We stayed at the Hotel Faranchin after the 6th Day of our cycling challenge, ride2monaco. The hotel was great, with amazing scenery all around in the beautiful Hautes-Alpes region. If you are cycling in France, it's well worth a visit.

We cycled from Silverstone to Monaco, taking on the amazing Col du Lautaret after our stay at Hotel Faranchin, and onto the Col d'Izoard, Col du Vars and the immense Col de la Bonette, all within reasonable distance from the hotel! Well worth a visit and the staff could not do enough for us. We will most definately return if we are in the region again.

Thank you Hotel Faranchin.. =)

We stayed here just before new year - we booked last minute on the same day so got a great deal (2 nights for £100).
We didnt eat here at all so cant comment on the food - the room was very basic, toilet, shower, bed and also a balcony. The staff are amazing, so helpful and friendly. i would stay here again.

Top hotel! After a long ride over Galibier this was everything we needed. Bike storage, comfy room with mountain views, amazing dinner in the restaurant with big portions.
The hotel is traditional style and very clean, and the owner was friendly. Highly recommended.

After a long sunny day of watching the Tour de France, I got caught in the post race traffic jam and was late arriving. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed, and TAKE NOTE there is very little else near by to satisfy one's hunger! The staff took pity on me and rustled up the most delicious door stop Ham sandwich I have ever had. this was the first taste of the excellent staff here, they really went the extra mile to make sure the guests were happy.
The food in the restaurant on my second night was quite superb, with a huge selection of delicacies. Despite my almost total lack of ability in the French language, the waiting staff made sure I knew what to expect from each dish, and my palate was extended in the most delightful way by skillful AND friendly chef David (I am still awaiting my chance to return the hospitality when you visit New Zealand!!)
The rooms were VERY basic, but I thought reasonably priced for what they were... great for young families or road-tripping, but wouldn't be first choice for a romantic getaway unless your partner rates food above room (as I do)!!
However I was really there for the cycling, and it is a very pleasant (but rather steep towards the end) ride from here to the summit of Col du Galibier (allow 1-2 hours depending on your fitness). a more challenging ride is to Valloire where there are quite a few lunch options (this took me nearly 5 hours with a lunch break in Valloire). if you are really keen, you could cross the col du telegraph as well, but make sure you start early... remember it is a return trip!!
there are dozens of other (in)famous passes/climbs that can be reached within a solid days ride of Villar D'Arene (even more if you have a car), I also did Alpe D'huez, Col du Glandon, Col de la Croix de Fer all in my 3 days in the area... honestly if you love your bike, you could spend weeks here without riding the same pass twice... and make your way through SOME of Chef Davids menu!!

I used this place as the base for a week's solo skiing in the heaven of La Grave. It's a couple of miles up the road from the ski lift, but it's served by a bus and lifts from the Guides de Montagnes (if you're lucky). The rooms are basic, small, inexpensive and fine for a solo traveller. The restaurant was the highlight, serving a range of really interesting mountain fayre. There is ZERO nightlife in the village, so that's just as well!

An affordable, clean, friendly hotel at a breathtaking location. Rooms maybe a bit small but very clean. Breakfast was very good and more than enough.
Dinner was excellent, great wine!
Love to come back to this place!

Me and my friend lived here for a week with semi-pension during our skiing-holidays. The rooms are simple but clean and what counts is that the location is close to great skiing (La Grave and Serre Chevalier) and randonée. The breakfast and all our dinners were fabulious, the personal extremely friendly. The price is good. It was even snowing. Everything perfect.

Very nice family run hotel near Col Du Lautaret and great hiking and skiing in the Southern Alps of France. The hotel is located near the gondola lift to La Meije in La Grave where you can get up to the glacier and hike or mountain bike. But the best experience of the stay turned out to be a fantastic dinner made by the owner and his team. And served by very friendly staff. Worth a stay, and will be visited again.

I was cycling across Europe in march solo so you really want three things from a hotel, a warm welcome (after talking to yourself all day) , a cosy room with very hot water and great food,I got all three here and really enjoyed my stay.
Really great couple running the hotel with a nice family atmosphere it has a little bar with a couple of good beers and a very good resteraunt. They know the area really well and it would be a great place for an extended hiking or cycling holiday and most important the road from Grenoble is OPEN! ! (I cycled it the day i left) The signs may say it's closed but only to lorries and coaches so for cars no problem !!

I think the Faranchin saved our lives. After our rental car was broken into in Nice, we spent half a day waiting to get the window repaired and arrived in Villar d'Arene in the middle of a thunderstorm about an hour before sunset. We were supposed to hike into the Alps and stay in a refuge - and we were still thinking of trying to pull it off - when we got a flat tire 100 feet from the trailhead. A generous camper offered us some camping gear for the night, but after the day we'd had, we were more prepared to just drive the damn car off a cliff. Instead, the Faranchin came to our rescue. Although they were full to the gills for a hunting festival, they agreed to cobble something together for us, and frankly, we were expecting - and would have appreciated - a closet or a laundry room. Instead, they found us a great room for four that was a sort-of attic alcove with a bathroom in the room (and another down the hall)! Deliriously happy with our good fortune after such a bad day, we stumbled down the stairs to the restaurant, again not expecting much. Instead, we all had truly excellent meals. The next morning, we slept in past breakfast time, and - again, against expectations - David offered to make us a breakfast of ham, eggs, coffee, and toast. We ended up canceling our trip to the refuge and stayed an extra couple nights at the Faranchin, where we had excellent food - meal after meal - and several good nights' sleep. It was easy to hike over to la Grave, where we took the télépherique up the mountain to the glacier, and it was easy to take the bus back. We also loved the botanical gardens, which we hit on the way out after getting our tire fixed. In short, we were coming off a string of bad luck and finding the Faranchin - and the kindness of and generosity of Les Faranchins - turned everything around for us. We are so grateful, and we can't wait to return!
