To be clear: if it were not for the magnificent views of the sea and the reasonable room rates when compared to other accommodation in Santorini, I would probably not rate this establishment as "very good", but rather "average". However, given the general high price of any room in Santorini that faces the sea/caldera, it is indeed time to sing the praises of any establishment that offers a clean, budget option.

The owners of Gaby Apartments have two different locations. However, this review is specifically for the apartments with a sea view and located right by the small Greek church with the beautiful blue dome.

Please note that this building contains three levels of rooms...and the rooms become more expensive the higher up you go. If I remember correctly, there are only two rooms on the first level, two rooms on the second level and maybe three or four rooms on the very top level (please verify with the manager).

The first (lowest) level is basically the small front porch of the establishment, where there is also one plastic table and a few chairs. As I said, I think there are two rooms on this level, and either one or both (you will need to verify) have kitchenettes. The small porch also looks out on the sea, but those who use it do not have as much private space or terrace space as those on the upper floors. That said, while I was there in April, I saw an older couple who seemed quite content on the porch and spent a lot of time there reading. You should ask the manager if both rooms on the porch level get use of the table or if it is dedicated to the room closest to it. If you accept the second room on the porch level and table use is not included, you should ask if you are free to use the large terrace on the second level.

My room was a very clean, but extremely basic room on the second level. There was no kitchenette, but a small fridge which was great for storing wine, but could get noisy at times during the night. The bathroom and shower were extremely small, but there was no problem getting clean...I did, however, usually get the bathroom floor soaking wet from the shower (there was no shower curtain at that time). Otherwise, the sheets were immaculately clean, and the room was cleaned well daily. Granted, I had a more comfortable, luxurious bed in a second establishment where I stayed in Fira, but the bed at Gaby's was not old or impossible to sleep in...it was just not the same level of comfort. There was a small private porch directly in front of my room, but I tended to go out and sit on the large terrace beyond my room to get closer to the sea. In April, there were only two tables and chairs on the second level terrace, but as it was not yet full tourist season, I do not know if more tables are added later or if these are meant exclusively for the two rooms located on that level.

I did not get to see inside the second room on the second level OR the rooms on the third (highest) level, however, I go the impression that they have a bit more space than the lower rooms (inquire about number of beds, kitchenete, etc.). I did see that all of the third-level rooms have a well-sized covered outdoor seating area directly in front of the rooms that they seemed to be enjoying (not as large as the terrace on the second level, but the view from up on the third level is even more incredible than down below - and it is already terrific down below. In any case, I was very happy with the view from my second floor room.

Another nice aspect of Gaby's is that there are NO buildings in front of it on the cliff to block the view or to produce a lot of light or noise at night. And to the right of the establishment is a lovely small Greek church, which was always peaceful and made for a lovely photograph.

Unfortunately, there is no breakfast offered or served, nor was I given permission to use their washing machine. While the female manager was very nice, and helped me out if there was a question or problem with my room, but this is not a service-oriented establishment. I also could not get wifi to work much of the time, so I had to use internet when I went out to restaurants or cafes. That said, with the magnificent view of the sea, I used that time to read or think or simply reflect instead of burying my head in my computer. They may have better internet service now, I do not know.

I was concerned when I read a Trip Advisor review by some young people in their 20s who said that they had a great time "partying" while they were there. i do indeed hope that this establishment does not get overrun by loud party-lovers as that would ruin much of the peace and quiet that I loved about the place. While I was there in April, everyone seemed well over the age of 30, so noise was no problem whatsoever. In case you are someone who seeks peace and quiet, you may want to ask the manager about what actions (if any) she takes to keep the peace.

The apartments are located on the path that follows up along the caldera from Fira. It is within easy walking distance from Fira, however, it would be wise to have a small flashlight with you, as sometimes the stones on the path are uneven and it is not always easy to watch your step when walking once the sun goes down. Gaby apartments are located on a quiet stretch of the path, but I was a female alone and I never felt unsafe.

I might not choose this general location along the caldera if I were with someone who had problems walking, because the path from Fira has a fair number of steps and uneven stones that could really slow them down or cause them to stumble. Others should find it no problem.

I had always wanted to see Santorini and the blue domed church with the view - well guess what, we were right next to it!!

We stayed at Gaby's Apartments for six nights and can thoroughly recommend it. Firostefani is a short walk from Firo and thus a lot quieter. Our apartment was on the ground floor and the twin bedded room was larger than the double and the beds were pushed together anyway. There was a small table right by the window and when this was open we had the most magnificent view over the Caldera. There was a small kitchen with fridge, kettle and a two burner stove but it was summer and so when we ate in we had salad etc. The bathroom was small and like others we had to get used to the hand held shower and no shower curtain which did mean that we always had a wet floor - but then for that view and the price we paid, we could certainly put up with that and we always had lots of hot water.

Outside the door of our apartment was a balcony with table and chairs. We used to have our breakfast out there and apart from the night when we visited Iao for the sunset we always had a drink out there to admire Mother Nature at her best. Katerina was so kind and helpful to us and we would definitely recommend Gaby's. A lot of other places nearby were very upmarket and extremely expensive, however for those who want an amazing view without the amazing price tag - then visit Gaby.

I would suggest that anyone going to Santorini take with them a pair of walking shoes as the paths are cobbled stoned with quite a lot of steps.

There are a load of restaurants around but we found Mama's House was very good indeed (no view) and also Mama Thira which is close by, has good food and a good view.

For a day out suggest Nissos Thirassia a boat trip which costs approximately 17E each without lunch as opposed to over 80E with lunch with other companies. These boats all go to the volcano, the hot springs and Thirassia (the island you can see opposite to Santorini). We bought our lunch at the furthest taverna on the beach at Thirassia and it was delicious. Suggest you take the donkey to the top, it certainly saves the walk!!

