We visited here after one of our bike rides (we were staying at the nearby Forest Holidays). The Royal Lodge is situated very close to the river and is a great spot to have a pub lunch or dinner. There are plenty of tables outside when the weather is good and the food is exactly what you would expect from...

On arrival the checkin was 2.00, but when we arrived at 3.00 room was still not ready..children waking us at 7.00 in the morning as walls were thin, and bed was uncomfortable due to the length of it, just found it an average hotel. Meals were on the expensive side..wasn't happy with my risotto I ordered as found it bland...

Stayed overnight on good Friday. Staff are really helpful and polite. Food is excellent and massive portions so be warned. The room was really clean. Room and bar area decoration are basic but everything is super clean. Location is fantastic overlooking the river, garden is lovely. Would recommend a stay.

Stayed for two nights as a break with my husband. The location of the hotel is picturesque and also great for scenic walks right in the doorstep of the hotel. The hotel however is in desperate need of upgrading. The public areas are tatty. Our room ( 11 ) was tiny and again in need of updating. This being said...

Stayed here for two nights on a gift voucher, the hotel is in a lovely area and great for walks. I would not rate it has four star, our room 23 was ok but the bathroom was poorly designed, for men who are shaving you have to go from the sink near the window to opposite wall for a mirror not...

We had a voucher for christmas and decided to try somewhere we had not been before and we found this hotel. The setting is fabulous with stunning views of the river. The hotel describes itself as 4 star, however,I am not sure that I agree as our room that was allocated was very small, quite tired & the on suite...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Royal Lodge at Symonds Yat East has an idyllic setting in the heart of the Wye Valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty where the River Wye cuts a swathe through a wooded gorge on the edge of the spectacular Royal Forest of Dean. The Lodge is nestled just below Symonds Yat Rock and stands exclusively in grounds of almost 5 acres overlooking the river. It has terraced gardens of magnolia trees and a well established wisteria. The Royal was originally built in 1876 as a Royal hunting lodge and was converted to a hotel in the 1920's. It has had a full and extensive refurbishment in 2008 and is managed by Graham Howells who has overseen the transformation and ensures that the level of service reflects the new development and idyllic location. The Royal Lodge is a great place to unwind with long relaxing walks in outstanding scenery. The hotel is also well situated to explore the Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the South Wales coast. ... more   less
