a good road but at least passable. Second. Just because it’s not winter, let people use the fireplaces. Even if it’s not super cold at night, it does cool off and the there’s nothing like a fireplace in the mountains to set the mood.

Overall awesome and will definitely go back.

We went to Montanema Hand made village last weekend. We are a family with three kids. We had a two bedroom house with a kitchenette and 2 bathrooms. As we arrived in the house we were amazed by the view, the size of the bedrooms and also one of them was a master bedroom with its own fireplace and bathroom.
The food was of a very high quality, prepared with organic products and as a mother and a person that cooks a lot I could taste and enjoy the freshness of their milk, honey, hand made pasta, local meat, delicious eggs, marmalade for breakfast, home made cake, freshly brewed coffee etc. Really organic products.
They also make their own soap bars and liquid soap/shampoo and when I used them-they smelled lime honey!
The location is right near the forest, the view is breath-taking  and there are various activities for the children and adults such as cookies baking for the little once and guided forest walking tours for big and small enthusiast.
The indoor pool and spa is not allowed for children but the in the outdoor pool in summer everyone is welcome. In general the children are so bizy with the activities that had been organized by the hotel and also my children was playing with the dogs , on the swings, they've visited the little farm on side that the day was gone before we knew it.
One thing potential visitors should keep in mind is the 4km sort of off road before you arrive at the settlement but for us it was a part of the adventure, nothing strenuous, we were perfectly fine with our Nissan X-trail and the children got even mire expected.
I've learned about this hotel from a mother's page on Fb and I highly recommend it to everyone who wish to explore Greece!

An experience in itself. Self contained mountain resort in the middle of nowhere resembling an old-time village. Period accommodation, excellent public areas and very decent restaurant. Activities for all the family (walks, cooking lessons etc). Very good home-made toiletries.

Room for improvement: the individual portions of honey for the tea should either be dropped or changed to a more upscale provider. The currently used Bulgarian honey is prone to crystallisation.

We were lucky to see the place in full snow! Magnificent! We were picked up with a vehicle equipped for such conditions so we didn’t need to risk driving in our own car. The hospitality and the lodge we stayed were wonderful. The massage was out of this world! Definitely recommend it and looking forward to visiting again in spring so we can explore the area and go hiking

If you have a vehicle that is suitable for off road tracks and you are brave enough to navigate the steep ascent up to this village I'm sure it would be a nice place to stay, but we couldn't get up the track to find out.
We booked 3 nights, 24 - 27 September 23, through Hotel.com. We were not advised by this accommodation that we would need an off roading vehicle to get there. So we hired a small car for our trip around northern Greece.
We contacted the accommodation to let them know the time we planned to arrive. Their reply informed us the road from Mouzaki had been closed due to bad weather some weeks before and to travel to Karditsa and then Kerasia where there are signposts to the village.
On the day of this journey we heard that bad storms were coming for the next 4 days, but decided to continued with our holiday there.
We reached Kerasia without problems, but as we drove up towards Montanema parts of the road had collapsed leaving only narrow access to drive along. Then the road stopped and there was only a stone track infront of us. The satnav said we still had 4.5km to go up to reach our destination. We drove on for about another 2km, by which time the car was struggling to negotiate the track surface and the steep ascent. We feared damaging the car, the possibility the car not being able to grip onto the surface and take us down over the edge of the narrow track and a worry the imminent storm due to hit would further damage the only accessible way out. We then decided it wasn't worth the risk and managed to turn the car around and get down the track safely. We also decided to seek alternative accommodation.
We contacted Hotel.com to cancel the booking. They contacted Montanema, who denied the access road is bad and said the policy is no refunds.

We keep returning to this special place. It makes you feel like visiting friends who live in the mountains. It's a beautiful isolated resort. Houses are handmade. Even the soaps are made locally. They grow most of the ingredients of the food they serve. The food is made by house wives who work there - no chef, it's quality control is not 100%, but it is all fresh, most of the time very tasty and always friendly, warm and welcoming. Beautiful guided hikes around the resort. Fun activities to the children. It's our favorite place to always go back to.

A wonderful complex of Greek style stone houses in the middle of a gorge above lake Plastira close to Karditsa, 3 hours (drive) from Athens. The scenery is breath taking. Lovely walks in the forest for all tastes. The rooms/houses are very spacious and comfortable with all details taken care of. The personnel, mainly local people, make you feel at home right from the moment you arrive. Great wine tasting experience. Great massage (you must book in advance) and spa experience. We are definitely going back.
