One of the best hostels in Costa Rica I've been. Clean room, hot showers, nice kitchen and common area, and very helpful reception! I had heard some bad stories about monteverde (hostels kicking you out if you don't book tours with them..!) but this place...More
Stayed in the Pension Santa Elena for three nights after having spent time on the Costa Rican beaches. First impression, it's a very basic building, fitting into the mountain area. Welcome was somehow rough but all informations were given in very good detail.
By far one of the best places we've been to on our trip. Rooms are tidy and clean, private bathroom as well (hot water included).

As the other respondent said, the shuttle is not free, but I can't really imagine it would be as Santa Elena is way up in the mountains. A resort close to the airport could have a free shuttle theoretically, but I never saw any free shuttles really. There are plenty of transportation options for tours and activities. Sometimes the place that you get the tour will send transport or the kind folks at the pension can help arrange things for you.