The buses to Iao run about every 30 minutes and if you are going for the sunset get there early to find your own "best" spot. The night we went people clapped as the sun went down - a thank you to Mother Nature.

A must is the prehistoric museum in Fira with artefacts dating back 3,300 years.

Gaby Apartments was absolutely perfect! the best hotel of our holidays in the Greek Islands! We stayed there 3 nights. The room was spacious and really clean. Above all, we have the perfect view of the sunset and Caldera, much better than in the center of Fira. Gaby apartments are in Firostefani, not in Fira, but it is only 10 minutes walking of distance for a beautiful street, so it is no a problem, and this area is more beautiful. The only problem is that they don't have neither a website nor an email, and you have to call them, or send them a fax. I felt insecure for this, but I had an apartment better even than in have imagine. Really good!! If you want to go to Santorini, it is very advisable to stay here. The owners (a family) were also very nice with us, let us to leave the lugagge there the last day and called for us a taxi. PERFECT!!

The situation of Gaby is perfect, not as busy as Fira and Oia, but close to a few restaurants, bars and market, also close to Fira, very convenient. The room is super clean, and combination of sea view, island whole view, volcano view and sunset view is unbeatable. You can enjoy sun shine and sunset in your own room or balcony with cozy clothes and some drink, not necessary to watch sunset at crowded Oia at all. Gaby made our trip flawless. The host is very kind and warm hearted, I will choose Gaby again if I come back to Santorini.

Pros: Spotlessly clean, comfortable bed, small but enough room for two people, good shower, private seating area outside room with large shared terrace, great views, convenient location (think Firostefani is best location on rim) Cons: we requested upper level room (better views) with twin beds, were given a lower level room with a double bed and no kitchenette (room was listed as having kitchenette) inconvenient since they don't serve breakfast. Insisted we pay cash but would not give cash discount, even though room was not as advertised. Oh well, it's high season. Staff were very nice otherwise, just don't expect them to do anything for you but the bare minimum.

We stayed at Gaby Apartments for 5 nights in late September / early October. We chose Gaby Apartments because of the good reviews on TripAdvisor plus we were keen to stay close to Fira.

We could not fault our stay. Gaby is a friendly and helpful person and greeted us warmly when we arrived. The apartment itself suited our needs perfectly and was very good value. The bed was very comfortable, great shower and well-equipped kitchenette. There is a mini-mart a short walk from the apartments where we purchased everything we needed to make breakfast, plus there's fantastic places to eat dinner in both Fira and Firostefani - all within walking distance.

The added bonus is the balcony with the caldera view. A fantastic place to watch the sunset.

We had a fantastic 5 days in Santorini, and would most certainly return to Gaby apartments.

Whilst you're there we can also recommend dinner at Mama Thira plus drinks at Kira Fira (jazz bar) and Francos.

We really enjoyed our stay at Gaby's. It is located overlooking the caldera with wonderful views of the ocean, the setting sun and a beautiful blue roof church. Everything was in excellent condition and we had several delightful evenings having our "sundowners" on the balcony with the gorgeous views of the water traffic, the cliffs and surrounding islands. Rooms are equipped with a fridge, electric kettle, coffee and tea and dishes and silverware. The caldera footpath is in front and you can walk on it to the old town area on one side or all the way to Oia (3 hours) on the other. I look forward to visiting Gaby's again sometime.

My husband and I just returned from a trip throughout the Greek Isles. We had the most amazing time and it was equally as fantastic in Santorini. The views from this hotel are AMAZING. Oia is supposed to have the best sunsets, but we found the ones off the terrace here to be equally as good. I enjoyed staying in Firostefani as opposed to Fira. It was a lot quieter and it was an easy and pleasant walk to Fira along the caldera. It is a little trailway that leads to Fira and you have that amazing view the entire time. My favorite parts of the night were the walk to dinner.

I would agree with the other post I just read... the shower is much like the others on the islands, small and hand held spout, but this one didn't have a curtain, so the entire floor would get wet. No big deal, just need an extra towel to lay down afterwards.

We loved renting an ATV and venturing around the island. Ancient Thira is well worth the trip and also the wines at Volcan Winery.

Oia for sunset is a site to see. Many people are there taking pics. We ate at the most amazing restaurant there called Nectar. Try the fried feta in phyllo dough... they are famous for it and rightfully so!!

Overall, great hotel and great location!

I absolutely adored this place.

The view is absolutely stunning. September unfortunately had some average weather for us with rain and cloud a couple of nights but we managed to squeeze in a sunset on the last night. Best views in the whole of Thira.

It is a bit of a walk from the main town (probably ten minutes but it is up-hill!) which can be a bit challenging when you've had a bit too much to drink!! But for the views it is totally worth it. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone that goes to Santorini.

The service was good - room was serviced every day which was perfect. The room was not massive but it was more than adequate. We had a balcony. There was TV but we never watched it. It is close enough if you want to get anything like drinks/food etc.

The only bad thing was that the shower didn't have a thing to hang up on - but a lot of Greek places are like this, we found it all over Greece. So you had to hold the shower yourself.

Best bit - view.
Worst bit - probably the shower but it wasn't even a problem!!

We called the hotel directly and you could tell you were calling a family's home. That family feeling carried through our stay. In fact, we found out that they stayed open for us at the end of the season.

The location is a bit out of the way from Stefani but if you don't mind the walk along the caldera edge its worth it for the view. Just be prepared for any weather changes.

The rooms were basic but very clean. The bed was nice and hard like every other bed we slept in Greece. The bathroom was very clean but lacked a shower curtain (like every other bathroom in Greece) and had a hand held shower... which I despise but got used to.
