The only place I would stay to complete the Tongariro crossing! Everything was perfect from start to finish. We even got upgraded to a bigger unit for free due to it not being a busy time! The tastiest breakfast muffin provided to our unit by Gillian in the morning was perfect pre hike fuel! John made our journey to the start of the walk very interesting and we looked forward to meeting him again at the end for the trip back! Amazing lunch was also provided by which we really enjoyed on the mountain side. Would recommend to everyone! Thanks again Gillian and John!

Everything was perfect! We wouldn't change a thing! Gillian and Dutchy are a great team. We chose the Freedom package which included two fabulous breakfasts and a scrumptious packed lunch on the day of the Tongariro crossing as well as transportationto and from the hike. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was hot and had great water pressure, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.

5 star stay, not because the room was perfect (really good though), but because the business is generous and service was excellent. We had to add a travel companion to all our North Island room bookings, almost all of which already had the extra bed to accommodate, and Adventure Lodge and Motels was the only one who didn't charge extra. Reception was also super friendly and daily housekeeping is really thorough. The unlimited WiFi was great- so necessary for when we were stuck indoors from cyclone Gabrielle weather.
The room itself was really spacious and clean- only minor issues. Our bathroom only had 2 hanging hooks, but these were previously broken and have not been fixed. The shampoo and body wash bottles attached to the shower stall were made for a really tall person. Noisy neighbours can be heard, usually as muffled voices, but depends how loud they get. The single bed was too soft- clearly different from the comfortable Queen bed.

We were driving long distance and decided to spend the night in this area. I booked via mobile app and understood checking in as being between 1500 - 1930hrs. A short distance away from arriving within that window I received a call confirming we were coming. Due to staff needing to drive a shuttle at time of arrival (just after 1900hrs) we felt rushed and a bit of an inconvenience. Later on re examining checking in detail it appears 24hrs prior you are supposed to book an arrival time between 1500 - 1930hrs so not an ideal start. The unit was totally adequate for our needs (basically a bed with ensuite bathroom). Very clean although slightly dated. When using bedside lamps we noticed the bulbs were mismatched with one warm white and the other cool white. We then noticed an empty smoke alarm bracket at an odd location for a chalet style ceiling. We took note of our escape options in case of fire and nervously tried to sleep. Emergency exits noted for this single sliding door entry unit with small opening double glazed windows was listing as 1) Sliding door 2) Ranch sliding door! (Listing the same entry / exit twice does not make it an optional choice). Probably would not choose to stay at again…bed OK, unit presentation OK…feeling safe to sleep was a not really. Then there was the additional cleaning fees for leaving unwashed dishes ($30!). We continued our drive at first light and found a cafe for morning coffee / tea a few km away. Suspect ideal for many visitors - sadly not for us.

Hi there I think you are mixing us up with some other accommodation? - our staff do not drive shuttles and do not close office due to driving shuttles????? We have a policy of leaving out keys for those arriving if we are not there - so it is not a problem ariving with us not being there. If the smoke alarm was missing you should have come to the office rang the door bell and we would have replaced it - the cleaners did not tell us they had removed it. you were not on a two storey building and had a whole large sliding door to escape to outside if a fire were to happen - there is a concrete wall inbetween you and the next unit so fire does not travel thru to your room. we are sorry about this experience but next time please go ask for help if you are worried about things like this that is what we are here for.?

We can't say enough good things about this accommodation and the staff (Lea, Lanna and Lauren) and owners, (John & Gillian). Everyone went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed, provided history and recommendations for hiking and provided excellent (and plentiful) breakfasts and a lunch for our Tongariro Alpine Crossing hiking day.
They provide drop off and pickup for the hikes as the National Park is quite large. They found out that my birthday was the next day and they had some chocolate cake waiting for us in our room when we returned from our hike!
Facilities include surface parking, a guest kitchen dining/area, laundry machine and a hot tub the guests can sign up for a much needed soak after serious hiking.
Family owned and they do feel like family. Highly recommend!

