This charming boutique hotel brings centuries-old style, history and hospitality luxuriously to life at the highest point of Santorini’s breathtaking volcanic Caldera, in Imerovigli. The restoration project of a Traditional Mansion owned by a family of generations of Captains that began in 1979 established Altana Hotel in 1983 as the first high standard guest house in the area of Imerovigli and certainly among the first on the Santorinian Caldera. This historical building complex dating back over a century, between 1779 and 1883 has been preserved, restored and renovated to meet the highest standards of modern luxury. The 6 apartments and 8 suites at Altana, each unique, blend traditional local architecture and aesthetics with modern amenities that tastefully cater for any true traveler's comfort. A unique sensitivity to detail and restored original objects revive the simple elegance of tradition and pay homage to the history of the mansion. A deeply personal service philosophy offers a unique hospitality experience in a setting surrounded by an endless horizon of blue in a bird’s eye view of the Santorinian Caldera, the Volcano, and the whole of the Southern Aegean Sea, including the neighboring islands. Enjoy a dip under the sun in the highest swimming pool on the island and feel free against the sea breeze. Lose your breath to the vibrant sunrises and mystical sunsets from your private veranda. Relax in your suite’s private Jacuzzi pool or rejuvenate your mind and body with a plethora of massage, yoga, chi-kung and beauty treatments. Enjoy homemade breakfast till noon or experiment with local homemade delicacies, sweets and wine-tasting at ‘Kafeneion’, our preserved cave-house bistro. Sample a world of gastronomy with our cooking lessons, gourmet degustation & private candle-lit dinner experiences, which incorporate our own organically grown produce straight from the volcanic soil of the Altana farm. Savor the atmosphere of relaxation and discovery that will inspire some of the most romantic and exciting moments of your life. Dive into the magic of something old and discover something new...welcome to Altana, let us immerse you into the magic of Santorini.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our family of five traveled to Santorini this past summer and stayed at Altana Heritage Suites based almost entirely on TripAdvisor reviews. Without a doubt, it was worth every penny and perhaps the best accommodations we have experienced throughout the world! Greece is busy in June, but our cave home was a true oasis with an authentic touch. Although the walking path between Oia and Fira was just up the stairs, we could sit on our patio with our plunge pool and just soak in the surroundings. Breakfast delivered to our home each morning was a special touch. The staff were INCREDIBLE! The welcome and introduction to the property and island was very helpful, and they were able to offer us a slightly later check-out due to our boat schedule. We were traveling lightly, so we took advantage of the laundry service, which had a quick turnaround and was delivered, folded in a darling basket. Our home was spacious, well-appointed, and quiet... just perfect! We walked into Fira twice, which was easy, and we visited Oia briefly, but it was very crowded with cruise ship tourists. Without a doubt, Imerovigli is the perfect location for a Santorini visit and Altana is an exceptional choice!

This hotel defined the holiday! Staying in converted wine caves quickly transports you away from your normal routine enabling you to embrace the tranquillity and culture of the island. The caves were furnished for comfort and ease, whilst the terrace with pool provides an extra sense of luxury whilst you observe boats passing by on the most dramatic backdrop of the volcanic island. The staff were phenomenal and not only ensured that we were comfortable (2 adults + 2 kids) but took the time to ensure we could get the most from the island. This stemmed from describing the local cuisine and wine at the hotel to resteraunt to also making recommendations for key places to visit across the island that highlight the essence of the people of Santorini (e.g. archaeology, beaches and the tomato canning factory!). October may be the off season but with such great weather, people and surroundings its definitely worth a trip at this time of year.

I can't say enough about this hotel. Staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was excellent and the views, WOW!! The location in Imerovigli was great as it was a reasonable walk to Fira without the crowds, and there were several fabulous restaurants close by.

Fabulous location and hospitality! We loved our little room but we wish we had booked a hot tub option - was off our budget though. View from here was still amazing and would stay in Imerovigli again. Hiked to Oia and glad we stayed at Altana as way quieter. Pool area was also great and pretty private. Also a good place to watch the photoshoots happening on the walkways. Breakfast served in the balcony daily was a highlight!

Room Tip: Hike early and go to restaurants that don’t necessarily have a view. Better food and cheaper

I would rarely leave feedback but on this occasion it felt it necessary if it would help others to have a break as amazing as we have. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and unlike most hotels in Santorini especially Caldera side we had privacy, most other hotels had jacuzzis/pools that were completely exposed to public and offered no privacy at all so not great for self conscious to even sunbath worth out being in everyone’s photos/selfies. Perfect town for us, it’s the highest point of the island with best view, next to Skaros rock that has a great story and short walk to the capital Fira, we went to Oia for one day while we were there and it was absolutely overwhelmed with tourists from multiple cruise ships. The service was great and the staff could not do enough for us, organised excursions and buggies for us at no extra cost to us. Breakfast had a large selection and at a time that suited us that we ate on the balcony overseeing the Caldera. On the last day the manager sat with us and gave up a couple of hours giving us his knowledge of the island so we can plan our wedding without being ripped off by wedding planners. To finish off the holiday we were unfortunately caught up in the UK air traffic control issues, whilst stuck in the runway we rang Altana and told them the situation and although they did not have a room that evening he rang a neighbouring hotel and arranged a room in case we got stuck that didn’t need to be paid for unless we need les it at a heavily discounted rate to give us peace of mind in the chaos of getting home in case we were stranded. Cannot wait to go back next year. Thank you to everyone at Altana especially Christos, see you soon.

This is the best place to est in Santorini! It has nothing to do with all the other restaurants of the island where the menù is always the same, the food is expensive and the quality very slow. Here you'll find LOVE. You'll be able to taste real greek flavours with a bit of innovation... Surrounded by lovely staff and an amazing view... Once you eat here you'll never be able to eat in other restaurants of Santorini.

We didn't stay in the hotel but stumbled across the bar on our first day in imerovigli and can honestly say that in all our travels across the world this has got to be our favourite!! Traditional Greek Tavern, so pretty, great service and a great view. Would come back to Santorini just to visit this little place! If I could give 10 stars I would!

This is the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed at. The hospitality is exceptional and the rooms are amazing. The hotel is in the town of Imerovigli, which is much less hectic than Oia, but it is near the town of Fira for shopping and dining. Can’t recommend this hotel any more highly.

I found the bar attached to the hotel on a walk from Fira town centre. What a stunning location for a couple of beers before heading back to Fira. Thank you so much to the friendly and funny young lady who taught me how to order beer in various languages, sorry I don't know how to spell your name. Hope you remember the English for beer 😀
