Hostel Sloth Backpackers Bed & Breakfast provides a welcoming and comfortable haven for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. My stay here was quite enjoyable, and I'd like to share my thoughts. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, offering great tips for exploring the local area. The communal spaces were inviting, with plenty of opportunities to socialize with fellow travelers. I particularly enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere in the common areas, which made it easy to strike up conversations and make new friends. The rooms were basic but clean, and the beds were comfortable enough for a good night's sleep. While the bathrooms were shared, they were well-maintained and clean. The hostel's location was convenient, with easy access to public transportation and nearby attractions. The breakfast served was simple but filling, providing a good start to the day. It would be great if they could offer a bit more variety in the breakfast menu to cater to different tastes. Overall, Hostel Sloth Backpackers Bed & Breakfast is a great choice for those looking for an affordable and friendly place to stay while exploring the area. It's not a luxury accommodation, but it offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to meet other travelers and share stories and experiences. I would recommend it for budget-conscious adventurers looking for a comfortable and social place to stay.

Sloth is incredible! I will enumerate the ways. 1) Staff - 6/ 5 stars. Mauricio is super kind, seeing him always made my day!! The elegant lady who works here is very nice too. They will go out of their way to help you with anything, whether it's booking excursions or dealing with a matter of stolen money from Extremo Canopy tours (avoid the latter at all costs, see my separate review). 2) Rooms - 4.5/5 stars. Yes the building is a little old but the rooms and bathroom are very clean, and hot water, which is not so common in CR hostels, is included in your stay. 3) Food - 5/5 stars. Buy the breakfast and hostel package; it's worth it! Tours are best experienced in the morning before the weather becomes too hot, and it is so nice to have a platter of healthy and delicious food to eat right outside your room before going on a hike. 4) Noise - 4/5 stars. This is a very quiet and peaceful place, but the passing cars can be noisy. However, I would much prefer to be centrally located while hearing road noise v. being down a remote poorly lit road/ on a hard to climb hill. 5) Location - 5/5 stars. The hostel is located in the central part of town giving you easy access to all the restaurants, grocery stores, banks, and other establishments. 6) Safety - 5/5 stars. Every room is securely locked and no one can enter without a key. Its location also lends additional safety as the area is brightly lit and enjoys a healthy amount of pedestrian traffic. I felt safe walking around alone at night. 7) Value for price - 6/5 stars. Even though I paid for a shared dorm, the staff put me in a room by myself (note that this was possible during the slow season), which not only made me feel very safe as a solo female traveler but also increased my comfort. I thought this was very thoughtful of them as they could have made cleaning easier by putting me in a room with strangers. 8) Only con, not really a con - This is not a party hostel, and it is not a social one either. It was hard to meet people staying at Sloth, but don't let that deter you from booking a stay. I met plenty of traveler friends on excursions, and it was honestly nice to have a quiet place to decompress after a long day of hiking and socializing. Sloth was my first stop during my first solo backpacking trip post pandemic, and I could not have asked for a better experience. As a woman traveling alone in a foreign country where I don't speak the language, I was a little nervous to come to Costa Rica, but I felt very safe and supported at Sloth.

We red a lot of positive reviews of this place, but our experience was horrible. To start, after check-out we discovered bedbug bites. We stayed here for several nights so it’s definitely from this hostel. I send an email to inform the hostel so future backpackers wouldn’t end up in the same situation. The hostel never replied…. Secondly, breakfast is not worth the money and if you want to make your own breakfast, kitchen only opens at 9am. The kitchen is poorly equipped and closes early (according the rules 9pm but they frequently close earlier). You can't even take plastic cups outside. Thirdly, the whole hostel in covered in leaflets with rules. For example if you don't clean your dishes, wifi will be shut down. Or if you don't dry your dishes a $10 fine will be given. And finally, the staff was very rude to us. When closing the kitchen at 20:45, we asked if we could finish our drinks and they replied: 'no, reglas son reglas'. But it wasn't even 9pm. Don't stay here!

I am a solo traveller and my purpose was to visit the parks and enjoy the nature. The staff was really rude. I could not find my mask and instead of offering a private space where I could search my luggage, he told me to open my bag on the floor in front of him. I insisted to be private and they opened the room but refused to give me the key even if I had already paid. He said I was not following the rule for check in and would not give the key until I heard all the instructions for breakfast, making no sense as breakfast is at 7 and I was leaving for 6.30. He almost kicked me out. I spent a horrrible night. The beds are uncomfortable and the door of the room did not close properly. I was scared of the staff.

The room was clean, tidy, and there was hot water in the shower. It was good. However I has the feeling that the staff was very strict. We can't have access to the kitchen before 9 a.m and after 8 p.m. Even the owner saw me asking for him to open the kitchen before 9a.m to take my things, he didn't want to open the door. Moreover, the "free breakfast" is free only if you pay 15$ a night. If you want to do not expensive activities, you shouldn't ask to the staff.