A pleasant place to stay that has a shuttle service for the Tongariro Crossing. Four of us stayed in the lodge which has shared bathrooms/showers. For shared accommodation it was satisfactory. One possible issue is that the walls are rather thin - we could hear the packing discussion in the next room. No issues sleeping etc, however no other room was noisy. Others in the group stayed in the motel portion - saw the rooms and they looked adequate, those that stayed there had no issues.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Dutchie was quite entertaining on the shuttle.
We stayed 2 nights so there was a prepacked breakfast and lunch for day 1 and then a full breakfast on day 2. Food was good and a number of dietary requirements for some in our group were met.
Overall would recommend.

We had the greatest time at the Adventure Lodge: the staff were extremely friendly and organised our transfers and breakfasts with a minimum of fuss. We were also given some local ideas for dinner and went to the Station as recommended by the staff and we were totally impressed. Our room was spacious enough and the facilities were clean and tidy. We paid separately for our breakfast but it was a great way to get some energy before our fantastic shuttle driver took us to the start of the Tongariro Crossing, talking non stop for the whole trip, full of useful tidbits and local history. We had several pick up times at the other end to choose from and were delighted when we (just) made the one we were aiming for and then had a quick, air conditioned trip back to the lodge. There again the staff were amazing, letting us have a shower to wash off the accumulated dust for a nominal fee. Overall it was a great relaxed and friendly stay at the Lodge, and getting the transfers was totally worthwhile to avoid arranging getting picked up and dropped off. Whole heartedly recommend the lodge as a place to stay if doing the crossing or skiing from National Park. Next time I will also aim to book a spa!!

We booked the package which included transport back and forth, a packed breakfast and packed lunch for the crossing and a full breakfast the next day.
The motel didn't have any conditioner and the owner went out of her way to provide me some!
Everyone was very friendly and helpful and supportive of everyone wanting to do the crossing.
There are also two restaurants within a 10 minute walk if needed.

Adventure Lodge and Motel is an excellent location in the National Park, walking distance to supermarket, bars and restaurants. The owners are fantastic people, incredibly helpful and genuine, going over and above to make guests feel home away from home. I stayed in a wonderful very spacious motel unit, with a very comfortable mattress, fully equipped kitchen, excellent room heating, a host of TV channels. They have a range of transportation vehicles, which you can book the night before your trip at very reasonable prices to almost any destination in the area and flexibility for pickup and return times. If you book directly at their website you get a fabulous breakfast, really substantial, comes with a small bottle of juice too; I recommend the vegetarian option. The property also has a large with large living room and dining area where you can catch up and socialise with other guests, as well as a shared fully equipped kitchen. I loved the tall wooden ceiling and room decorations. It was my third stay there and I am definitely a committed returning visitor. I strongly recommend this place! Thank you John and Jill for a wonderful time!

Spacious and comfortable studio unit. Fully equipped guest kitchen in separate building. Gillian and John are great hosts and Lana was extremly helpful also. You can book your transport to the Tongariro alpine crossing and back right at the place. John will give you all the advice you need for an awesome experience. They offer different styles of breakfast at the lodge and I can truly recommend the Bircher muesli. If you want to have a good place to stay in the National Park Village, the Adventure Lodge and Motels should be on your monitor!

Hi there, you could come down by train which is lovely but it only goes on certain days then catch train to Wellington - or you can come by bus from Auckland - The Naked Bus
or get to Taupo and we would come pick you up - there is a cost to this though
email me at Adventure Lodge -
with more details of where you would travel after you leave us and I will give you better details of which one to catch

hi there it all depends on the wind on the red crater - we usually go at 7.30 am so if the wind is low we go then but if it calms down later in day we go about an hour or so later so everyone can walk over the red crater to the other side otherwise they would just walk up and have to walk back down again.
I hope this answers your questions.
